  1. Ahhh Mad Magazine. I haven't thought of you since I was 9.
  2. Huh. The Detroit sports press are treating it like a mystery, and are making guesses as to what went sour. I don't think Dombrowski has made a statement to the press. Avila's, at his press conference, made a curious statement - that they intend for the Tigers to compete for a playoff spot this year. So my guess that Ilitch and Dombrowski were not on the same page as far as being buyers or sellers at the trade deadline. Fragile times for Ilitch lately. Losing Babcock from the Wings, canning Dombrowski, getting bad press over his stadium deal for the Wings, being old, his choices in toupees
  3. Where did you read that he resigned? Everything I've read says that Ilitch canned him.
  4. They did not impress me at Pitchfork. Love their albums, but the music is lacking. Maybe they're a small venue band, and not a festival band?
  5. I think Ilitch has been playing chess with the Reaper for quite some time, and he very desperately wants a WS ring before the devil comes to collect his due. Norris pitched very well. They should have a ton of cash to play with in the off season. It was a smart move to sell this year - they might only be 3.5 games out of the wild card spot, but there's six teams ahead of them. If Verlander returns to form (curse you Kate Upton), they could be good again next year. Dombrowski did a great job in Detroit. Took them to the WS twice, and their recent 4 division titles in a row is unprecedent
  6. From the Freep: "I would like to thank Dave Dombrowski for his 14 years of service," Ilitch said in a released statement. "Together, we've enjoyed some success, but we're still in aggressive pursuit of our ultimate goal: to bring a World Series title to Detroit and Michigan. I've decided to release Dave from his contract in order to afford him the time to pursue other career opportunities. I feel this is the right time for the Tigers to move forward under new leadership."
  7. Well, obviously. His contract was up at the end of the year. Ilitch probably made him his best offer, and Dombrowski probably turned it down, so Ilitch didn't want to wait until the season was over.
  8. Wow. That's stunning. I guess that means Ilitch thought that they shouldn't have been sellers this year?
  9. DLP15 is how my Dave's Picks 15 first disc was labeled when I downloaded it into itunes.
  10. Full disclaimer. I waited until after midnight (wife and kids long in bed) Saturday night to listen to DLP15. I was prepping an overnight smoke of a pork butt, (weber smokey mountain, Kingsford charcoal, pecan and apple chunks, warm water in the basin, pork was salted 24 hours in advance, then rubbed about an hour before the smoke) Once the smoker hit 225, around 12:30, I put the shoulder on, then retrieved a 4-pack of Ommegang Fleur de Houblon Summer Ale (conveniently put on sale from $8.99 to $4.99 the day before), tipped my hat to the day-after full moon, then hit my own smoker for a tok
  11. I think the new Dave's Pick is wonderful. The sound is really good, and the playing is nice. I think the Tennessee Jed is one of the best I've heard, and Jack Straw has a special energy to it. Also love the Estimated Prophet. Good all around. Loving it so far.
  12. Last night I was poking around the local library while my wife was looking for a new book. I started perusing the CDs, and found a JGB show put out by Rhino: Jerry Garcia Collection Vol. 2: Let it Rock (Nov 17 & 18, 1975, Keystone Berkeley), featuring Nicky Hopkins. I've only listened to a the first couple songs, but so far it's great. The sound is really good. There must be a Deadhead working for the library, because the catalog even includes Dick's Picks #8. So, thanks to whomever is in charge of the music collection!
  13. Got mine today too. Going to listen later tonight. When I started burning the CD into my computer, the first disc was labeled: Nashville Crashville Charlie Brown! Tennessee Jed was labeled Tennessee Fred, and Deal was labeled Deal (Burn your little ears off!) Funny.
  14. ^^^ haha. That made me laugh. I think the dentist is going through a considerable amount of pain right now. Just Deserts. I'm a meat eater, so I obviously sanction and support the cruel industry of harvesting animals for my consumption: chicken, beef, pork, fish... I don't hunt, but I don't have a problem with people hunting deer or other animals that they're going to eat. Killing a Lion, though... Or a rhino, or an elephant... (I don't know where I draw the line, or how to define the ethics I use to draw it, other than having some vague idea of the notion of a "magnificent beast") i
  15. I will definitely check out Garcia and Ace, and Blues for Allah. One from the Vault is one of my favorites, so it will be interesting to hear the studio versions.
  16. BT MA YHF AGIB AM SW SBS ST (I know I'm in the minority on this one. I've just never liked the sound of this album. It's like a cake with too much gilded frosting.) ... WTA TWL I started with AM. The summer of '95 was all about grilling, frisbee in the street, living like pigs with 5 other guys, and listening to A.M. non stop.
  17. I suppose so. That they got anything at all is nice, since I've read that Price had no intention of staying in Detroit. The Tigers have zero prospects in the Top 100 (according to this list). Norris is #25. So, that's something, I guess. Time will tell. But like I said, to get something at all, for a player that the Tigers weren't going to hold onto, is good.
  18. Price is going to command Scherzer money. We'll see if Toronto is willing to pony up.
  19. Looks like David Price is headed to Toronto.
  20. The only studio albums that I've listened to are Working Man's Dead, American Beauty, and Terrapin Station. I never really go back to their studio output, since the live stuff is where it's at, and unlike pretty much every other band, there's so much out there to get into.
