Different. The thing that I grapple with above all on JB solo albums is his voice. If I recall correctly, "Whatever" was a solo guitar/voice record, which made it even harder for me to get through. At least here you've got classic JB full-studio work. As a backup/harmony vocalist, I think he was terrific. As a lead vocalist, I think his chops were over-matched by his instrumental and production skills - but he was a tremendous artist nonetheless. Give it a try!

It very well could be a joke. Taking a jab at two Wilco albums that he wasn't a part of seems like a good way to frame up a review.

I was wondering if Pitchfork - or any media outlet, for that matter - could review the album without making a Wilco reference, but I knew that wouldn't be possible. However, I'm not sure about the assertion that Bennett was "kicked out of Wilco for being too conservative."

This e-mail brought a smile to my face because of the new Mavis Staples song, which gets me excited about hearing the whole record, and because Wilco's probably got some cool stuff up their sleeve with the label situation and a new record in the works. Like many bands, Wilco puts out a new record every 2-3 years, so with the time it takes to write, record, mix and master, they're on path to stay in that pattern.

Sun Kil Moon's new record, Admiral Fell Promises, is streaming in full over at their MySpace page. It's excellent.
