I really hope Donald Trump takes the GOP nomination.

I do not.  With all of the voter suppression measures out there, the fact he has some sort of weird populist support, and a majority of voters no longer vote for a person, just the letter behind their name, he could actually win.  I would not want a world where a handful of undecided voters could put him in office.  As much as I disagree with the politics and the nature of the rest of the GOP field, I would rather have anyone of them instead of Trump (Carson notwithstanding).

We are at a turning point in our history.  The next president will probably appoint 3 supreme court justices.  This will have a huge effect on our daily lives.  It is a big deal that we get someone as president who will nominate competent fair minded jurists.  I do not think Trump has the the ability to do so.

If Trump gets the nomination, he'll probably beat Clinton as crazy as that sounds.  If any Republican becomes president, we're bombing Iran.  If Trump does, we'll probably use tactical nukes.  Dude's a total fascist.

Latest Trump quote:

"The other thing with the terrorists is you have to take out their families, when you get these terrorists, you have to take out their families. They care about their lives, don't kid yourself. When they say they don't care about their lives, you have to take out their families."

I find it almost incomprehensible that Donald Trump could sustain this level of popularity when it comes right down to nominating a candidate. I never thought he would last this long, though, so I obviously underestimated the meanness and fear of a large segment of our population. It reminds me of when the OJ Simpson verdict came down: I was honestly shocked at how differently blacks and whites reacted to the not guilty verdict, even in my own office. It opened my eyes to just how deep the racial divide is in this country. I think what may be happening now is that we don't fully realize how deep the divide is between moderate to liberal people and the far right fringe elements. I don't know what to attribute it to, either: the growing influence of Fox News and their ilk, Islamic terrorism, the NRA, the widening economic gap, junk/reality TV, and I'm sure lots of things I'm not even thinking of. I just know that I am genuinely shocked and still cannot and do not believe there is enough small-mindedness in this country to permit a yahoo like this to prevail.

I often wonder what "moderate" Republicans or those Republicans who see Trump as an embarrassment would do if the 2016 Election came down to Clinton v Trump?

I guess there is only these options

1. Vote for Trump

2. Vote for Clinton

3. Vote for a third party candidate

4. Not vote at all

It would be interesting to see where Republicans stand and how they vote.

Interesting, especially when compared to the other candidates.  It appears regardless 7 to 11 % of republicans would vote for Clinton or Sanders over any of the GOP candidates.  And surprisingly the number of Republicans not voting for Trump is about the same as not voting for any GOP candidate.

Thanks for that.

Trump has no chance. It's going to come down to Ted Cruz and Marco Rubio, with Jeb still holding on to an outside shot (thanks solely to money). Cruz can thank his lucky stars for Trump and Carson lasting this long, because now he seems less extreme next to those two. He'll probably win in Iowa. Rubio and/or Bush will do well in New Hampshire, and then the real race starts as everyone else fades away.

The election is still 11 months away. I doubt he'll still be in contention by then.

I think that is the consensus, however, since he got in the race everyone has been waiting for him to fail.  He has routinely done things and said things that would sink other candidates.  But if anything he has seen an increase in his support.  I don't think people can just idly sit by and wait for him to implode.  The GOP has to seriously look at Trump and what his candidacy and rhetoric says about the party.

Rubio is spending a lot on TV ads in NH, but apparently his ground operations are really, really thin. we'll see what happens.

If anyone has no chance it is probably (besides Bush) Ted Cruz; he's just as much a loose cannon as Trump.   Even Christie has a chance of gaining some momentum from establishment types, but ultimately it is going to be Rubio against Clinton. Now that we are at the 11 month mark it's going to get serious for both parties.  And with the world in turmoil, Bernie Sanders is also going to start to fade because his main appeal is his positions on domestic issues.  This entire campaign is ridiculously long and when push comes to shove, everyone is going to shove closer to the center leaving little room for Cruz Trump, Paul, and Sanders.  Look for a nail biter between Clinton and Rubio.

Trump's a pace car. Nothing else.

Get him to say all the outrageous things just to see what sticks. A litmus test.

And this is not troubling?  All of his outrageous statements have stuck.  27% of the Republicans support him for president.  That is not a small number.  Also his statements have really have not met with a large push back from the other candidates.  So the take away for whomever become the nominee is that hateful, racist, bigoted rhetoric and policies are ok and will actually bolster your support.

Trump is some getting push back from the other candidates, esp from Bush and Kasich  - of course not many republicans care what they have to say, but at least they are calling him out.

It actually is a small number:

Troubling for who, me?

No. Do you know what troubles me? Making enough to support my family, buying a house next Spring in a good school district, raising my two boys. If our electorate is crazy enough to elect Trump as president, what are my options? Move to another country? I'm not single. It's not going to happen.

Also, Trump will never be president of this country.

Am I troubled that there's a sizable contingent who actually like Trump? No.

What I am troubled by is that by your definition he is a pace car or a litmus test.  And in my mind that means he is the stick by which now measure what is acceptable discourse for a candidate of a major political party.  His rhetoric is not being actively and routinely criticized and denounced, by the media and especially members of his own party.  What he is saying is not ok.  What he is doing is not ok.

Will he be nominated? probably not.  Will he be president? very unlikely.  But his rhetoric will have a lasting effect on the political process, by showing that you can lie about and disparage citizens and cultures of our country with no repercussions.  So I am worried about a Trump presidency, no.  I am worried about 2020, 2024 and beyond.

I am looking big picture.  I want to live in a country where people are treated fairly and with respect.  Trump is the antithesis of that and he is showing that you can get away with it.  You shouldn't be able to get away with saying things he says.

How do you think people get rich, by being earnest, honest, and working hard?

The Donald's repercussions will be that his legacy will be: He's a buffoon.

I'd like to live in your nirvana too, but I live in the USA, and it's the greatest country in the world. But, nobody gets treated fairly. That's not possible.
