The High Heat
I think once a pitcher becomes established, he should be paid for what he can do in his 20's and not bank (long-term anyway) on anything past aged 33. Free agency should probably start after 4 full seasons, with arbitration being eliminated altogether.

They are about to acquire John Farrell from Toronto. Rumored to be involved in the deal are the Jays' 1B Adam Lind and Sox SS Mike Aviles. Lind makes $3.8M more (plus a $2M buyout of options) than Aviles, so Boston taking on Lind's extra salary might be enough to satisfy Toronto.

bleedorange
Would the Giants have made the postseason without a drug-enhanced Melky Cabrera?
gogo
Possibly. They did very well without him, the last few months of the season. The argument could be made that they had a psychological chip on their shoulder after he was suspended, which pushed them to do better. But the fact that they're doing pretty well (so far, knock wood, etc.) in the post-season sort of makes that a moot point, doesn't it?
Shakespeare In The Alley
Would the Giants have made the postseason without a drug-enhanced Melky Cabrera?they basically did. if i remember correctly they were neck and neck (or at least very close) with the dodgers when melky was suspended, and they really put the division away without him. of course he was a big part of them competing for the first half of the season anyway, but they've done fine without him. i thought it was cool that they left him off the postseason roster. would have been a slap in the face to one of the guys that played the last two months to suddenly not be able to play in the world series. wouldnt shock me if hes back in san fran next year though. was not expecting last night at all. this giants team is on fire at the perfect time

Shakespeare In The Alley
I also have no interest in seeing him back as a Giant.it'll be interesting to follow. the way they've carried on without him makes it kinda weird to imagine him back, but he'd probably be relatively cheap now. im in dc and ive only seen one article implying the giants will try to bring him back. whats the word in san fran on this?
gogo
Well, Mota's back, but Mota had some deniability, and seems at least a little bit contrite. I think Melky's nonsense with the fake web site, etc., would make it a lot harder for Giants fans to accept him back, and I'm hoping that management will take that into account. But that's pure speculation, I certainly don't have any inside info.

The High Heat
Hard throwing Japanese pitchers have worked out so well in the past. He's 18 and not going through the Japanese professional leagues. Teams will be able to shape him into the MLB regiment from the beginning in the minors. Any prospect is a gamble. This kid is as valuable of a prospect as any American, Canadian or Latin pitcher. His heritage is irrelevant.
