  1. Fair enough. Like someone else said, I can understand it. I guess I just don't understand the surprise of it. Every Wilco show I've seen has had just the right amount of it, and nothing at the level where I'd say every song had it and 30+ minutes could've been trimmed from the show.
  2. Blasted it in the car this morning. Great 60's-sounding organ in there that I can hear through the speakers in the car.
  3. I don't think I'd ever put the word "sleazily" in a sentence describing "Open Mind."
  4. So you own six out their eight studio records (not counting Mermaid Avenue as straight-up WILCO albums; Anodyne is Uncle Tupelo) including the ones that hinted at the noise and the one that really introduced the noise into their songs -- yet you're still surprised?
  5. Was just flipping channels and stopped on the news. They were running a special broadcast on it. He was 56. Lost the battle to pancreatic cancer.
  6. Poor Places' coda and the beginning of IATTBYH are good examples of some good Wilco noise. The following songs do not have 30-90 seconds of said noise: One Sunday Morning I Might One Wing Rising Red Lung Impossible Germany Shouldn't Be Ashamed New Madrid Standing O Jesus, Etc Born Alone War on War Dawned on Me Via Chicago Whole Love I Love My Label HMD ITMWLY Casino Queen Outtasite
  7. Fair enough! I'll agree with you that the first four are pretty special. Those records were what brought me into the fold in the first place. I appreciate the humor that's regularly exhibited on the blog and the personal tone with which everything is written. Far more interesting than the masturbatory, self-indulgent writing you find on a lot of other blogs.
  8. I doubt 30 minutes could've been trimmed with the elimination or reduction of the noise-feedback codas to songs. Besides, they're integral to Wilco's sound. I'd never go to a Wilco concert and expect not to hear that stuff.
  9. Klosterman's seventh book, "The Visible Man," came out yesterday. He mentions Wilco in the interview with CNN. CNN: Do you think your opinion of interviewing will erode to the point where you no longer interview people or get interviewed? Klosterman: What else would I do? I mean, I'm a journalist. There's certainly a thinking, and I didn't see this as much when I worked in newspapers, but when I moved to New York and ended up being surrounded mostly by critics, I came to the realization that a lot of people sort of work under the impression that not only is interviewing not helpful, but th
  10. I mean you no harm. Just a little friendly ribbing.
  11. Minus the kids, I know what you mean. I do have other "kids" now, though. I'm wondering: from what I recall being a former regular at Captain's Dead, you're a big fan of the BT-ST-YHF run, particularly ST and live recordings from the era. I think one can draw several comparisons between ST and TWL in terms of both being pop records with a little noise thrown in there, but otherwise tight songs with good arrangements and layers of sound. Other than "Art of Almost," what else on TWL do you consider to be art-rock? Just wondering. I respect and understand your viewpoint on the blog, but think
  12. OF COURSE it's you. I might have dropped off when you went on one of your hiatuses. Maybe I'll saunter on over there right now...
  13. I haven't been to Captain's Dead in a long time. It's a great blog. I used to have it in my RSS -- he shares so many great shows over there, a lot of Wilco/UT and a ton of other artists. Some good Springsteen recordings if I recall. Just got too busy to keep up with it over there. The first batch of Wilco bootlegs I owned all came from there. Anyway -- thanks for sharing.
  14. You mean a stream of the same set had the same setlist both times you watched it?
  15. I FINALLY got around to spinning my LP last night. While I enjoyed the extra two minutes of "One Sunday Morning," I didn't feel it was essential or that it added any extra weight to the song. Just a few more minutes of some good folky jamming. And having "Sometimes it Happens" follow it was sort of strange. Having "Whole Love" start side 3 was odd too. Minor quibbles aside, the record sure sounds great.
  16. Not that I'm aware of. His mother did several years ago. Musical tribute to her came in the form of "On and On and On."
  17. Wow, SarahC. That's unbelievable. UNBELIEVABLE.
