I'd just like to preface this by noting that I was recently chatised for chastising someone for posting a new topic instead of contributing to an established thread, and I am fully prepared to eat my words here if this has already been done. A quick search turned up a discussion about Being There, disc 1 vs. disc 2; but it didn't turn up any results on my proposed topic. SO - anyway - like some of you who in the aforementioned thread who refused to vote because Being There should be digested as a whole, I agree because I love the whole thing. But if you absolutely HAD to condense Being The

I had a near-miss with Glenn once. When Wilco played Kansas City in March 2006, my then-girlfriend-now-wife and I were running some errands the day of the show and spotted Glenn standing on a street corner a few hours before the show, clearly looking for a cab or trying to get his bearings. "Holy sh*t that's Glenn Kotche!" I said. "Oh let's stop and say hi! Or maybe see if he needs a lift somewhere?" my companion said. "Nah. He might be creeped out" I said. And then we drove on. An hour later, I was kicking myself for not stopping to at least say hi and wishing him good luck o

That's why I like it too. Listen closely when they sing "misconstrued." It's off just enough to get the point across...

I think SpeedRacer was a tad shocked at the question posed in the thread...

Alright, alright, alright...I'm sorry. Didn't mean to be rude. But for the record, it's not like this is the first time that someone's been hammered for not going "by the book" on this board...I've seen plenty of folks skewered for it. BUT - it doesn't make it right by doing it to someone else. I promise to be more nice.

Ah...I've never heard anyone refer to a self-titled album as S/T. Yes, I know their albums and have them all...this one is particularly good.
-
I too enjoy the Autumn Defense, but my question still hasn't been answered. Forgive my being dense, but what is S/T album?
-
what album?

****************** "One main difference on this current tour in support of, er, Wilco (The Album) is that the sextet isn't serving up lengthy, adventurous tunes like the 10-minute Spiders (Kidsmoke). Rather, there is a bevy of shorter, crisper tunes such as I Am Trying To Break Your Heart, Either Way and I'll Fight." ...and in what universe is a six-minute-plus song considered short and crisp?

I too thought this was Rickenbacker when I first saw it, but thanks to the lovely people on this board, I realized that the guitar Tweedy plays on "Walken" is a Gibson Barney Kessel model. Cheers.

Good point. When I first discovered Wilco, only a mere five or six years ago, the first albums I dove into were Being There and Summerteeth - albums, as Jeff Tweedy has pointed out in interviews, were written from a perspective of a guy who was unsure about his life, and perhaps a bit scared at what was to come. At the time when I heard these albums, I found myself in a similar mindset; I was almost out of college, uncertain about what I wanted to do, feeling unprepared for the next step, unable to communicate any of my feelings to well, and generally panicked about the future - a feeling

Go back and listen to the free 930 show that came w/the Ashes DVD. There's some stage banter in there about "looking back at old setlists and working in some songs we haven't played in DC." Then they launch into "Someday Soon." Look at THAT setlist - six from Summerteeth? three from A.M.? I know a lot of people here are tired of Walken (and Hate it Here) - but the version from that show kills.

What's the consensus on Wilco (The Album)?
choo-choo-charlie replied to Shining Sunbeam's topic in Just A Fan
In Rainbows has some good bits, but to me, the story of the sales/marketing strategy behind it overshadowed the music in some areas... ****** Exactly. "Experimental" doesn't mean "trying adventerous things in the studio" to a lot of people so much as it means, "Dude, that sounds kinda like Kid A!" ****** Agreed. I am tired of revisiting the "experimental" concept/definition/clarification over and over again. I've just accepted that people have already made up their minds on what "experimental" means to them and that's that... -
There's no way CC Deville could ever be compared to Slash. Hilarious, though!

Dad rock. Just kidding.

I started my older brother off with full copies of A.M., Being There, and the Mermaid Avenue releases, since his tastes lean towards the country-folk-rock stylings. He ate those up, so then I gave him some samples of Summerteeth and YHF, to "ease" him into the changing sounds. Then it was K.T. and Ashes, which he really loved. So then, the other day, he goes on Lala and checks out AGIB for himself. He enjoyed some of it, and noted, that in his opinion, the live versions were better. Then he gets to "Less Than You Think," and as we're chatting on gmail, he says, "hmm...this is kind of a

Naming my band "World Record Players"
choo-choo-charlie replied to wagx3's topic in Someone Else's Song
I had actually thought about giving the same name to band, and am glad that someone else brought up the topic first. I agree that "Left Arm Tan" is better, now that I think about it. -
I'm curious about other versions of the Red Rocks recording. I have one [many appreciative thank you's to the VC'er who sent me a copy] and it's a great reminder of one of the best shows I attended, but the sound quality in my opinion is ok - yet I've heard so many people praise it here...

Rubber Soul.

What defines "obscure" in this context? Most of these tracks mentioned are on albums...they might be deep cuts, but I don't know if I'd consider them to be "obscure." Some of the singles mentioned, like "The Inner Light," might be a bit more obscure...
-
Well, I'm only starting to dip into this band and these recordings, and was about to put up a fresh post about it, but the search function quickly revealed to me that this has already been discussed. At any rate, I've also learned that they're going to be playing in the College Park, MD area and was going to check them out - any others in the area that would want to go?
