weird... in an interview we did w/ him last October he said he used an 8-track and an SM-57 at his cabin for all of the recording and mixed it later using a very old Pro-Tools setup, but i found that interview you're referring to on mp3.com that contradicts that. huh... well, regardless it sounds very natural & warm to my ears, no matter what it was recorded onto . and again here he talks about using an 8-track on the Onion AV club: AVC: What's your approach to writing lyrics? how come? it's quite easy to overdub vocals with even a 4-track analog recorder... don't believe me if you want, but he mentioned it to us first-hand. Justin is a fantastic producer (produced the last 2 Rosebuds album and the latest Land of Talk record)

for those that DO like Justin's voice and music, there's 2 of his early solo recordings that are finally circulating. i've had Hazeltons for a few months and some of it is very similiar to the Bon Iver record. The other one is a bit more mix & match release, with some demos, some live stuff, etc. His voice on some of that is his older/deeper Springsteen-ish voice like on the DeYarmond Edison records. as for those who can't get into it or find it overrated, i guess i can understand... i don't know how i'd have reacted to hearing it after all the hype either. PP is overrated, but i still love enough of it to consider it a great record and i've heard 2 songs off the new one so far, neither really changed my opinion, but i wasn't annoyed by them at least... Paste has kinda lost their way as of late... i don't even know if it'll be in my top 20 and i'm a pretty huge M. Ward fanboy. it's a "pleasant" but not great album

if there's one band post '00 that i just do not GET whatsoever... it's Animal Collective there's a few songs i've enjoyed here or there, but on the whole i usually just get angry/annoyed whenever i listen to their stuff. funny thing is, i LOVE Panda Bear (esp Person Pitch)

see... now i just couldn't get that into the first 2 albums save for 4-5 songs on each record. i didn't really care for the whole orchestral/string-based stuff, not when it comes to hip hop at least. i love that he embraced the 80's and techno on Graduation. plus you've got insane hooks like Champion, Stronger, Good Morning, Can't Tell me Nothin', Good Life, etc., i loved all but 2 songs on that record. as for this new one... after a bunch of listens last night (after that initial akward first listen, i'm LOVING about 2/3 of 808's... yes the auto-tune can be annoying at times, but there's ot

through one listen i'm kinda so-so on it... it all just sounds SO so similiar and with the auto-tune it's easy to lose track of where one song begins and the other ends frankly... BUT, some of it is really great pop (Paranoid is killer), even if nothing gets me really interested like his past work (esp the last, which was the one that got me into him fully). hoping a lot of it grows on me more, this album is going to sound dated fairly quickly imo however but for what he set out to do, it's a huge success. i'd honestly say on first listen i'd give it a solid 7/10, which bodes well for fu

i don't mind some Kiss, but i realize most of the love for them stems from the whole comic book/larger than life factor, which is lost on most folks who weren't like 10-18 when they were big in the 70's. musically they're kinda shit save for a handful of songs

fair enough, like i said, i didn't know off the top of my head who did the final mix on the last 3, so then yeah, if someone takes issue w/ the instrument separation, then he is at fault in those cases, just wanted to point out that isn't really the role of the producer production sound & technique are definitely very much personal preference as i pointed out though. like, Nigel Godrich is a well respected producer, but other than a few things he's done, i think he's one of the most overrated producers around. meanwhile, my favorite producer of the last 10-15 years is J. Robbins

other than Tom Joad, it's his best post '80's record for me, and his best all around rock record since BITUSA. which maybe says more about his late 80's output than anything (i really enjoy Tunnel of Love for what it is, but The Rising rocks harder)

personal preference. i worked in a studio for quite a while myself, trust me, Brendan knows what he's doing and Bruce wouldn't let him do it if he didn't agree or want it that way himself, so put a good chunk of your blame on Bruce himself then. while i don't like his production on Magic, and D&D is just a boring album despite production, his production on The Rising is just fine for me. not to mention Brendan's great production on Pearl Jam's 4 best albums and his work w/ Rage, Matthew Sweet, and many other acts.
