Tweedy in Westchester loves you 12-6-10
choo-choo-charlie replied to benny's topic in After The Show
Really? The most ridiculous, ever? If you're replying in reference to my comment, it wasn't a complaint - and note that I said "sounded like a great show." I've been to a few Tweedy shows myself and have loved them, even if I've heard some of the same tunes in the setlist. What I wrote is called posing a question - hypothesizing, even - as to how many or what songs would be substituted for two songs running probably 10-12 minutes. It's not the first time someone has said something like this on this board. Relax. -
Was unable to score any.

As much as I love the one-two opener of "Sunken Treasure" and "Remember the Mountain Bed," I wonder how many more tunes could be fit into a setlist if he were to scrap these two rather lengthy songs. Either way, it sounded like a great show. Wish I could make it to DC. -
How very unfair and presumptuous of you to say that I -- or anyone -- was never interested in Mavis Staples prior to Tweedy's work with her this year. That's just ridcidulous. And if you read my post more carefully, you'd realize that my list was my "favorite" recordings of the year -- not necessarily "the best" -- but that which I enjoyed the most. And like others here, Jeff's involvement with Mavis' record this year has little to nothing to do with my interest in and appreciation for her work. To quote someone from the thread about You Are Not Alone, I also enjoyed her recent solo

I can appreciate that. I really dig her "Buckingham Solo" record. Since my father passed away almost three months ago, this particular record has resonated with me because of its songs about life/death, love, memories and hope.

Perhaps a recent separation from a dear companion...from Jay Bennett?

Another good one.

Oh - and Matt Wilson's Christmas Tree-O.

What are the chances the next Wilco album sucks?

Has anyone purchased this? I read about it here and am intrigued, but don't want to drop the coin on anything that doesn't reveal something new - or if they're mediocre recordings. Of course, I don't think Spoon would release something like that...just wondered if anyone has picked it up and can recommend it.

I picked up Mavis' record and Robert Plant's Band of Joy. Thanks for the tip! -
I got into Wilco in 2005, and the records I return to most are A.M. and Being There.

Best full band Remember the Mountain Bed?

The one on Mermaid Avenue, Vol. 2 is pretty good. -
This. And this. And this too. There was this reckless abandon in Lennon's voice on those early recordings that I feel are missing in some of the later stuff. All of their singing really changed over the years - phrasing, inflections in the voice, the melodies they wrote.

Agreed on all points, although I did learn quite a bit by reading Geoff Emerick's book recently.

Sometimes I'm in the same boat - I can listen to A Hard Day's Night from start to finish every time, no problem. Sometimes I find myself skipping a few tracks on Rubber Soul. By "all original songs" do you mean all Lennon/McCartney originals? Rubber Soul is all originals too...but there's a few Harrison tracks and Ringo even gets a credit.

I freakin' love Beatles for Sale. It's a great bridge between the moptop era and the beginnings of mid-period exploration, also where the Dylan influence really starts to shine through. The opening trio of No Reply, I'm a Loser and Baby's in Black is absolutely killer. Also dig I'll Follow the Sun and I Don't Want to Spoil the Party ("Iiiiiiiiii still / looooooooove her"). I'd even put up the single I Feel Fine + She's a Woman against some of their more popular singles.
