Magnetized
He announced it today and the episode will be airing tonight. He's had a great run and has left as much of a legacy as Johnny Carson, but it's probably time.
uncool2pillow
It was time about 15, if not 20 years ago. He shaped my sense of humor more than anyone else, but he's really stopped trying. Hopefully the announcement will rejuvenate him. Maybe Leno will take over the Late Show.
Tweedling
Kimmel and Fallon are ushering in a different approach to late night. Much more fun than what Letterman or Leno have been doing.Any rumors who will replace. It can't be the guy that comes on after Letterman, can it? :/
Magnetized
I don't really think this would happen, but there was a 2-episode run on Louie (C.K.) about Letterman retiring and Louie being groomed to take over. In that story arc the network was positioning him as the more affordable alternative to Jerry Seinfeld, who was considered the obvious heir apparent. I think one of the best interviewers out there is Marc Maron, but he's probably too volatile and would alienate as many people as he would fascinate.
jff
Hopefully whoever they get to replace Letterman will be better than Seth Myers. His show is a disaster on every possible level.
Sir Stewart
I think one of the best interviewers out there is Marc Maron, but he's probably too volatile and would alienate as many people as he would fascinate. Maron tweeted that he's willing to entertain an offer, as long as he can do the show from his garage. All tongue-in-cheek, of course, for those who aren't familiar with him. Sir Stewart
In the mid-to-late 80s, my family taped Letterman almost every single night and watched it the next day, and some interviews and bits (especially the anniversary specials) were watched by my brother and me over and over again, to the point of memory. Late Night with David Letterman is easily the biggest influence on my sense of humor. I haven't been that big a fan in years (right off the bat the move to CBS and the Ed Sullivan Theatre struck me as too big, in-your-face and showbizzy for Dave's weirdo comic tendencies), but I'll never have a more favorite comedian. It can't be the guy that comes on after Letterman, can it? :/not a ferguson fan? i dont see him taking the gig but i think hes fantastic i keep seeing stewart/colbert as the leading guesses to take over, but i dont think itll happen. theyve both got great gigs and to take over for dave theyd have to pretty much leave their political characters behind to just be a regular comedian. i think either one would be great, i just dont see them wanting to do it
Atticus
Ferguson has been clear that he doesn't want Letterman's gig
GtrPlyr
I'm kinda glad Letterman is finally retiring. He lost me as a fan years ago, though I still watch on the rare occasion if he has a good musical guest. For me though, he's been phoning it in for years. Ferguson has been clear that he doesn't want Letterman's gig That's probably a good thing as it would likely lead to him totally revamping his show to please the network. Moss
I don't really think this would happen, but there was a 2-episode run on Louie (C.K.) about Letterman retiring and Louie being groomed to take over. In that story arc the network was positioning him as the more affordable alternative to Jerry Seinfeld, who was considered the obvious heir apparent. It's funny, I just watched those episodes last weekend so when I heard the news I immediately thought maybe there was some reality to it. I used to watch Letterman every single night in College. Then I got old and had a bedtime so only catch it hear and there. He is still my favorite of the bunch. The field is so crowded with talk shows now it does not seem like a big deal who takes over the spot.
Analogman
I use to watch the show back then also. In those days I always had a tape in the VCR - just so I could tape music stuff mainly. I think I have Pear Jam night on tape. Plus - other things - such as the night Salman Rushdie popped up. Does anyone recall when Letterman was on in the mornings? I seem to recall watching it in the summer of 1980.

Late Night with David Letterman is easily the biggest influence on my sense of humor. Ditto, on everything. I really can't remember a time when I didn't view him as the gold standard, perhaps because he came on the scene during my formative years. His free-for-all style of comedy at the outset definitely helped shape my sense of comedy.

PopTodd
...the night Salman Rushdie popped up.When he delivered the Top Ten list in the middle of the whole Satanic Verses thing? I remember laughing my ass off at that little surprise."If you need me, I'm staying at the Waldorf." Totally lost it.

Tweedling
Not a fan of ferguson. I find him to bit a bit too corny and just not funny in my book. To each his own... Sent from my SPH-L720T using Tapatalk
calvino
I don't how locked in Conan O'Brien's contract is, but I guess it would be fitting for him to replace Letterman, again. I heard his ratings are horrible on TBS - so TBS may want to drop him if they have a chance.
bleedorange
I've always liked Letterman, but it's been years since I've actually watched him. That's more a product of having little to no interest in late night television than any feelings on the quality of the various hosts. What are the numbers for late night TV? It seems that media coverage of the various shows far outweighs their value, but I'm not really sure.
