  1. I like the 1st 2 LPs too, but that shit's funny.
  2. Well that's about the most absurd thing I've seen in this thread. I'm a big Old 97's fan, but to put the Avetts below them is curious. The Avett's are way more bluegrass and way more raw than the 97's. The only way I see them being compared on any level is that they both have been criticized (probably fairly) for trying to use the sex appeal to gain more mainstream popularity.
  3. Not sure what we're expected to say other than the obvious. It's a devastating event. I've said many prayers for the victims and the whole community. I was very confused for a few hours because I thought the explosion was in West Texas (like near Odessa or something) not West, Texas. Also, this story is something. http://gawker.com/5995027/unluckiest-luckiest-man-survives-both-marathon-bombing-and-waco-blast
  4. This seems to either double post or not post at all. Anyway, Mayer's a bit of a tool and a pop diva, but the boy has got chops, no question.
  5. I like Dawes a lot. Listened to the new one today. Very good, but I didn't see much of a departure from the 1st two.
  6. Ima take you word on that one. Not sure I could tolerate that song under any circumstances.
  7. I've made this point before. Gen X folks (under 50 / over, say 30) should start a movement to push retirement age up to 70 by the time we're there. Most of us have benefited from a time of relative peace (at least when we were prime military age) and prosperity. Our sacrifice could be working a bit longer. Save social security and medicare a shitload of money.
  8. Replacements - Hootenanny... Punk Rock that was FUN. Not dour and depressing and monotonous. Bob Mould - Workbook... No album seemed more fated to affect me at a particular time and place in my life. Even though I'd been a big Replacements fan for about 43 years when this came out, I never explored Husker Du. Workbook absolutely floored me. Lush, aggressive, personal, melodic, intimate.
  9. Totally forgot RAGBRAI. Good call! All the eating and drinking of the State Fair, but much less obesity.
  10. Beautiful pic, Hixter! Iowa Game at U of Iowa's Kinnick Stadium Field of Dreams Iowa State Fair Pappajohn Sculpture Park (worth a google, lots of sweet art) Trout fishing the Upper Iowa in NE Iowa Pheasant hunting is the 1st or 2nd biggest tourist draw.
  11. I've got no problem when a message is embedded in an artful presentation. When I saw Mark Olsen and Gary Louris about 9 years ago, Olsen had a bunch of really awful anti-Bush songs. I didn't care for that and I don't care for monologues that detract from the art. It is the artist's right, but, in my view, it's not what I paid to see and I'd remember that the next time I had an opportunity to see that artist.
  12. You are tolerant until you think your loved one's well being is at risk. Being in a polygamist relationship or a cult are not worthy of tolerance because they put that well being at severe risk. If I had a gay child, I would worry about chastisement and (frankly) the social awkwardness that may come with it. So I would struggle but would (hopefully, probably) get over it.
  13. The last 2 are simply awesome. If Sir Duke doesn't make you smile, you probably have no soul. And Buddy? He'll yeah, Moss!
  14. Don't count on it. No matter how accepting you are, I suspect most kids wouldn't tell their parents until a close circle of friends (including some lucky boy or girl) know. I admit I would struggle accepting, but certainly would.
  15. Paul brings up "Sodomy" a couple of times, but it's not in the Gospels. The funny thing is, divorce IS. How many righteous divorcees are the condemning homosexuality?
  16. As a religious person, I am not offended. The loudest voices of Christianity are not those of love and compassion for the outcasts. I am fairly sure that if the Jesus portrayed in the Gospels was alive today he would be befriending gays. I'm also somewhat confident he wouldn't take issue with loving, committed gay couples. Also, if i am wrong, then it's God's job to sort that out, not mine. I hope he is as forgiving as the Gospels portray because I know I require his grace as much as, if not more than, many gay people I know. So, as you can tell, I am a political conservative (at least
  17. The most obvious retort to the whole gay is a choice issue is, "When did you choose to be heterosexual?" As though one could just will this sort of attraction... I actually think this explains a lot of the rampant homophobia, though. Think about the Larry Craig example. This guy probably truly believed he chose heterosexuality, but couldn't (if allegations are true) resist those other urges. 5 or 10 years ago, part of me believed that gays should be happy with "civil unions" with complete equality to marriage besides the name. That way of thinking now seems so obsolete. Hearts are chan
