just got back from dinner to find out about this fucking horrible event. truly gutted; Jack was a phenomenal guitar player, and truly a nice a guy as well. i feel fortunate to have met him a bunch of times, but am really sad that i won't hear him play ever again.

i finally got around to watching the copy i bought on Record Store Day (yeah, i have a bit of a backlog...) anyway, I really enjoyed it. i thought that Canty's camera work and angles worked well, the sound was great, and the versions/songs they did were uniformly excellent (though i guess i could have done w/o the "kingpin" raveup). they didn't do all that much off-stage/interview stuff, but there was enough of it for me. the pacing was good too and the opening soundcheck scene was brilliant. glad to see 'theologians' tacked onto the extras. love that song.

super jealous. i never saw Big Black either. i've seen Shellac a couple of times, and i *will* play poker against Albini @ the next ATP (assuming that Shellac gets invited again, which seems to be a pretty safe bet).

Matador does sell FLAC files. i'm sure other labels will catch on to that as well.

never leave a Calexico gig early...they typically invite the opener on stage for a big blowout of a cover song. w/ the Acorn they played 'crosseyed and painless' and it ruled. i do agree that the last couple of records have not been too strong.

buying mp3s is a concept i will never get.

i saw this news the other day...damn. Ronnie still has the most amazing voice, hard to believe he can sing that way at 67. i hope for a full recovery. the last Heaven and Hell show i saw was really good.

funny, i didn't realize that Andy was doing sound for The Feelies. he's a member on a long-time listserv mailing list that i've been on for quite some time as well. it was kinda neat to get a technical insight into this sort of situation. i was wondering about that...i thought the mogwai sound was pretty decent, though i went back from the front of the stage to about ~15' back for the latter third, and the sound improved substantially. louieb, thanks for the info on Neko...i don't own any of the early material, but have a recording of that Peel session she did w/ Calexico.

i had an Ipswich IPA on cask last night.

my comment was tongue-in-cheek, since this *is* a board ostensibly based around Wilco, which at the heart of their music is that same sort of band. and also riffing on that previous thread re: telling people what to like.

there are way too many singer-songwriter types on these lists...

i think the quieter shows sound better there...Will Oldham sounded great, but then again i was about 15' from the stage, center. which is where i ended up at the end of the SY show, for 'what we know' and 'death valley '69' both of which i thought sounded great from there. but at the beginning, i was way over on Lee's side, and it sounded rough; way too much bass and no vocal mix.

for me, the idea of bjork is more compelling than the actual thing.

i prefer the b000 version, but the 30 songs version of 'echoes myron' is a lot better than the b000 one.
