The Minutemen Appreciation Thread
tinnitus photography replied to MrRain422's topic in Someone Else's Song
Watt and Hurley are gonna be doing Minutemen songs @ the ATP that Jeff Mangum is curating in Dec, in the UK. -
someone's paying. that's the point. it's not like a one-off 'free' gig from a guy who sings like a hiccuping monkey suddenly qualifies him as philanthropist of the year. look, i'm really sorry that you can't go see Neil, you can't sit in the luxury boxes for this weekend's Final 4, and you won't be having Wolfgang Puck cater your summer cookouts. sometimes life is unfair.
-
actually, for all those NYC shows the bands get paid...i saw Sonic Youth for free last year in Brooklyn, and they didn't do it out of their own good will. same goes w/ the free shows @ Summerstage and the Brooklyn pool shows. but hey, if you wanna take the 'win,' feel free to stock on those internet points. sounds like you need them.

Can is an amazing band. Jaki is an incredible drummer, one of the best. other bands I dig that i don't think were mentioned include Ash Ra Tempel, Brainticket, German Oak, and Harmonia.
-
yeah, that's ok. you can think what you want. when did i deny that DMB had a good tour draw? you cited a one-off free show 8 years ago. good for you. the other example was flimsy at best. this argument is going nowhere. you think Neil's a greedy arsewipe, and i feel he can charge what he wants to.
-
the bands get paid, the city or state just picks up the tab. DMB=living hell. no way i'd ever willingly subject myself to stand within earshot of them. you couldn't pay me. well, maybe i'd take a trade for a NY ticket.
-
having to listen to DMB isn't something I would consider free of any sort of burden, financial or otherwise.
-
well, nobody would. yeah, definitely an April 1st thing, but the kernels of truth are in there. at least from my perspective.
-
i'm sure that the April 1st date has a strong correlation to this, but it's almost plausible. i will say that the audiences in 07 and 09 were much better behaved than the '02 shows i saw. http://neilyoungnews.thrasherswheat.org/2011/04/free-neil-young-warmup-concerts.html

as a fellow photographer, i'll toss my thoughts into the ring... lovely photo, Joshua. the debate about watermarks will rage endlessly, and ultimately it's the creator who holds the decision. i have recently changed my position, from using nothing to now what really just constitutes a logo/brand that occupies a corner. of course, that is susceptible to cropping out, but i guess i am ok w/ the balance of asserting copyright but not tampering too much w/ the image. everyone makes their own decisions. josh, i am surprised to hear that NBC used a photo and didn't compensate you...what are the -
punk rock still lives...and it's living pretty well, actually. for those who don't know, OFF! is Keith Morris' new band (ex-Black Flag/Circle Jerks). not the typical listening fare for this board, but i bet there's at least a few people w/ early Black Flag or Circle Jerks records in their collection. photos and review: http://www.prefixmag.com/photos/off-trash-talk-cerebral-ballzy-the-middle-east-cam/

i would think after the aneurysm and Ben Keith's passing, Neil doesn't take anything for granted...

that's actually still true today.

some people prefer vinyl for the artwork, for the sound, or just for the ritual of playing it as compared to a CD. I've certainly bought reissue LPs of stuff that i didn't previously have, or that I did have on CD or CDR. i won't really go out of my way for a color vinyl pressing of a record I've already got, but if it's a new release, i don't mind getting a rarer edition of a color pressing as compared to the black.

do people really run into douchey record store workers all the time? maybe Boston is different, but i really can't think of any over the 20+ years i've been shopping here. some cool band members were store workers that i saw a lot of over the years: mack mackay (slapshot drummer) richie parsons (unnatural axe) bob fay (sebadoh) yukki gipe (bullet lavolta) peter prescott (volcano suns/burma) robin amos (girls/cul de sac) wayne rogers (major stars) keith fullerton whitman (solo) i'm sure there were others i'm forgetting.

what's a good seat to an NFL game cost?

I guess seeing OFF! last night could qualify for nostalgia, but they kicked ass.
-
i can tell you that Warners has consistently refused to do any press buy-outs for review tickets over the last few tours.
-
not sure where you are, but i just checked the two Boston dates and the best single ticket I could find was 30 rows from the stage. not sure of your definition, but amazing wouldn't be my first adjective used.
