  1. The Great Beauty is probably in my top 10 films of last year, and one of the few I saw last year that I'd probably watch again. I really dug the lead character, the quirky way the story unfurled and the beautiful cinematography. The film felt modern with a big foot in the world of Antonioni and Fellini. The Hunt is also right up there for me as far as Oscar nominated foreign films go. I'm with you Bleedorange, Shailene Woodley was quite fantastic in The Spectacular Now. The film was probably the best "teen drama" I've seen since The Perks of Being a Wallflower. I guess I'd throw The Way
  2. Damien Jurado - Brothers and Sisters of the Eternal Son
  3. Entwhistle was a unique and gifted bass player for sure, but not the greatest songwriter or singer in the band. Are we rating virtuosity and dexterity here? Musical talent and technical ability aren't necessarily synonymous.
  4. According to the Ken Scott book I'm currently reading (Abbey Road to Ziggy Stardust,) Paul was using a Fender Jazz bass and a Fender VI bass for the White Album, not the Rickenbacker. He also says that they doubled the regular bass part with a 6-string bass on quite a few tracks: Piggies, While My Guitar Gently Weeps, Glass Onion and Rocky Raccoon. The books also says that both parts were played together and never overdubbed.
  5. I'm glad I saw a couple of the Riot Fest shows as Coachella is pretty much out of the question for me. They pretty much played a variation of the same set at all the Riot Fest shows. If it's the same thing at Coachella I'll definitely feel better about not going.
  6. The other book thread was started in 2011, not sure it needed to be locked. Anyhow, next up:
  7. Yeah, upon closer inspection definitely an Epiphone. I'm guessing it's the Epiphone SG Custom with Maestro Tremolo (Limited Edition): http://www.musiciansfriend.com/guitars/epiphone-limited-edition-sg-custom-with-maestro-electric-guitar
  8. Yeah, that is a sharp looking guitar. I really love the color too. At first I thought it was an SG. Can't quite make out the model, what is it?
  9. I must be in the minority. I think Third is a fantastic record, Musically, emotionally, and from a production standpoint it has more range than the first two records. I love those first two records to death, and listen to them more than Third, but I still think it is in its own way is as strong as #1 Record and Radio City.
  10. Here's my quick take on "Art of Almost" F#m (244222) A (577655) E (022100) riff during chorus -------------------------- -------------------------- -------------------------- -------------------------- ----h--h--h--p---------- --0--2--4--5--4---0---
  11. The Rise & Fall of Paramount Records, Volume 1 (1917-1927)
  12. Virginia Astley - From Gardens Where We Feel Secure Paul Quinn & The Independent Group - Will I Ever Be Inside of You
  13. Curtis is one of my all-time fave musicians so this would be something I'd dig for sure. Hope you guys have a good time.
  14. One of the few bands where I try to buy their new records on release day. Looking forward to hearing what the latest incarnation of the band comes up with.
  15. I listened to "In the Throes" earlier, pretty darn great. I have a feeling this one is going to be getting a lot of spins.
  16. Watched this a few times earlier today. Not sure what version is my favorite, but the floating cartoon cat singing Dylan has to be up there.
  17. I would have to say start right at the beginning with "Songs of Leonard Cohen." I mean, holy shit, how many great songs are on that record: "Suzanne," "Sisters of Mercy," "So Long, Marianne," "Hey, That's No Way to Say Goodbye".... Such a great record. After that I'd go with "Songs from a Room" and "Song's of Love and Hate."
  18. I was curious too. Turns out it's the latest from Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros.
  19. She's a great performer--have a feeling she's been studying Prince a lot--and her last two records are pretty darn great too for that matter.
  20. Got this at the library the other week. Lots of talk about music, records, Sly, Stevie, Prince... right up my alley.
