My 7 year old Daughter's request for Santa Barbara Tweedy show

Nothing up my Sleeve is an outtake from YHF. A Long Time Ago is a Tweedy contribution to the Golden Smog record "Another Fine Day." -

As I said earlier this crowd was so much better than Kansas City, but I had to share a few stories about one knucklehead we listened to for most of the show. There was a guy sitting behind my wife and I who must have wanted to make sure everyone around him knew how much he knows about Wilco...except about 90% of the tidbits of info he was telling his buddy was pure crap. He had to tell a story to his friend at the beginning of every song about that song's origin and/or meaning. My favorite, as Tweedy picked the opening notes to Please Tell My Brothers, was "oh, this is the song he wrote -

It was terrific - and I agree that Jeff's voice really is in top shape right now. Highlights for me were One Sunday Morning, Ashes (my request), Box Full of Letters (my wife's request) and its hilarious ending when he mocked the rock guitar solo, and Nothing Up My Sleeve. This crowd was much better than KC on Tuesday. Generally quiet during all the songs, keeping wahoos to a minimum and using the time in between songs to engage in banter with Tweedy. You could tell Jeff was really enjoying himself. Smiled a lot, even seemed to be beaming at some points. He said Pecan Pie was the most req -

Lucky you! There were at least a half dozen people around us who literally were using their phones during every song. One woman was using the flash on her camera phone in the second row and you could tell it was irritating Jeff, but ever the consummate performer, he just maintained a humorous rapport. The comedian was actually pretty funny! He did his gig for about 45 minutes and changeover into Tweedy was about 15-20 minutes. Jeff didn't have the half-circle of guitars this time. Kept them all offstage and he'd swap them out with the tech as needed. He just had a table with some extra pick -

Hoping the crowd didn't sour his feelings toward KC for future shows, solo or with the band. Wilco played the same venue two years ago to the date and put on an awesome show, and it was clear the band was enjoying it. They also played KC at the Crossroads in 2007 and 2009, so they seem to make a stop here whenever they're out supporting a new record. For the guitar players -- Tweedy put a new spin on IATTBYH and played some funky bended notes and other little licks that I hadn't heard him do before. Really spiced the tune up. The crowd was so rowdy during Acuff-Rose that he ended up walk -

My wife and I sat in the fourth row on the floor. Really close and terrific view. There were A LOT of people on their phones around us, either texting or shooting photos/videos. It was really distracting. I was waiting for Jeff to address those people but it never happened...maybe he's given up that battle. And there were a couple of really drunk people who got up and changed seats every few songs. They probably spent more time gettin up and walking across the row - making everyone in that row stand up so they could get by - than they did sitting and listening. So I was definitely disappoin -

Yeah. The in-song clapping by that guy wasn't on rhythm or anything. Totally at random and extremely obnoxious. Tweedy also likened it to a shoe in the dryer and asked him to sit on his hands. -

There was a jerk in the front row yelling requests, obscenities and absurdities after every song. He repeatedly asked Jeff to play a tribute to Jay Bennett and was yelling for "Secrets of the Sea." That's when Tweedy said "I don't think you know how a tribute works. I've got a whole list of songs here and there's not a tribute in the lot of them." And the guy fired back at Tweedy about the tribute again and challenged Tweedy's relationship with JB, which then caused the comment mentioned above. Not gonna lie, it actually brought a little tear to my eye when he said "Jay Bennett was my frien -

I was there and will share some thoughts later today when I have some free time. That song linked above is "Long Time Ago," Tweedy's contribution to the 2006 Golden Smog record "Another Fine Day" and my request for the night! -
Ok, so who's getting antsy for tonight??? This will be my third Tweedy solo show. Haven't seen him solo since 2008. Looking forward to an evening of great music. And them off to Denver for the show Thursday night!

I knew Tim Finn personally from my days working in the arts/music community in KC. His work overall is very first-rate and he's very much snark-free.- 8 replies

I think his banter has a lot to do with the fact that he's still not always comfortable mixing it up with people and still has some social anxiety to some degree. The funny one-liners are almost a way to deal with an uncomfortable situation, that is, having to talk and interact with people rather than just perform.

I'll be at KC and Denver. I put in a request for "Long Time Ago." Something about that song's lyrics and this season makes me all warm 'n fuzz 'n nostalgic.

I second the comments about trying to find some joy in it even if you're not religious or "on board" with the season in general, as hard as that may be. Take in the simple pleasure of a day off and treat yourself. It's not always easy, but making small changes in one's attitude can make a big difference.

I love this season. Many of the previous comments perfectly encapsulate why. We try to put a lot of thought into how we celebrate and make it meaningful every year, and usually succeed! When it comes to gifts, I don't thikn I've ever bought any family members a Christmas gift that falls under the description of "stuff that won't be used." My brothers and I usually just give each other bottles of scotch and some music. I'm great with that. The wives/sisters-in-law all get fun girly stuff for each other. And we all pitch in for something for my mom. On my wife's side, the siblings do a na

Last minute advice regarding the Roadcase shows!
choo-choo-charlie replied to chriscolbert's topic in Just A Fan
These are the shows I have: 6-23-2012: Red Rocks 7-25-2012: Terminal 5, NY9-23-2102: Reno6-22-2013: Solid Sound (not the covers set)10-11-2013: Austin (just bought this morning...thanks Grey Thursday discount!)My favorites are probably Red Rocks and Solid Sound. This Austin show has a great setlist, though I'm only about a quarter way through the show and the guys actually sound a little tired on a few tunes. -
Said this in the After the Show thread and I'll say it again here: This song still sounds good today, but I don't think it's played with the same energy and spirit as seen here. In this video, Tweedy wasn't that far removed from the migraines and addiction that fueled the manic guitar playing on AGIB. It's absolutely gut-wrenching and soulful. When I hear this at a modern-day Wilco show, it's performed very well and still rocks, but it sounds like a tune that's been performed hundreds of times and doesn't have the freshness that you see here.

Maybe my favorite record from that entire era/scene. A bunch of guys get together to record a couple of songs in honor of their fallen friend, and the jam session turns into a one-off record. Classic.
