  1. I'm always happy to see a new Sloan record coming. Too bad it isn't coming out earlier, their stuff is often the perfect soundtrack for the summer.
  2. I couldn't listen to the show here in Canada, so big thanks for doing that.
  3. I'm with you Beltman. The initial premise is very far-fetched, but once I bought into it, I was drawn into this stylized fable about class distinction and disparity. I loved the different sets and color palettes used throughout the film, from the bleak browns and grays in the back of the train to the bright, saturated colors of the people and train cars of the front. Not sure yet if it will crack my top 10 at the end of the year, but for now it belongs there.
  4. A.M. - Box Full of Letters Being There - Sunken Treasure Summerteeth - She's a Jar Yankee Hotel Foxtrot - Ashes of American Flags A Ghost Is Born - Theologians Sky Blue Sky - You Are My Face Wilco (The Album) - One Wing The Whole Love - One Sunday Morning
  5. I'm a Moodysson fan too. Show Me Love and Together are probably my favorites along with the one I mentioned earlier. Snowpiercer was an interesting film, and it has a good cast. Definitely worth checking out.
  6. I haven't caught up on many of the films I've wanted to see this year--thanks for the list Beltman, you've given me a few more to look out for--so my list will be a bit light. The list isn't in any particular order: Jodorowsky's Dune / Frank Pavich / USA & France The Grand Budapest Hotel / Wes Anderson / USA Locke / Steven Knight / UK & USA Museum Hours / Jem Cohen / Austria Mistaken for Strangers / Tom Berninger / USA We Are the Best! / Lukas Moodysson / Sweden & Denmark
  7. I'm pretty sure Pretty Ballerina was a top 20 hit too, but yeah, Walk Away Renee is the one everyone remembers.
  8. About halfway through this entertaining read. Tommy Wiseau is an interesting character to say the least.
  9. Just going by the ones I've played the most so far (in no particular order): Sun Kil Moon - Benji St. Vincent - St. Vincent Drive-by Truckers - English Oceans Real Estate - Atlas The War on Drugs - Lost in the Dream The Hold Steady - Teeth Dreams Lydia Loveless - Somewhere Else Old 97's - Most Messed Up Mac DeMarco - Salad Days Various Artists - Boring Ecstasy: The Bedroom Pop of Orchid Tapes Each Other - Being Elastic Stephen Malkmus & The Jicks - Wig Out at Jag Bags Doug Paisley - Strong Feelings There's a bunch that I've listened to once or twice that will probably make the list wi
  10. Along the lines of Tinnitus' recommendation, the Nigerian band Blo had a couple great rock/funk/psych records out in the '70s. If you like Os Mutantes, Funkadelic, Sly & The Family Stone, and the whole '60s psychedelic sound you'll probably dig them:
  11. I dig a lot of Zimbabwean musician Thomas Mapfumo's stuff: A few more artists/albums to add for now: Babatunde Olatunji - Drums of Passion Orchestra Baobab - Pirates Choice Of course there's the obvious ones to mention like Fela Kuti and Ali Farka Toure who are both worth delving into.
  12. I recall there being some sort of box set that was supposed to come out a few years back. Not sure what happened to that. There were also some bootleg comps of his home recordings that were circulating years back, but I never managed to get my hands on any of those. There's a few things on YouTube of unreleased stuff: Peter covering Wild Horses, See No Evil, some Dylan, etc. Hopefully one day someone gathers up all this stuff and we get a proper compilation.
  13. I saw Television Saturday night. What a great show.
  14. I didn't realize they'd done another season of The Trip, that's fantastic. Time to do some catching up.
  15. I've been watching it. The first episode was a bit hit and miss for me, but I think it has settled into a nice groove now.
  16. Agreed. I thought of Caetano too, but Os Mutantes are more "rock and roll" so I went with them. Though the whole "Rock and Roll Hall of Fame" thing should be renamed as everything from folk to hip-hop is represented.
  17. Yeah, me too. His stuff holds up quite well for the most part. The same can't be said for a lot of his '80s contemporaries
  18. I can't believe T. Rex isn't in yet, wow. Same goes for the MC5 and Gram. Not gonna say these bands/artist will never get in, but they should be there already: Harry Nilsson Thin Lizzy Mott the Hoople Todd Rundgren Os Mutantes Lee Hazlewood Big Star
  19. "Trouble Will Find Me debuted at #3 on the US Billboard 200 with 74,722 copies sold in its first week." Those are pretty good numbers by todays standards. Anyway, there are bands in the RaRHoF that never placed an album in the top 40 so the numbers ain't everything, at least sometimes.
  20. Possible future candidates: The Black Keys St. Vincent The National
  21. You guys have mentioned some greats ones. I'll add a few more: James Brown - Funky Drummer (probably the most sampled song ever) The Who - Won't Get Fooled Again (especially for Pete's innovative use of synth/organ throughout the track) The Beatles - Strawberry Fields (and probably a dozen others for that matter) Prince - When Doves Cry
  22. You can count me as a fan. Thanks for the link Louie.
