mountain bed
Nice to see some love for Bob Weir. The first time I saw the band (12/5/81) he was the thing I remember most about the show. He was REALLY on, and made me realize he was a complete original. That said, he ain't my favorite. That would be Keef.

Sweet Papa Crimbo
Undoubtedly there's a disconnect between best, greatest and favorite. For me, it's all the same guy

thermocaster
Rich Robinson deserves a mention. He's done some amazing rhythm work in his career, and (I think unfairly) gets overlooked for a variety of crappy reasons.

worldrecordplayer
can you have a rhythm guitarist in a band w/ just one guitarist? I was going to ask the same. I don't get it. But if I did get it, I would add Johnny Ramone to the list.
jw harding
While I love the Dead, did Bob Weir really play rhythm guitar? He wasn't the lead guitarist, but don't think much of what he did had anything to do with rhythm, more providing textures or a web for Garcia to weave around. Guy is in his own special guitarist category.

uncool2pillow
I say yes. For example, I like Pete Townsend's prowess as a strummer. Never impressed by his solos. Hence, he's, IMO, a great rhythm guitarist, not so much as a lead. Did d. Boon ever play a solo in his life?

Oil Can Boyd
Mercer and MillionYes and yes. Though, like you, I couldn't figure out whether to put them in the two lead gutiarist thread or this one. I think this one is more appropriate. In most of their songs Million plays a more traditional rhythm guitar role.
