kidsmoke
I don't know about the rest of the country (midwest blizzards & all) but one reason I love January is that here in southern California it brings some of the most glorious weather of the year. Today is postcard-perfect brilliant blue skies with billowing stacks of cumulus clouds, and a surprisingly warm sun that has our normally indoor dogs wanting to lie out and bask in the sun with an old rib bone. Dog heaven. Also I'm a January birthday, so I'm predisposed to like the month, which also contains my husband's birthday and those of my two sons...only my daughter missed this month...she's February. It's a broke month for sure, with Christmas just in the rearview and then all those birthdays! But it's a happy broke, if there is such a thing. At least broke for happy reasons! What do you love about this month?
brownie
1) My birthday is also in January. 2) The days are getting longer now!
Albert Tatlock
It means it's less than 4 weeks to the Six Nations.
Fritz
Down here in the southern hemipshere January means a loooong hot summer, holidays, reading, Tamworth country music festival in late Jan, and lots of snorkelling.
anthony
I am a SoCal January Birthday as well.
The Inside of Outside
Ditto to the January birthday (same day as Kidsmoke, no less). There is something special about your own birthday month. Hurray for longer days (we've gained 14 minutes of daylight since Dec. 21st already here in Maine). Great time of the year for skiing, pond hockey, snowshoeing, and fires in the fireplace. I don't watch a lot of NFL regular season, but I do like the playoffs in January.
jff
I like January because it's not Christmas season yet.

kidsmoke
Ditto to the January birthday (same day as Kidsmoke, no less). There is something special about your own birthday month. I knew I liked you! It's a great birthdate, isn't it? Produces wonderful people. I like January because it's not Christmas season yet. Exactly! Or even Halloween. Ice fishing......when the weather is normal. It just may be that last year and this year are total busts. My experience of ice fishing is almost completely limited to cartoons about it. Do you build the little icehouses over the cut hole? Sounds to me as if it would be a chilly endeavor, but I know Lotti would say that just means you haven't had enough of the schnapps. There is (are?) schnapps involved, yes? For my job it's goal setting time and budget crap and no fun. To quote someone we know and love, I am and always have been "short on long term goals" so for me the answer is NOTHING. .. NOTHING. . .. NOTHING. . . .NOTHING. . .. NOTHING. .. nothing at all! Well at least you have your friend's birthday to be happy about! PS - Diane, I'd understand if you were tempted to use the fish from NoJ's ice fishing thusly-> Frozen fish are especially effective. NoJ
Nah, I dont drink on the ice. Gotta keep my wits about me, those fish are wily sorts......and any mistreatment of fish, alive or dead, will be considered abuse of the highest order. Offenders will be punished appropriately. Queen Amaranthine
Happy birthday to all the January birthday boys and girls! Count me in for a January birthday...Aquarius characteristics to the bone. I have the first week of January off from work, so that's a plus. My kids love snow, although this week we had a thaw and it's almost all melted. Last weekend we went sledding on small hills, which was loads of fun. The snow was too powdery for snowmen or snow dinosaurs (very cute), but maybe next time will bring the right kind of snow. The local parks and rec and county conservation offer free cross country skiing and snoeshoeing sessions once a month, which this winter I want to do with the kids. Last year there was no snow on any of those dates, and so far this winter the dates were times we couldn't make it. The bad: colds and flu tend to be rampant this time of year. Knock on wood, but my family has been healthy so far this month. November and early December we had our sick spells. Everyone stay healthy where you are--rumor is, it's a horrible flu season. Kim Bodnia
one reason I love January is that here in southern California it brings some of the most glorious weather of the year. Today is postcard-perfect brilliant blue skies with billowing stacks of cumulus clouds, and a surprisingly warm sun If there's something I like about California (Los Angeles area at least) is the weather, never too extreme, but then again I have lived in countries of extreme weather, from very harsh and cold winters to tropical places where the sun never seems to rest. On the occasions that I visited California, in June for example, I could walk around the beach and enjoy the warm weather, not too hazy as, say, Houston, Atlanta or even New York. But Winter is my favourite time of the year, which is why I like January, and February. Come April, May I'm lamenting the end of cold days (not to mention the slush that accumulates in the ground as temperatures rise and the snow can't persist anymore, I'm a winter person). anthony
Happy birthday to all the January birthday boys and girls! Count me in for a January birthday...Aquarius characteristics to the bone. Celebrated my birthday yesterday (Capicorn version of Jan. birthday). Wife took me Meltdown Comics and Amoeba Music in Hollywood for some books and vinyl. Then a trip down Santa Monica Blvd (minor detour around the Golden Globes at the Beverly Hilton) for dinner at 3rd St Promenade. A cold and sunny b-day for sure, but quite beautiful. For those interested, the vinyl I picked up: * Townes Van Zandt - Flyin Shoes (180 g)* Mississippi John Hurt - Blessed be the Name; The Complete 1928 Okeh Recordings* Father John Misty - Fear Fun The books: * Walking Dead #106* Mara #1* Before Watchmen: Ozymandias #4of6

Dog heaven. What do you love about this month? I'm with you on the weather, because I live in south Florida. Sometimes it gets downright cold here in Dec-Feb, but so far this is a beautiful January. It's 61 in Tampa right now, and it's almost 10 pm. Pretty sweet. It's like the gorgeous days we used to get in the spring and fall in New England when I was growing up, highs in the 70s or low 80s and lows in the 60s.
kidsmoke
I spoke too soon on the weather! We've had freezing temps for many nights now...I heard some visitor from DC on the news the other night, complaining that he'd visited southern CA hoping for some nice, warm weather but it was actually colder than in DC!
