So, which Europe '72 show should I buy next? I don't actually have that many, but could never afford to buy the entire trunk. I can only get one here, one there. I already owned versions of 4/14, 5/25 & 5/26, and I have the official E72 releases of 4/16 and 5/11. Thinking of one getting one of the following:

5/23 (Strand #1)

4/26 (Frankfurt)

5/3 (Olympia #1)

4/8 (Wembley #2)

4/11 (Newcastle)

Decisions, decisions...

I'd go with 5/23 if I can pick only one. Then 4/8. 4/26 has a WILD Other One that falls into a gorgeous Comes a Time.

It's my favorite tour (I'm not alone I know), but I'm no expert on each individual show, but if 4/26 is the Hundred Year Hall show, I can give that a huge thumb's up.  I ended up buying the full show when it became available.

Yep, it is the Hundred Year Hall show.

Speaking of '72 Dead, if any of you kind Dave's Pick's subscribers would be willing to help a brother out, I discovered to my dismay tonight that my Vol. 11 from 11/17/72 is totally MIA...I don't have the discs, I don't have copies of the files on my iMac or external hard drive... I even checked my Amazon account to see whether I had stupidly sold it without remembering to burn a copy for myself, but nope. It's like it never existed....Really weird. It's in the Twilight Zone.

I listened to the Dave's #15 bonus disc a couple of weeks ago, but finally dug into the meat of the 3/26/72 show tonight (disc 2). I remember Lemuiex talking about how this was "transitional" Dead, that you could hear elements of Europe and Fall '71 in here. To be honest I thought it sounded a LOT like Europe until I got to The Other One. The odd thing about this one for me was I heard Pig on organ on a lot of the weirder parts of the jam, kind of unusual. The other thing was there were many passages where I not only thought of Fall '71, but even Spring '71 - especially what Bobby is doing, and where Keith & Pig are laying out a bit. It's sort of a unique version, not great, but very interesting.

Wish I had gotten this release, if for no other reason than starting in '73, the Academy of Music was our home away from home, growing up in Nassau County.  Didn't catch any of the '72 Dead shows there, but so many amazing nights were spent in that theater.

Been spending some time over the last couple of days with my favorite May '77 show, Buffalo on May 9.  Heck, one of my favorite shows from any era.  Have listened to it innumerable times over the years.  If anyone hasn't, I suggest you do.  Especially the matrix that is in circulation.  I'd be happy to set up a Dropbox link if anyone wants it.

Cooooool.

Been working my way all the way through 5/11/72 in the car, and there really is some good stuff on there. I am not typically big on 40-minute Dark Stars, but this one really has something for everyone. Nice long jam session in the middle that actually goes to some interesting places.

I gotta ask: did you ever see Renaissance at the Academy? Hey, feel free to tell us about any of the shows there!

Cool find a friend made today and posted on the fb. A truly unique C.C. Rider (from Indy 12.5.81) if you've never heard it:

http://relisten.net/grateful-dead/1981/12/5/cc-rider

Beeler? We were talking about that CC Rider earlier today. That was my 1st show. Although as I told you tonight I wasn't really aware of how damn good that CC was at the time.

But that whole show is worth a listen - the band seemed re-energized from the Europe Tour in the Fall, and lots of stuff from then to the end of '81 seems to have a nice spark.

Found this on Mickey, when he was in the Army...in Spain. In fact, he maybe lived in my house before me, as I lived in a borough populated by American soldiers and my dad rented the house to one of them.

Been flipping through Billy's book -- one interesting bit was that Jerry paid Billy the same wage as he did Kidd (I think that was the roadie who helped during the session or it could have been Ramrod) for the 'Garcia' record.

He was happy that he did receive some songwriting credits -- probably still collects a bit for the Wheel.

Overall the book seems like the typical  auto-bio rock book --- which means not much depth.

Saw Billy on Conan last night, and seen/heard some other interviews with him lately. Fun guy, tells stories most of us have heard a few times, not much depth. Some of these rock stars suffer from arrested development. You would think being a rebellious adolescent would get old after a while, but I guess there are drugs for that.

Thanks!

Might catch John K's Golden Gate Wingmen this weekend (playing 3 Denver, 1 Boulder) just because. Saw them NYE and was not impressed. Hoping a few months has added some comfort to the outfit.

Reminder that the new Weir documentary is available now on Netflix. My wife has been trying to organize a Bobby short-shorts viewing party for this weekend....

Watched it tonight.  Pretty good.  I could've watched hours of Weir just dicking around his studio talking about stuff.  I'd also love to see some more of his solo show performances.  That Jack Straw with Bruce was great.  I was also struck by Trixie's sadness.  Could really relate to her both as a Deadhead and as a human being whose lost people ect.  My only issue is that the movie doesn't cover the last 20 years.  I would've love to have heard about Ratdog, the Other Ones, The Dead, Further, his recent issues.  Also, how about his solo stuff.  Would've also loved to have Weir give a demonstration about how he plays guitar vs traditional playing.

Fun stuff though.  Man I miss Garcia and am really glad Bob is out there and Phil and Mickey and Billy.  If you don't get it, you don't...but if you do, you know what I'm saying....Grateful Dead!

The Weir doc was a fun and interesting portrait of a guy who has lived an incredibly charmed life. For a guy who has been thrown into a maelstrom since age 16, it's amazing how relatively grounded and mature he is, compared to his peers - like Billy. Bob Weir may be the quintessential 60's California male: attractive rock star hippie jock who embraced the ideals of the era.

Although the doc didn't explain his guitar playing too in depth, I think it was accurate as describing him as the most unique guitar player. There are a lot of lesser Garcia imitators, but even Garcia played lead guitar in a conventional way, albeit better than anyone else. To borrow a phrase, Weir was not the best guitar player, but he was the only one who played guitar the way he did.

Also enjoyed Weir discussing the telepathic way of playing on acid: seeing through other people's eyes, hearing through their ears.

And his comments on Neal Cassady and multi-dimensionality were fascinating. Their relationship was interesting, and after hearing so much about Cassady over the years, it did shed some new light on a subject who was not entirely of this world.

I've said it before: imagine how stupid anyone would look standing and playing next to Garcia every night. Put yourself in Bobby's shoes next to that level of talent and charisma, in the contexts they found themselves in. I would not have ever made it on stage.

I didn't know Bob did an Elvis (teenage girl who became his wife).  I wonder if that is the same house he has always lived in. There are photos of his place in the Playing In The Band book that look to be the same as what we see in the documentary.

Speaking of houses - I was around the house at 710 back in the early 1980s. If I recall correctly - there was a gate in front of the steps back in those days. Whoever owned it at the time did not want people hanging around on the steps.

This! You can't explain it to people. Although for some stupid reason I always try, I guess it's some sort of strange intellectual exercise. Or just a waste of time.  :stunned

I'm pretty positive it IS the same house.
