  1. Chicago is a wonderful city and if it wasn't for Wilco (and VC), I probably would never have discovered so much great music and so many amazing people. The first children's album I bought for my baby daughter was the Wee Hairy Beasties (Kelly Hogan, Jon Langford, Sally Timms, Devil in a Woodpile) on Bloodshot. I'm working hard to make our home a Raffi free zone!
  2. I saw Tortoise perform at the Jazz Festival in Vancouver the other night and they were smokin' hot! I hardly ever get a chance to see live music anymore, but when I do, it's usually a band from Chicago.
  3. This is an old article, but I thought the psyc profile of a "family annihilator" was quite interesting. Fathers who kill their children
  4. From what I've heard on the news so far, these murders seem too methodical to be 'roid rage, but do fit the profile of a family annihilator (especially if there was a history of domestic violence). Those text msgs are chilling. Very sad.
  5. Don't know if this is true, but I read somewhere that there was a history of domestic violence.
  6. I remember meeting pok at Irving Plaza a couple of years ago. He is missed around here.
  7. Insulin was discovered by Canadians at the University of Toronto. ...

Nice detective work. I haven't been to a Wilco show in Vancouver that was GA since they played two nights at the Commodore Ballroom in 2002. I remember that I showed up about an hour before the show and was able to stand front row, center. That would probably be pushing your luck this time, but I find that people in Vancouver rarely show up super early (especially on a weekday) ... On the other hand, Wilco fans traveling from places like Seattle to see the show may not be as laid back as we are.
  9. Don't get me wrong, white privilege exists north of the border too. In other news, Canada has a no-fly list now.
  10. I've never understood the meaning of "white privilege" quite so clearly as I do now.
  11. Canadians love American tourists - especially when our dollar is strong. The only thing to worry about in the Canadian Rockies is rutting elk... and maybe the odd bear or two. Please don't mistake our distaste for the policies of the Bush administration for anti-Americanism. Think of us as standing in solidarity with the majority of the American people. Just like you, we value our sovereignty, the environment, fair trade, human rights, etc. The Council of Canadians was founded by people like Margaret Atwood and Farley Mowat, so I'm pretty sure you could take them if things got ugly.
  12. Maude Barlow is a firecracker and we need more people like her. I joined the Council of Canadians after reading her book. Well, I tried to read it, but it broke my heart and I had to stop. No one in the Canadian media was paying attention to the SPP (probably because there has been so much secrecy around it) before Maude started making noise. Lou Dobbs appears to be doing the same thing in the US. It's a start.
  13. Sure enough! I never thought I'd say this, but God bless Lou Dobbs for drawing attention to this very important issue. The Security & Prosperity Partnership (how Orwellian is that?) sends a chill down my spine. This is how my country will die.

We're so obedient. I'm sure the band wondered why we were such a lame audience... until the encore, when a critical mass overpowered the ushers and just stormed down front anyway. I remember the surprised look on Jeff's face when they came back out and he saw people standing right in front of the stage, like, "Wow, what took you guys so long?"
  15. My husband and I spent some time in Banff on our honeymoon. September is a wonderful time to visit the Rockies, but it is also mating season for the elk. We had to listen to a horny bull bugling outside our cabin all night when we were staying at the Jasper Park Lodge. I can still picture him standing under the street lamp, "Heyyyy ladies!" In the blue Canadian Rockies Spring is silent through the trees And the golden poppies are blooming Round the banks of Lake Louise

I'm thrilled with the venue change! The Orpheum is for the VSO, not a rock band. What I remember most about the 2004 show was being forced to sit down all night. Malkin Bowl should be a pleasant walk from almost any downtown hotel on a summer evening, especially if you stay in the west end or coal harbour. If you really don't want to walk more than a couple of blocks, public transit is another option. Check out the Translink website to find bus schedules, etc. (And Halcyon, you can catch the #19 from Metrotown if you're taking the Skytrain.)

Wilco under the stars at Stanley Park. Doesn't get much better than that!

Am I seeing things or did the Vancouver date just disappear from WilcoWorld? Crap! This can't be happening to us again?

Malkin Bowl is in Stanley Park. I really hope your bold prediction is right, Quinn. I don't think they're planning a second night because it takes a long time to travel from Edmonton to Vancouver.
