Right.....Avreeyal played with Frequency (Niki Mitchell, Ed Wilkerson, Harrison Bankhead) a few weeks later and their show was fantastic. I made it through about 2/3 of the second set and then sadly had to bail. But they were well worth the loss of sleep and the lost day of work the next day. It is just so great that the north and southside scenes are finally starting to interact more (the Ken Vandermark 5 is playing the new Velvet Lounge tonight for example.) LouieB

yea, it would pretty wild to see an infomercial for a set like that, not unlike the "malt shop" compilation that is hawked late at night on the off channels. There are a number of great songs that could be included: Eve of Destruction The Ballad of the Greem Berets The War Drags On Ohio etc.etc. LouieB

This is some fascinating stuff actually. I recently ordered the book that this comp is based on and the story of George W. Johnson alone is worth checking out. Not only did this guy (the first black recording star) have to do the same handful of songs over and over again, he literally had to do them over and over, because early recordings were direct to disk, since they had no way to make a master and then stamp out copies until years later. So this poor guy (along with every other recording artist in the late 1800's and early 1900s) had to sing or play into a recording machine over and ove

Yea, leave it to me to get the name wrong.....I kept flashing on the movie that Glenn ran behind it when he played with Nels here. There were lots of dancing monkeys in that. Lots of dancing other characters too. LouieB

I will buy it..thanks... Are you guys saying that this one is sold out? The Thurston Moore was NOT an Immediate Sound show, which are always on Wednesdays and currated by Ken Vandermark. I was at the one Frequency did a few weeks back and it was not sold out and the second set was only half full. Edit-there appear to be tickets on the web. If this sells out it will be a real shock. Then again, I suppose the extra $2 may be worth it if you want to see Glenn (which I do), but remember he isn't doing the Monkey Dance, etc, he is playing whatever the group he is playing with is playing. Nah, I got more to say....just didn't have time before. The Scott Amendola group was fantastic. Anchored by Scott and his bass player (John Shifflett), along with Jenny Scheinman on violin was great in and of itself, but then add Jeff Parker and Nels Cline on guitars and it was fantastic. Until I had heard the CD last week I didn't know what to expect, figuring it might be something kind of out there, but it wasn't. In fact, despite some excellent improvisation during the numbers, most were well arranged and had clear composition and intent. In fact the band was reading charts, so it was

No, Newman was never compared to Dylan, though John Prine was.... LouieB

Which other dudes?? Both are good. Rosie is doing the film and acting thing at SIU and Ray has finally sworn off video games with his friends. LouieB

My son, Brother Ray is currently obsessed with Bob Dylan, listening exclusively to him 24/7. Meanwhile my daughter, the former VCer Tweedy's Gurl, hates everthing Bruce with the exception of Nebraska, which she tolerates grudgingly. Hey, isn't anyone going to mention John Prine here?? LouieB

Hey I gave you everything you need to find the entire catalogue..go get it already....and yes it is one word. You will find it all sort of low fi/DIY kind of music. These guys were not the world's greatest musicians, but their unique take on stuff is what makes them interesting. I would also check out the Coctails, which is ARcher Prewitt's first group. They have a similar lowfi-DIY vibe, but sometimes more interesting ideas. Their box set that came out a year or so ago is equally as good or maybe a bit better. The packaging on both box sets is pretty cool and the CD versions of their albums

Gotta dig into the stack of vinyl I have never listened to.....what should it be? Edit-The Beach Boys in Concert which I found on vinyl for a buck this week. LouieB

ACtually I did forget and agreed to go to dinner with some friends, but then one had a slight medical issue and canceled so I was off the hook for that. If anyone has the stamina (not me, I was out shooting a vid last night,) the Dials are playing the late show, which is being dedicated to their drummer who was killed a year ago. LouieB

I will certainly take it. PMing my cell phone. I keep worrying it will sell out too, but I am going on faith it won't. LouieB

Not solo.....both in other groups....either way it is pretty damn cool. I think the article on tomorrow's show is worth the bandwidth here. LouieB Amendola's jazz vision crystallizes into a true dream band By Bob Gendron Special to the Tribune February 2, 2007 Scott Amendola is addicted to ideas. The San Francisco-based percussionist gets so stimulated by the blending of sonic possibilities that he is sometimes overwhelmed, and needs to remind himself he's not crazy. "There are times where I've thought maybe I should just quit my music because I like playing with [crooner] Madeleine
