  1. I'm kind of a sucker for that line in either way "Maybe you still love me, maybe you don't. Either you will or you won't" Gets me every time.
  2. Wow! Thats a fine piece of writing there Louie, your encyclopedic knowledge of music never fails to amaze me. I will have to check out some of the discs you mentioned in your piece. I'm a pretty big Miles Davis fan mostly Bitches Brew era stuff but I feel I need to branch out just a bit. Thanks for giving me some ideas. Jazz can indeed seem imposing what with all the different styles and era's but you give a really concise overview as to what the jazz neophyte (like me) might find interesting. Good stuff.
  3. for me #3 is false.....I only went to a hundred or so Dead shows. I really did have the flesh eating bacteria thing....happened this past September. 11 days in the hospital and 2 surgeries nasty nasty stuff
  4. 1. I had a case of Necrotizing Fasciitis ( flesh eating bacteria) 2. I was knocked in the back of the legs repeatedly by Trey Anastasio (of Phish) and his guitar case while standing in the security line at the Nashville airport 3. I have attended over 200 Grateful Dead shows
  5. check out any surplus stores you may have around. You can find some cool bags there. I used to have a gas mask bag I carried around (kept it after I got out of the Army), also had a map case from Germany that made a pretty good if smallish mini back pack
  6. Too funny.....all my friends are like that to an extent. They can't imagine why I have so much live Dead. They are like why do you need more than one version of Darkstar? Then you have to get into the subtilties of say a 69 version of DS vs. a 72 version, etc, etc. You'll really like the road trips. At first I was a bit dissapointed that it wasn't a complete show kinda thing but it works. If you read the little booklet that comes with it you will see that they don't just have a song from one show, then another from a different show. They piece together a couple of songs from the same show be
  7. I remember them playing that "cum on feel the noise" non stop on the radio back in....what the hell was it 82 or so? Now I have an earworm.........
  8. Bobby Weir(d).... Kinda hard to believe him using the phrase "revenue stream" in the article A Man posted. Gimme a break. Hey I'm all for these guys making a ton of dough but who does he think he's kidding with all the crap about digital music. In my experience I meet the same kinda folks swapping files as I did trading tape lists back in the early internet days. Anyway on a different note...have just finished listening to disc 1 of the new road trips series. Not too bad at all. I have been on record many times stating my love for early period Dead, and while this is still the case I gotta
  9. The Travis! Aluminum neck and all.......... If memory serves I belive Jerry broke out the Wolf once or twice back in the 90's. I seem to remember seeing pictures of that somewhere. I love the sound of the guitar as well. Big fan of the Gibson SG he used back in late 60's too. Think Live / Dead era stuff. If any of you has the Fillmore box set that's what he was using back then. I make a point out of listening to that 2-28-69 show at least 2-3 times a month
  10. I'll go out on a limb and say it. 77 is over-rated. No question there was some spectacular playing, the help>slip>franklin's from that time always put a smile on my face and of course the beautiful versions of comes a time from that period are amazing, but ( in my opinion) this is not the best year. Again, this is strictly my opinion as I tend to like the earlier stuff. Not saying 77 doesn't rock....it does, but I just don't get all googly eyed about it. Of course a lot of people probably feel the same way about say 65-74......in later years (post 74) they just don't seem to stetch o
  11. They don't have exact copies but Alembic makes some pretty close looking guitars. They ain't cheap.......... If memory serves there was a big stink about Jerry's axes a few years back. A couple of them were to be auctioned but the surviving members raised a stink stating they (the guitars) belonged to Grateful Dead Productions and were their property. Apparently Jerry gave several of them back to the luthier that made them (Doug Irwin) in his will and Irwin suffered a severe accident and needed the $$$$ for medical expenses or something like that. I forget how it all ended, I think Irwin wa
  12. True enough...you gotta love those "visions" they cranked out back in 95. Certainly there is a lot of good stuff in later years....I just don't find stuff after 76 or so as deep and spacey for the most part. That's the stuff I love, 20 minute darkstars, loooooong playin in the bands, That being said I still dig all the other years, but if I have to choose I take the early years. Aman I agree somewhat. Not a big Jerry on MIDI fan, but there are some cool jams when he lets loose on that. Thanks for the BT info!
  13. Yeah...I'm with AMan with the whole 65-74 thing. I tend to listen to that period about 90% of the time, but there are a few exceptions Spring 77 oif course and there are a few decent late 80's shows out there. These fall 79 shows are a pretty good era though. Like you said Brent shines through, at that point he had been with them what, about 6 months or so?. Anyways according to the dead.net site supposedly there will be a bunch of stuff coming out so...... I can't help it I always scoff up pretty much every vault, DP, etc release....I need to get into the torrent thing I guess but it seems
  14. Well I went ahead and ordered the Road Trips vol 1 today....kinda like complete shows but this seems interesting. Anyone have it yet? If so how is it. 79 is an interesting year, and these fall shows have gotten pretty good reviews so even though it isn't primal dead (67-69) or the great 72-74 years it should be good.
  15. be interesting to see what names are on that Mitchell report.........
  16. Yeah....well every cloud has a silver lining right? The good thing is that I'm free of that place. The job was killing me pretty much. They discovered that I am diabetic when I was in the hospital, so I have had to make some major changes in lifestyle. I was so miserable in that job that I pretty much had been on a 4 year bender, getting drunk and stoned most every night just to deal with the stress. Since September when I went in I have been totally clean, no booze, no herb, eating better, exercising, etc so it's pretty great. I sort of need that kick in the ass I guess. I hated my job but it
  17. Great novel. When I heard about his death I went out today and bought it to re-read. Also got his latest one ( and last) A Castle In The Forest. It's about a demon that disguises as an SS stormtrooper and how he influences Hitler as a youth. That ought to be pretty wild.
  18. Nice huh? Typical corporate shit. I'm all for making a profit and whatnot but the way some corporations go about it....Case in point, I work(ed) for a large fortune 500 company until 2 weeks ago. Back in early September I got really sick. I had Necrotizing Fasciitis (sp?) otherwise known as flesh eating bacteria. I was in the hospital for 11 days and had 2 major surgeries where they pretty much removed most of the flesh from my right upper thigh. So 2 days after my first surgey as I'm laying in the hospital all doped up on morophine this jerk of a boss calls me to ask some questions about som
  19. just starting here in Nashville
  20. Yeah whole shows are the way to go. Hell, I'm sure I'll grab up every one of these though. I like the concept of them releasing some more obscure tour runs however. I mean shit you can never get enough of the fall 72 stuff but there is a lot of good good stuff out there that hasn't really seen the light of day. I'd love to hear some of the Northwest 1968 gigs (other than the King's Bowl on DP). Also more 1971 stuff
  21. Right. I mean if you don't care for a segment of society fine, but to pull that shit at funerals is simply insane.
  22. Maybe in the begining Jones was all about righting social ills and whatnot but that guy turned into a meglomaniac. 3 words....grape kool aid
  23. Just saw on the Dead's web site that they have a new archival series starting out. Called "Road Trips". Instead of complete shows or portions therof they are putting out compilations from specific tours. The first volume is from the fall 1979 tour. Not my favorite year but the track lists look pretty good. I would rather they have complete shows but this might be a cool thing. Here's a link linky
