  1. i saw him last November where he played a bunch of songs w/ Bill, then had a band for the 2nd part of the show. http://forums.viachicago.org/topic/42309-ray-davies-berklee-boston-november-17-2009/page__view__findpost__p__1383523__hl__davies__fromsearch__1
  2. 'guitarist' and 'tasty licks' in the same sentence gives me ebola.
  3. definitely get _Arthur_ and _Something Else_, and also _Lola_ and _Muswell Hillbillies_. that era of the Kinks is unassailable!
  4. while doing a search i stumbled onto the fact that a lot of back issues of Spin are available for free online. here's the Wilco cover issue: http://books.google.com/books?id=xGaz0_gZPzIC&printsec=frontcover&rview=1#v=onepage&q=&f=false
  5. not sure about chart placement, but i definitely heard 'i've seen all good people' and 'starship trooper' plenty of times on classic rock radio. 'yours is no disgrace' as well. btw, i put up a thread w/ some photos and a review of their boston show if you hadn't seen it: http://forums.viachicago.org/topic/43102-yes-in-boston-09feb10/
  6. what Green Day song shows a Stooges influence? now if you said Buzzcocks, or even Hüsker Dü i would totally agree. i just don't see the Stooges influence, though admittedly i only know Green Day from radio play.
  7. my feelings are totally un-mixed. i think it's an absolute joke. no dis on Green Day, who are good at what they do, but couldn't they find someone else, someone who was obviously influenced by the Stooges? in a perfect world, someone like Mark Arm (Mudhoney), Pete Kember (aka Sonic Boom), Deniz Tek (Radio Birdman) or the like would be the choice.
  8. i believe that atrocity can be pinned on Cher
  9. aside from Joe Cocker, pretty good opening slots. hopefully i will cover one of the Boston shows.
  10. i saw Wilco 1st in 2002 (i think) @ the Orpheum, and then also at and i'm hoping to see those two shows as well.
  11. well when you compare something like "south side of the sky" or "heart of the sunrise" to OOALH, i think it's pretty obvious which is worse.
  12. awesome avatar, btw. i saw Jandek a few years ago and wished that he had played a different set (or shorter). still like some of his records quite a bit though. this question is impossible for me to answer, as i likely have far too many to list (and that's not a knock on Wilco, who I think are a great band, I just have loads of bands I enjoy mightily).
  13. despite the absence of Jon Anderson, it was a pretty good show http://playgroundboston.com/2010/02/15/yesreview
  14. i despise that song. good long songs: Boris - 'Feedbacker' (pts 1 through 5 really constitute a ~45 min song) Sleep - 'Dopesmoker' (52 minutes of stoner heaven) Velvet Underground - 'Sister Ray' (probably the earliest example of extreme minimalism and primal energy in the long format)
  15. i've still got a ton of old Ajax mail order catalogs in my attic somewhere. when one of those arrived in the mail, my hands would tremble with anticipation.
  16. AM is the only vinyl reissue I don't have, but i couldn't be happier w/ the other pressings.
  17. i only saw the Cows once, but it's a show i will never forgot. Shannon was a great frontman. yeah, the 2 Squirrel Bait records slay. see if you can find the Motorolla Cloudburst 7", which was put out by The Pope, a mag run by Tim Adams before he started Ajax. it was SB in disguise.
  18. O'Rourke's involvement has probably garnered a bit of minor interest. no one cares about Grubbs.
  19. The Melvins are headlining. in a perfect world
  20. you couldn't pay me to go to bonnaroo or coachella. i'm too old and crotchety to stand around in 3rd world conditions for a weekend and pay a fvckload to do so. most of the bands i am interested in i've already seen.
  21. yeah i dig their first cd quite a bit. never did see them play.
  22. i am shooting the Boston show tmrw night.
  23. not a Beatles song, but i couldn't find a 'what song would you like Wilco to cover' so i tagged on to this thread...driving home today, i was struck by the notion that "I'm One" from The Who would be an inspired choice of a cover for Wilco to tackle. Not sure about Pete's vocal range vis a vis Jeff's but I bet they could find a way to make it work.
  24. i would highly doubt that Young is gonna be w/ the band in any capacity. didn't he pull a gun on at least one of the members at one time? i only saw the band w/ Gary on drums (and that was really early, pre-S&E) so i'd like to see them on this go-around.
