AGIB 20 Year Anniversary

Recommended Posts

I don't know anything more than the next Wilco nerd, but when Jeff talks on his Substack about how their archivist (Cheryl Pawelski who curated the YHF reissue) has been hanging around the Loft with him, you know they're getting ready to shake loose some recording you've never heard. AGIB 20 Year is being prepped.

That's my prediction at least.

The timing makes sense for a fall release. Hopefully this means we finally get the Wilco Book on vinyl.

The Wilco Book CD is a compilation of the (12?) Fundamentals session recordings, right? Would love to hear more of those!

Yeah, I remember Jeff saying after all of the scrutiny they put into perfecting YHF he wanted to practice making "records" in real time. I think they did it multiple times. Like anything, I'm sure there's plenty of stuff no one ever needed to hear, but there are probably some gems. Maybe even the hammer dulcimer licks that made it into real songs!

From a 2004 Spin interview:

Quote

Several of the songs on A Ghost Is Bornare the result of a process the band calls “fundamentals”: Tweedy played an acoustic guitar and sang random lyrics while the others listened in another room; the rest of the band then performed along with Tweedy while he remained in isolation (they could hear him, but he couldn’t hear them). These half-hour sessions were burned onto CDs; Tweedy would later listen to the discs at home and try to turn fragments into individual songs.

I really find it works best on paper.

@radiatortunes sent this to me before my alarm went this morning, so after I turned it off this tweet was the first thing I saw. I admit in my still mostly asleep state of mind my initial thought was "fuck, that won't fit on my record shelf".

But if they're teasing us, maybe an actual announcement is imminent?!

I know what you're trying to say BUT... view the actual book as the liner notes and the CD as a release called "The Wilco Book"!

I was starting to think I'd joined the legions of embarrassingly inept predictors of the future when Jeff chimed in on his Substack about the original form of "Panthers" being brought to mind from recently digging through the archives. We might still see a deluxe edition!

Recently announced anniversary sets already have a release date around half November, so with no leaks AND the physical release date of HSCS set back to Nov 29, my hope is slightly fading away...

Mine too. Looking unlikely this year.

Nice spoiler on that iMusic page by the way: the "Rocktober 2024 Electric Blue Vinyl edition" of Summerteeth, to be released on Oct 4th.

Dang I hope you're wrong, I'm really looking forward to this one for this year.  My feelings were that it would be released just in time for the "boosted" retail sales leading up to the holiday period (Thanksgiving onwards).  Nov 29th being the day after Thanksgiving.  But with each passing week and no sign of a pre-order I too am beginning to doubt my hopeful guesses...

I’d like to add that there hasn’t been an official announcement yet either for U2’s 20th anniversary for How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb which is supposed to be due on November 22nd. Rumor is that it’ll be announced on the 1st of next month. [Edited to add recent info: announcement has been pushed up a few days to tomorrow the 26th.]

Some other releases that have just been announced by artists that I follow:

The Cure finally announced their long awaited album last week for November 1st.
St. Vincent’s Spanish translation of All Born Screaming was announced last week for November 15th.

The National just announced today that they will be releasing a live set recorded in Rome in early June on December 13th.

I can see the concerns, but I wouldn’t worry. I can’t see them skipping AGIB 20th anniversary deluxe edition. One day we’ll wake up to the preorder email.
