Michelle Shocked - born again, homophobic bigot?
uncool2pillow replied to Oil Can Boyd's topic in Someone Else's Song
I've got no problem when a message is embedded in an artful presentation. When I saw Mark Olsen and Gary Louris about 9 years ago, Olsen had a bunch of really awful anti-Bush songs. I didn't care for that and I don't care for monologues that detract from the art. It is the artist's right, but, in my view, it's not what I paid to see and I'd remember that the next time I had an opportunity to see that artist. -
Well, duh!

You are tolerant until you think your loved one's well being is at risk. Being in a polygamist relationship or a cult are not worthy of tolerance because they put that well being at severe risk. If I had a gay child, I would worry about chastisement and (frankly) the social awkwardness that may come with it. So I would struggle but would (hopefully, probably) get over it.

The last 2 are simply awesome. If Sir Duke doesn't make you smile, you probably have no soul. And Buddy? He'll yeah, Moss!

Don't count on it. No matter how accepting you are, I suspect most kids wouldn't tell their parents until a close circle of friends (including some lucky boy or girl) know. I admit I would struggle accepting, but certainly would.

Paul brings up "Sodomy" a couple of times, but it's not in the Gospels. The funny thing is, divorce IS. How many righteous divorcees are the condemning homosexuality?

As a religious person, I am not offended. The loudest voices of Christianity are not those of love and compassion for the outcasts. I am fairly sure that if the Jesus portrayed in the Gospels was alive today he would be befriending gays. I'm also somewhat confident he wouldn't take issue with loving, committed gay couples. Also, if i am wrong, then it's God's job to sort that out, not mine. I hope he is as forgiving as the Gospels portray because I know I require his grace as much as, if not more than, many gay people I know. So, as you can tell, I am a political conservative (at least

The most obvious retort to the whole gay is a choice issue is, "When did you choose to be heterosexual?" As though one could just will this sort of attraction... I actually think this explains a lot of the rampant homophobia, though. Think about the Larry Craig example. This guy probably truly believed he chose heterosexuality, but couldn't (if allegations are true) resist those other urges. 5 or 10 years ago, part of me believed that gays should be happy with "civil unions" with complete equality to marriage besides the name. That way of thinking now seems so obsolete. Hearts are chan

There's no doubt that they bring it live. I've never seen them personally and the energy level of a show might give me a different viewpoint, but like I said before, I always liked the Stones studio stuff better and reading how meticulous Keith was in the studio affirmed what I always heard. -

Found this interview on her Wikipedia page. Definitely on the fiscal conservative extreme -- but not too far from me. I wonder if all her statements about things the government has spent money on are accurate. Sounds like some of the typical Michele Bachmann-esque exaggerations. http://blogs.riverfronttimes.com/rftmusic/2010/10/moe_tucker_interview_2010_politics_tea_party_velvet_underground_video.php -

Listening to it now. Jagger's vocals are better than a lot of the live I hear. It's not that I particularly dislike live Stones. I just strongly prefer the studio stuff. I remember my college roommate really liked YaYa's probably the first time I remember intently listening to live Stones. I just did nothing for me. -

The studio. Period. So many great layers that can't be recreated on stage.
