  1. What everyone else said...plus listen to the first UT album, No Depression. The old Farrar/Tweedy duet at the end of the disc...
  2. Heard the album cut of "I'm the Man Who Loves You" on 103.1 WRNR (Annapolis) and had to drive around the block a few times to finish out the song, since I rarely hear our boys on the airwaves.
  3. Just as I was about to ask what version of YHF you were listening to when "Heavy Metal Drummer" comes after "Poor Places," I realized you were talking about "Reservations." Reading the thread title and your comment threw me off for just a moment. That is all.
  4. Well, who knows why, but I'm going to avoid getting into a debate about the merits (or not?) of a band using social media platforms. Who freakin' cares...
  5. They're on Facebook too. What's wrong with a band being on Twitter?
  6. Agreed, although I think this song would sound better on an Autumn Defense record.
  7. I haven't really paid attention or noticed this, but I don't have any hatred for HMD. 'tis one of my favorites.
  8. My wife and I were at that show. We were driving in the rain and thought "oh sh*t" to ourselves, considering we were in from Kansas City to see the show (and hang out at the family cabin) and didn't want it to get canceled. But like you said - it turned out to be an incredible night!!!
  9. While I still can't resist the raw simplicity of The Big Come Up, I applauded The Black Keys for spreading their wings a bit more on the last few records. All of their stuff is solid, but I began to lose interest after the third or fourth record, not as a result of disliking the music (even though it began to move in a different direction) - I was just more occupied with other bands. Brothers has brought me back into the game.
  10. Back in 2006, Wilco was playing the Uptown Theatre in Kansas City, MO. My wife (girlfriend at the time) and I were going that evening, but had to run some errands during the day. While heading back to her parents' house to drop some stuff off and get ready for the show, we saw Glenn Kotche standing on a street corner on the edge of the Plaza in Kansas City. This was a few hours before the show, so I imagine he was getting ready to head to the venue for soundcheck or something. I also thought it was weird that he was by himself trying to hail a cab - not in a van w/the other members. Most
  11. Just PM the person who posted the link, as they instructed, and they'll probably hook you up.
  12. Also one of my favorites! And "Shakin' Sugar," or "Alone."
  13. Just listened to "Mirror Ball." I dig it. I feel Jay's voice is best when absorbed in small doses, but it sounds a little better here than past recordings.
  14. Although lyrically there's plenty of downtrodden subject matter, the crushing and anthemic (for lack of a better word) sound of Boys and Girls in America and Stay Positive by The Hold Steady make me want to pump my fist in the air and lift my spirits up.
  15. A stunningly beautiful woman, a phenomenal vocalist, and one of the best all-around performers from the era. I'm going to have to spin an old LP of hers that I got from my wife's grandmother's unwanted collection.
  16. A hi-hat is a cymbal on a drum set, often embellished with other percussive elements, as seen here:
  17. YES! I actually never noticed this until about two weeks ago when I had A.M. on in the car really, really loud.
  18. Lloyd Maines' pedal steel work on A.M. (whatever happened to that guy?) as well as Brian Henneman's guitar fills. Right after "...still be your friend" in "Box Full of Letters" there's a short, descending slide guitar pattern that gets me every time. The drone of the Dash 7 airplane at the end of "Dash 7." The way the drums kick in at the beginning of "Too Far Apart," sounding like an extension of "Blue Eyed Soul," as if the latter had a fake ending or they were just one long jam... OH - and the Moby Grape cover "I Am Not Willing" on the A.M. demos. There's some great organ fills and wha
  19. I remember in another YHF thread someone made a joke that Reprise was accidentally sent The Conet Project instead of YHF. Reprise, thinking that the former was actually the latter, was appalled and asked Wilco to make a more "radio-friendly" record, starting the chain of events that eventually lead to Wilco's departure from the label. Wouldn't that be funny?
  20. Verlaine / Lloyd Lennon / Harrison McCready / Gossard
  21. I'll say what I said the first time I saw someone bring these guys up: I am distracted by the singer's man-boobs too much. Funky sound though!
  22. In my opinion, Jay was a fine pianist who actually had a little bit of his own voice. I love, love, love the live recording of he and Jeff from November 1996 - the C'est What. I actually prefer his piano licks to a lot of the big, swelling, overdone keyboards and organs. Ok, just some.
  23. It's a terrific song. Love hearing it in the Wilco live recordings from about 1997-1999.
  24. Wow. What an opening three! Am still dying to hear the current lineup play the Being There arrangement of "Sunken Treasure" live. And what an end! Always great to hear Red-Eyed & Blue >> I Got You (am lucky to have heard it myself once back in 2007). And "Kicking Television," the Buffalo Springfield tune, Big Star covers, and then the "Late Greats" and "I'm a Wheel" combo to end it. That's phenomenal.
