You are talking out of two sides of your mouth here. You support (or at least acknowledge) the fact that there are background checks on all new gun sales. That is a good thing IMHO. However for private sales there is no background check. (And something I believe you disagree with.) There is nothing to keep those guns out of the hands of the mentally ill. You can sell a gun to any damn fool you want to. No one would know. I would even think gun owners would want a record of a sale, just for the liability factors. If your goal is to keep the guns out of the hands of the mentally ill (wh

Come on, you know that isn't true. Private party gun sales in many areas do not require background checks. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/12/21/private-gun-sales-sandy-hook_n_2347420.html I have said it before and I will say it again, there is more a of record of me selling and buying a car then of many gun sales.

You know mental health is always thrown out as a solution to the gun violence problem, but I have not seen or heard of one piece of legislation or policy that truly addresses this. However I do see that Sen Graham has proposed such a measure. But he says this, “I believe that the best way to interrupt the shooter is to have a mental health system that actually records and enters into the database people who should not be able to buy a gun.” But since as we have discussed pro gun does not want background checks, so any such database of the mentally ill is toothless. A mentally ill person s

Why does it even matter? The gun debate is so ridiculous, the right refuses to budge on any type of sensible gun reform and we are still left with the possibility of the horrors we witnessed in Newtown. But you got your digs on Joe Biden, good for you! It is a sorry tiresome debate and a sad comment on our society.

I didn't want my question to be politically charged in nature, it was an honest question, why is anyone against marriage equality. From my reading of this board, I am hard pressed to find anyone here who does not support marriage equality, even from those people who some may consider "right wing." The only post really in this thread was from justme, but he went into a self imposed exile or something. His reasonings were not really made clear. I find it interesting how even though many who identify with the GOP now support marriage equality. It is also interesting how far out of touch l

Just wondering is there anyone here on this board that is against marriage equality? If so why?

Absolutely a fantastic "prequel" to the Bells of St. John. Matt Smith is getting to be a better actor with each episode.

Quicksands/Cradlesnakes is by far my favorite album to come out in past 10 years. I absolutely love it and still listen to it on a weekly basis. You defiantly cannot go wrong with this album. I also really like Roots and Crowns, which is fantastic as well.

Well it looks like we are going have another fight over the Debt Ceiling! I am certainly glad the GOP likes to play hostage with the full faith and credit of the US government. http://www.reuters.com/article/2013/03/21/usa-fiscal-debt-idUSL1N0CDIBH20130321 Ugh.

I agree most everything you said here, with one exception. I believe we have turned the corner on the economy but we are not at the point were should start considering deficit reduction (and per lost highway's chart we are doing that). True deficit reduction needs to come, I understand that, but with an unemployment rate of 7.7% (and if you believe the right wing hype machine it is much higher) now is not the time to cut spending. I saw on the news this morning our infrastructure grade is now a D+, which is up from a 2009 grade of D. So our nation is falling part not in the esoteric eco

But don't you see if we don't stop the massive government spending immediately it will be the end of society as we know it! It will be fire and brimstone! It will be cats and dogs living together! Mass hysteria! Really no one has answered me, why the GOP see the need that we need to tackle the deficit this very minute, rather then be smart and try to grow the economy first? And if we have to solve this debt crisis the only way do it is through spending cuts (and not the military).

It is pretty true. It truly is a shame that the far right has dominated the conservative voice for the last 30 years or so. For all my leftist ranting and raving, I honestly think true conservative values have a place in our society. I also think they give a needed balance. However I would not call one person speaking at C-PAC a conservative. I would call them right wing, neo-converatives, but conservative no. I really blame the moral majority people and the Christian right. Republicans in power (and by in power i mean in the media as well) are not conservatives. Right now the GOP i

So PBO said that there was no debt crisis looming over our heads and Boehner agrees with him. If you agree with them or not, why is the GOP budget so focused on cutting spending? Right now our economic recovery is very fragile at best, shouldn't we focus our efforts fixing the economy rather then cutting programs for the people who need it most? Get people working and once we are humming along then fix the debt problem to try to do it now would be disastrous. To clarify I don't think we should raise taxes nor do I think we should cut spending. Ideally we need a mix of infrastructure sp

I friend of mine has a theory, all the Cardinals want to be pope so they pick the one who is going to die next. Apparently the new Pope only has one lung.

I believe the deficit spending crisis is a ginned up problem because the GOP doesn't like the guy in office. So that is like asking me to a dance I don't want to go to. But yes I would pay more in taxes, how much more who knows. Sure it is entirely possible to reduce the deficit with just spending cuts (but not the Military heaven forbid) and that would reduce deficit but bhow much? You seem to believe that our current deficit spending is going to spell doom and gloom for this country and it is something we have to take care immediately. There really is no feasible way to solely cut ou
-
With that attitude you are not serious about deficit reduction. You claim the debt is such a huge problem and it needs to be fixed, but your only solution is to cut spending. Then you are for cutting spending and programs (unless it is defense which memory serves you are not in favor of cutting, if I am wrong please let me know). I could care less about your stance on spending cuts, but don't dance around this BS of caring about the deficit, clearly you don't.

You fail to get my point and decide to stand on a soapbox and rail against the evils of the Affordable Healthcare Act. I never said one way if it was good or bad nor is that important to my over all argument at this time. Irregardless of what anyone thinks of Obamacare it is going to stick around. There is nothing anyone can really do about it. By Ryan planning the repeal in his budget shows he is not serious about deficit reduction. This what I have been trying to say over and over again. The GOP isn't serious about the deficit and never will be. If they were they would do a mix of ent

Actually there are quite a few differences: http://rooseveltinstitute.org/new-roosevelt/federal-budget-not-household-budget-here-s-why http://articles.latimes.com/2011/aug/24/opinion/la-oe-craighead-spending-20110824 But those articles are written by economists. The problem with the household analogy is that is over simplifies the problem. The US economy is insanely complex, it sure does sound nice in theory but actual practice it does absolutely no good. I understand why they were "forced into austerity" but have these measures helped the Greek economy? Drastically cutt
-
Again you are taking a simple household finance model and trying to make that apply to the US government. It is so much bigger than that, there is so much more that. Simplifying it does no good to help the problem. Neither you or uncool2pillow did not respond to my scenario, go ahead balance the budget and take a trillion dollars from the economy what does your common sense tell you what would happen? Listen, I am not saying we shouldn't reduce the deficit, nor does Mr. Krugman. At this point in our fragile economy it doesn't make sense, it would do far more damage then the good it
-
But you are comparing apples to oranges here. Comparing household finances and the government finances is overly simplifying the role of the government. Making that argument is ridiculous and really makes no sense in how the government actually spends. And I think to fully understand the US economy you absolutely have to be an economist. Neither you nor me really have any inkling of what the US Economy is all about. I am wondering if you actually read the article. Krugman states he is all for reducing the deficit, but at this time it doesn't make sense. All you have to do is look a

So this thread took an odd turn over the last three days. I don't want to get in the middle of anything here so I just thought I would share an op-ed from the NYT by Paul Krugman. Which says that deficit spending is not a bad thing. http://www.nytimes.com/2013/03/11/opinion/krugman-dwindling-deficit-disorder.html?ref=paulkrugman&_r=1& What seems odd here, again and I have mentioned it before, is that all of a sudden that the GOP now see running up a big debt as a problem. But they were sure happy to run up the debt under Regan and GWB, with no intention of ever paying it back.
-
There is plenty of news and economists that say contrary. It is all where you get your news. I can only assume that your common sense will lead to your nomination to the next Fed Chair. Slow Clap: I guess congratulations are in order for being so smart with your money and foreseeing trends before they happen. Listen I am being generally dickish here, and I admit that. But the US economy is extremely complex, more so then guns and other stuff we have talked about. But people tend to talk with so much authority on the subject, and frankly all of the news articles cannot match t

I love all of this arm chair quarterbacking we all do around here. As far as I know no one here is economist, let alone educated to the degree that Ben Bernanke and the other members of the Fed are. So either y'all think the Fed is either stupid or purposely hurting economy of the US. And at least to me there is no one here who can honestly say they understand the complexity that is the US and Global economic system.
