  1. nice! i was not in the mood for live music just yet after SXSW so I bailed (that and i'm not exactly HUGE on both Carl and the Broken West's latest records). glad to hear it was a great show though and hopefully a good turnout. i saw him at the Triple Rock on the Slow Wonder tour and it was a ton of fun as well. now if i'd known Nicole was touring with him i might have made an effort to get there
  2. hey now, i still really enjoyed it! not negative, just not as great
  3. it doesn't sound TOO much like Death Cab to me and i was a pretty big fan up until Plans. i'd say it reminds me of The Shins more than Death Cab, at least musically.
  4. i'm kinda with you... i liked the last Lucero record, but the keys thing def threw me for a loop somewhat. but besides that I just didn't feel like the songwriting was up there with their previous records
  5. it's a bit of a continuation of the prog they picked up on parts of Crane Wife, but goes even further.
  6. well... first off, they'll never touch Her Majesty or Castaways imo, and they've been on a slide ever since.... that said, i think this one works for me better as an all around album than the last 2, but it doesn't have nearly the singular highs of either of those records for me. solid 7/10 for me tho. there's 2-3 songs i don't like at all on the record tho too.
  7. ah, i was seeing Vivigan Girls on the Lamar bridge around then
  8. damn this IS really good... Merge is usually pretty spot on now i'm bummed i didn't check them out in Austin last week :/ they're coming to town in a week with Say Hi but i'm already going to Heartless Bastards & Gaslight Anthem that night.
  9. well, i should say that i've NEVER ever ever paid attention to Jimi's lyrics, even on the first 2 great records.
  10. i think the title cut is def the most mainstream track on the record
  11. the run from Winter Hill->10:03->The Greatest Denier is one of their best 3 song punches to date imo. i'm not HUGE on Compulsion yet... it's very Sub Sub-ish too, even moreso than Jetstream (which i've grown to like) so far i'd say I disagree that the second half of the album is better, but after one listen i really REALLY like this record
  12. through track 5 this is REAL good... Winter Hill is just immense. i honestly don't expect them to top the first 2 for me ever, but this one is off to a better start than Some Cities got with me (which i grew to love)
  13. apparently he's rehearsed 64 songs for the upcoming tour
  14. well i've played enough shows to understand how frustrating it can be, but the thing is, the rest of the band seemed to be having no problem with it that night, and Ben just let it ruin his attitude and night, which was a bummer.
  15. good record, just not the Keys best. it's way better than Magic Potion tho
  16. i've seen them 5x and i'd have to say they're hit or miss... first time i saw them Ben was just fucking around the entire show (granted this was when Matt Brooks was still in the band) and joking about weed for large portion of the show (it was funny, but got old). when they're on they're really good though, but the last First Ave show Ben just complained about the sound the entire night (it sounded just fine in the crowd fwiw) ala Ryan Adams. luckily 2 weeks later at the Fillmore in San Fran they redeemed themselves. Ben's a great dude tho, his wife lives in Minneapolis and i've seen him
  17. hmm... too early to say, but i love the shit out of the title track. def wouldn't say it's my least fave, but there are def better tracks
  18. yup. their last 3 have just been totally stellar
  19. i'm not surprised a lot of people are saying this "surpassed" Fox for them, that one, while great is probably her 3rd best album anyway even prior to this new one being released. it's def grown on me a lot more, but wouldn't say it's in my top 5 on the year at this point. then again i think the only Neko album to crack my EOY top 10's was Blacklisted in '02
  20. they're backing Daniel @ SXSW too, i'll be checking that out
  21. it's close though... but you're right, that one was just amazing "that fucker" = Cramer? that guy always seems like he's on speed to me
  22. i don't hate Cramer by any means, but i thought the episode was amazing and one of the most enjoyable things i've watched on TV in a LONG long long time. at the end of the day, it was still entertainment too however... let's not forget that. but i def. agreed w/ Jon's main crux that for people like Cramer, investing is a game, much like playing the tables in Vegas, but for a sizable chunk of Americans, investing is just that... INVESTING in your future. sure there's always some risks involved with investing, but Cramer and his types get to just shrug it off whenever something they recommen
  23. that's Low's best album by far, nice
