  1. I know. They still have to finish the Canadian tour they started last summer. Asia (!) is playing at the Commodore on Aug 20, but Deer Lake Park in Burnaby is a nice spot for a summer concert. I saw the Arcade Fire there last month and it's a great GA venue. Very pretty spot and just 15 min from my house.
  2. Wow, I'll give that serious consideration. We'd love to see you again and meet little Ruby. Miles must be a big boy now!
  3. The results are in! I'm disappointed that the Bay of Fundy and Haida Gwaii didn't make the cut, but I won't quibble. This reminds me of how much I want to visit Old Quebec City someday.
  4. Dr. Judy Very cool to see that they're heading back to Winnipeg again this summer too. Crossing my fingers for a Vancouver date. I can't believe that it has been nearly three years... but who's counting?
  5. I always appreciate your "refuse to be a victim" philosophy, Kevin. I think it's time to go outside and look at those mountains while I still can.
  6. I know. Just a bit of my frustration showing there. In this case, I'm really conflicted because the Squamish Nation is doing this (on their land) and they could really use the money.
  7. You're right, I can shut down, tune out, hit the mute button, etc., but it's like swatting flies sometimes... and I still can't see the fucking mountains!
  8. True, but you can't ignore scale. I don't see public art filling nearly every crevice of available space. A really hot topic in Vancouver right now is the plan to erect large billboards that will block some pretty spectacular views. To put this in context, we have height restrictions for office towers to prevent the city skyline from dominating the mountains. (It's kind of ironic that the First Peoples are doing this to us now. Karma? Oof!) When someone made a joke about Neil Young and trading beaver pelts in the other thread, I was going to say that we just wait for the govt. to pay
  9. He's nuts. It's part of his charm.
  10. She's not even American! Seriously though, No Logo is a very interesting read and these threads have inspired me to dust it off again. A fan msg board is probably not the best place to seek an open-minded discussion about this kind of thing. Some of you protest too much, methinks. It's interesting to hear why Wilco and so many other musicians with a lot of artistic integrity have chosen to go this route. If you make an album as brilliant as SBS, it's understandable that you want it to be heard. People like Neil Young are able to float in a bubble of virtue because they enjoy the dual
  11. I think M Chris made that point in the original thread, too. Wise words.
  12. BTW, jnickerson, what a beautiful baby! (I assume you're the proud papa.) One of the things I'm enjoying about my 8 month old daughter is her indifference toward brands. I know it won't be long before I have to deal with the "nag factor" and ultimately her own youth culture will be co-opted by "cool hunters" (as mine was). Until then... bliss.
  13. I do the same thing. I read The Diary of a Young Girl for the first time on a flight to Amsterdam. When I visited the Anne Frank Huis a few days later, the little details were still so fresh in my mind (e.g., view of the clock tower from the attic window) it really hit me hard.
  14. I can think of something we deserve if this thread reaches 50 pages, and it isn't ice cream. Where is redjim when you need him?
  15. Very cool. Thanks, Kyle! Twin Cinema isn't as caffeinated as the first two albums, but it always puts a smile on my face.
  16. Hope you had a wonderful day, my friend.
  17. If you look in the archives, you'll probably come across a thread or two.
  18. You're right. I just looked it up and about 35% of the cost is taxes.
  19. I've seen it as high as $1.27 (for regular) here. I think it's pretty safe to say that we're paying the highest prices in North America.
  20. Thanks for clarifying, Paul. I thought maybe that earlier post was referring to a certain group of loveable American rock tourists who definitely put that tired stereotype to rest. The next time I travel to Europe, I'm going to sew an American flag on my backpack.
  21. I wasn't there, but I'm pretty sure this is an ongoing joke about the "poverty jet set" (to use another Coupland neologism). It was probably intended as a backhanded shout-out rather than an insult. I don't think Jeff is that mean. Sounds like it was an incredible show. I'm trying not to think about how long it will be before I get to hear the new songs live. Lucky people!
  22. I'm so glad I had the chance to see Riviera at the Vic (opening for that Tweedy guy) a couple of years ago. Believe it or not, that show was the major inspiration for my first visit to Chicago. Looking forward to whatever lies ahead for you guys. Really enjoy your articles on GloNo and PolJunk, Derek. I guess now you'll have more time to write?
