That was a fun show. They did it a time or two at the Auditorium shows as I recall. LouieB

Everyone is better when they are free. The most dismal group can actually be pretty good. Kings of Leon is your basic rock band. I saw them and the were okay. LouieB

I'll reply.... Another indication that the music industry is in shit shape. Good stuff on the list. LouieB

Clearly most VCers are no longer Pitchfork people. (Wilco turned you into dad rockers...?? JK see below.) I only saw one regular VCer Bbop, who came to look at the LPs we were sellling. Actually I can't talk about too many of the acts since I was busy selling most of the time. The crowd was crushing and frankly too much for me. I did see Neko, who I thought was just fine, but clearly old school in a good way. I enjoyed a portion of the Destroyer set. We sold Thurston Moore a couple LPs which was fun (and I bought a copy of his new LP from Music Direct for cheap). I heard lots of music bu

Do any VCers go to Pitchfork? If so come see me to buy some LPs in the CHIRP tent. Let us know who you see and who you liked and didn't like. Gonna be hot though. LouieB

Going to Chicago....what to do, see, stay, etc.

Long ago there was an entire thread about Marina Towers. House of Blues is in what was the movie theater complex that is attached to Marina Towers. And if this hasn't been mentioned before (and it has I am sure) the best place to get a photo is across the Chicago River on Wacker Drive. There is also a bowling alley in the Marina City complex. There is also an upscale rsstaurant and a hotel in the complex as well. LouieB -
I found this interesting. Maybe someone else will also. LouieB July 8, 2011 A-R-E-T-H-A By ROB HOERBURGER Aretha Franklin sat alone with a Coke. It was the night of her 69th birthday, and all around, guests were filing into the Park Room at the Helmsley Park Lane Hotel on Central Park South, bobbing to live music from the vibraphonist Roy Ayers or the mambo prince Tito Puente Jr. Franklin has given herself big birthday parties before, but this one had a certain urgency. A few months earlier, in December, she announced she had undergone an unnamed surgical “procedure,” and word spread that

Did someone here actually see this movie?? My understanding is that most of the action takes place near downtown. Just a clue....the loft isn't near downtown. LouieB -
1. I bought AM sometime during the year it came out. 2. Second night of the Being There tour at Lounge Ax. Back in the last Millenium some time. LouieB

I have a nice and weather-proof Olympus that I like. LouieB -
The cover art for the new album is already better than the cover art for the last record. I have high hopes. LouieB

And obviously no one cares anymore. LouieB

Really nice. LouieB

That is a good version. (Thanks for reminding me..i do have this in my collection.) They also kicked ass on Paul Simon's Hazy Shade of Winter. (another song that stands up to cover versions...) The Bangles are one of the great cover bands of all time... LouieB

The question is which is the better song, not which is the better record. Waterloo Sunset can be sung effectively by any number of singers because it is a great song; September Gurls is not widely covered and the references to what a great song it is are mostly to the recording made by Big Star itself. (Can anyone name a cover of it??) There are some clear glitches on the original Kinks recording, but the over all effect of the song is still pretty powerful. Much of what we all like about the Big Star song is the excellent production and arrangement. SG was recorded from 1974 after Alex C

Jon Brion says that if there is one song he wished he had written it would be Waterloo Sunset. A great song can be sung by anyone and still retain it's majesty. WS is one of those songs. Any two bit guitar slinger can fire it up and catch people's attention. It has this wonderful tension and atmosphere. It stands on its own in any setting with great tune and words and doesn't need much else. LouieB

ALL RIGHT!!! FINALLY!! LouieB

No question. Waterloo Sunset is one of the best songs ever written. September Gurls pales in comparison. The words, the tune, the sentiment. All perfect!! September gurls do so much I was your butch and you were touched I loved you well never mind I've been crying all the time December boys got it bad. September gurls I don't know why how can I deny what's inside even thought I keep away maybe we'll love all our days. When I get to bed late at night that's the time she makes things right ooh when she makes luv to me vs. Dirty old river, must you keep rolling Flowing into the night

Actually most people in Chicago have never heard of Pekin, IL either. It is a small town near Peoria, a place many Chicagoans have never evem been to (Peoria I mean.) The Pekin Chinks is a pretty funny story though isn't it. I drove through Pekin one time in my travels around the state. Pekin = boring small town. Someone someday should ask Jeff why he picked it out of all the small towns in IL to lampoon. LouieB

Best song about Pekin, IL ever. LouieB
