i hear ya... i mean do people complain about BB King still "drumming the blues thing into the ground"? imo it's about sticking to what you do well rather than experimenting just for the sake of. that said, they still experimented plenty for me on the last record.

their cover of the Everly Brothers 'Gone Gone Gone' from the record kicks ass: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8x78Fm4CMWQ

fucking LOVE Raising Sand... but was pretty huge Krauss fan prior i suppose.
-
not too much. My Last Mistake = CCR meets older Clapton imo as for the Keys... what Matt said... they changed quite a bit over the last 2 records compared to The Big Come Up. i'll take great songs even if the formula isn't that different, vs. what the White Stripes offered their last few albums (haven't really loved an album of theirs since WBC). nevermind the fact that i much MUCH prefer Dan's vocals and guitar tone
-
fair enough... whereas they Keys been a fave of mine for the last 6-7 years and i think their last record was their best to date it's actually closer to the Keys sound than i expected... i figured it'd be a more solo acoustic sounding thing rather than being way more full band than the Keys, which i might have preferred... hard to say
-
yeah, his voice is still fantastic, but doesn't always have that same sick guitar tone from the Keys records, i definitely miss that. that said, 'My Last Mistake' is a fucking HIT if i ever heard one
-
oof, while i dig it quite a bit, no way on god's green earth would i consider Dan's solo record better than the Keys. it's better than Magic Potion though, that's for sure.

hmm... i have heard some of those, but guess i'd have to listen more closely to pick up on that -

one question i wanted to ask during the in-studio was if Mark & Gary followed each others output while they were apart. ie: did Mark check out the Jayhawks records after he left the band, if so, does he have a favorite record/song from that era. and vice versa re: Gary checking out Mark's solo records + Creekdippers, etc. and also if there was any time while writing songs for the records after Mark left, did Gary feel like some songs were written with their harmonizing in mind. -

yup, it was discussed during the Current in-studio: http://minnesota.publicradio.org/display/w...5/louris_olson/ -
very good album. love what he did with Doomsday. it seems a bit uneven tracklisting wise though... the mellower acoustic stuff all up front with the fuller band + horn stuff at the end.
-
the sampler i have doesn't have that song unfortunately. supposed to be getting the full thing in the mail any day. that said, he covered it when i saw him last fall and it was very very good. fairly true to the original, but more uptempo and had a bit of his funkier vibe to it. hoping the studio take is similar.
-
that's one of mine too but yeah, for being a random compilation of studio sessions, Demolition is pretty great. Chin Up Cheer Up is prolly a top 10 Ryan solo song for me
-
me too... did not expect it to be that great in all honesty, as i've only enjoyed a few covers of that song, but damn it's great. the horns are especially great. not so huge on the breakdown w/ Craig & Franz singing, mostly because Franz's voice bugs me a bit, but overall it's fantastic. there's a sampler of this going around... the Kooks cover of Victoria is pretty true to the original, Duffy's cover of Live and Let Die is awful, Lily's Straight To Hell cover is kinda blah sadly, but Elbow's cover of Running To Stand Still is stunning.

loved it. Mark's voice should have been slightly lower than Gary's imo, but still sounded very good. that song is from around '90-91, pretty neat -
i've been tempted to make that my life goal, making sure everyone on earth has heard that album

fantastic. cannot wait until the end of the month.

yeah, the more i look there's a handful of jam/rootsier acts, but it's certainly much MUCH more indie-centric than it's been
