  1. OMG, I missed it!!! And you're my favorite!!! Hope you had a lovely day, and I hope it's a lovely year for you, too.
  2. Ouch! We're at 60ish currently, supposed to be a high of about 75 today. Perfect weather, if you ask me, so sorry to all you folks sweltering out there!
  3. I'm less enamored of Tim O'Brien's later books, but The Things They Carried and Going After Cacciato are two of my all-time faves.
  4. Thanks, sweetie! I just figure I'm speaking for the multitudes here.
  5. Those were exactly his problems with it. They have pretty much everything they need, he doesn't want to register for fine china that they'll never use, etc. Along the lines of the theater subscription, I got some friends of mine a gift certificate for a day at a spa about an hour's drive from here. So they could drive up, do the mud bath/massage thing, have a nice dinner, and drive home, or make an overnight trip out of it. Another gift that's not a tangible thing, but a nice experience for them.
  6. Oh, I am such a pain in the ass... Mart, I think they won't unzip because there are spaces in the file names. I think that's what winzip is telling me about the new version, anyway (for what it's worth, the old version wouldn't unzip with winrar ).
  7. Yeah, couples' gifts can be really hard. Also, my newly-engaged cousin was just bitching to us yesterday about the whole concept of the registry. He doesn't think they "need" anything that they might be putting on there, but we told him it's useful for the less-imaginative gift-givers among us. So: I have nothing substantive to add, but I think the tickets would be a killer gift.
  8. We saw $4.55 in Pacifica (just down the coast) today. So much for over $3.00, over $4.00, it'll be over $5.00 any day now.
  9. Mart! I'm getting an error message when I try to unzip these (tried the download twice, same thing both times). Any chance of a re-zip/re-up?
  10. If you look at someone else's profile, you should be able to rate them. Just click on one of the stars, and it'll add a rating to that person's profile. It doesn't really mean anything, I know there was a running joke where people were one-starring each other for a while, but that's about it.
  11. B, that looks great! Ooh, Leonard Marcus sure has carved out a sweet little niche for himself, hasn't he?
  12. I posted this previously. It's supposed to be 5 stages. Probably the same as HSBG, minus the Porch Stage, plus a huge-ass stage at the Polo Fields (check the map of GG Park for that one).

  14. There's a camera shop in San Francisco called "Adolph Gasser". Opened in 1950. What was that guy thinking? OK, so fine, it was his name, but he couldn't have gone with "Golden Gate Camera" or something?
  15. I have no actual information on this, but it smells fishy to me. This supposedly happened a month before Obama's keynote address at the Democratic Convention? It seems really unlikely to me that Michelle Obama would be unaware of what statements like that might mean for her husband's future career in politics.
  16. OK folks, time for a new one?
  17. I'm jealous. There was a group working on a bid for SF, but it never got anywhere.
  18. It's like they were right there! (They did in fact play that song during a break in the game...) And my brother-in-law actually asked "How come Irish Night is always on a Monday? Japanese Night is on a Friday!" He was told by my sister that "We've done nothing to show that we can handle a Friday night..." We had loads of fun, Mart, thanks. The actual "game" part of going to the game is usually secondary for me so it was good that we got one that even I could enjoy.
  19. Have fun, Mart! You know I wish I could be there!
  20. Where's Mart? It's time for my annual trip to the ballpark ("Irish Night"), and it's the Giants vs. the Mets. It's on!
  21. Yeah, it's a huge political hot-potato.
  22. I'd be pretty damned happy with that, if I were you. We almost never go to the park. It's a disgrace, really. I love that it's there, but we don't take nearly enough advantage of it.
  23. We have a biggish yard (for the city) that was mostly lawn, and required mowing and watering beyond what was sensible, way out of proportion to the amount of time we spend romping out there. The kids like it for soccer and playing catch when they come over, but considering that we live two blocks from Golden Gate Park, it's crazy to keep it in shape for their occasional visits when we could just walk down the street and hang out on the city's lawn. So, we're letting the grass go, and I'm reading up on vegetable gardening (organic, hopefully) in our neck of the woods. We're probably just go
