I dabbled in the Dead many years ago - in the late 80s, saw them twice in successive summers (89 and 90) at Alpine Valley, Wisconsin. It didn't really grab me then, but I think browsing through this thread revived my interest. I'm still put off by Bob Weir, but I do enjoy Garcia's and Lesh's playing. The friends of mine who were deadheads used to give me tapes, but I was never impressed with the audio quality, so that's my biggest apprehension in starting to listen to the older shows. Thanks to everyone who contributed a suggestion - I will start looking into the recommendations slowly.

Wow thanks. Just searched amazon for a few of those. Looks like most are out of my reach. Expensive stuff! It looks like Dick's Pick #8 is my next purchase.
