    You And I

Wow, I never thought I'd see someone suggest that "Losing End" was a better song than "Cinnamon Girl." It gets my vote too, though.
  2. Outstanding. I loved "I hope I didn't get any genius on you."
  3. I don't care what they do. The band's instincts have been pretty much spot on so far. For me. Jeff Tweedy is my favorite musician; I trust his creative impulses more than anyone else's out there. If I could chart the band's next career move, I think I'd have to pass. Why would I substitute my amateur's judgment for those who have proven time and again they're experts in making great music? If their next step is a disappointment to me, I'll look just as forward to the one that comes after that. I suspect the band has worked damned hard to inspire the loyalty you can see on this site. Th
  4. What the heck does "You Are My Face" mean, anyway? Either the title or the lyrics? SBS is one of my favorite albums, Wilco or otherwise. It's been good to see it getting some love on this site lately. For a while it seemed to be a badge of honor among Wilco fans that they had to dismiss this album out of hand. Which made the OP's premise kind of a surprise to me -- I've NEVER had to look too far to find a discouraging word about this album. The OP's revolutionary opening comments are actually pretty old hat. (TA) is a bunch of excellent tunes to me, but it's not an excellent album. I
  5. I should keep my mouth shut, because until today I had no idea who The Hold Steady were. But after checking the samplers on Amazon of the album in question -- it sure sounds like the guy is doing Springsteen. Specifically early "The Wild the Innocent and the E Street Shuffle" Springsteen. Except for the couple songs where they are clearly doing Thin Lizzy. BUT...I love that era Springsteen, and Iowan mentioned this album in a Wilco thread. So I'm going to check it out. People who make up their minds based upon Amazon sound bites are...um, not too smart.
  6. Yikes. I developed a minor interest in "I Hope..." because my daughter was attending some preview for it, and I'd never heard of the book or the movie. I picked up the book and almost plowed through...haven't quite gone back for those last few pages. Anyway...I'm not easily offended, so I can take or leave all the episodes in the Tucker Max philosophy. But shoe-horning "Either Way" into this crap-fest...THAT offends me. Thanks for the warning.
  7. It's way overstated. Wilco had a couple albums where they seemed kind of interested in the sonic experiments that Radiohead does routinely. That's not a shot at Wilco -- I think they could "do" Radiohead as good as anybody if that's the band they were interested in being. In a way, they're actually more experimental than Radiohead, in that they didn't latch onto that "outre" sound and stick with it album after album. Their albums have been as varied as anybody's, and some of those variations just happen to be pretty conventional. (TA) certainly fits into that mold.
  8. I have to agree with some of these latter comments. I was driving back from a show Friday night, my other concert goers were asleep in the car, and I could listen to whatever I wanted. Time to play W(TA) again, right? I hadn't listened to it in weeks, probably a couple months. So it was going to be an event. Like YHF, AGiB, SBS and BT always are when I haven't heard them in a while. But...although I enjoyed every single song...it wasn't an event at all. Just a good album, not the band I haven't been able to stop listening to for the last few years. I put "Rust Never Sleeps" on after th
  9. I would cry if Jeff hammered one of my posts. And then I would hang it up on my wall.
  10. Well, clearly he's posing, but in a very self-aware, "hey I'm striking a pose" kind of way. I.e., it's humor. Anybody who did this stuff seriously would be lame, but messing around at the rock show is ok with me. As others have suggested, though, a little goes a long way.
  11. Kind of repeating what someone already asked above. But it looks like I won't be anywhere near a radio when this is airing. Do they archive these for later playing anywhere? ************************** {Did some research. Looks like we can listen to old shows here: My link://prairiehome.publicradio.org/programs/ The last show isn't there yet, so it might take a while to get out there.}
  12. I'm glad I didn't offend you, Zuma. It probably would have been more accurate to say I hope you weren't a critic during the period in question. Your article spoke very well though to the fervent devotions that we music fans can fall prey to. And FWIW, I share your obsessions. I own far more Neil Young than any other artist, which is not to say I own even half of his output. The only thing that neutralized my own obsession a little bit over the years was that I was even more single-mindedly devoted to Steely Dan from the mid-70s to the mid-00s. Then I discovered Wilco and, well, neither S
  13. Don't forget that Summerteeth is ridiculously overproduced with many a trite arrangement, Wilco (TS) is a novelty song that should never have gotten close to an album, I'll Fight rips off On and On and On and has many a trite lyric, You & I is just trite....
  14. I never knew what the hell it was. Just felt it was the lamest drawing ever. I had no idea it was even a photograph. It gives me a whole new appreciation for that cover. Thank you for removing one of my rare reservations about Wilco.
  15. Pretty good essay. I hope this guy doesn't make his living writing about music, though. He's not terribly open to different sounds. He reminds me of the John Candy character in "Splash" -- the guy who dropped his coins on the ground so he could look up women's skirts? "When I find something that works I stick with it."
  16. Yeah, it's too obvious to be anything but a homage. At least the verses with the Nels lick. Once you've heard that, the earlier verses call it to mind as well. I wonder if we would have all been noticing a similarity if they hadn't included the explicit repro? I'm always surprised that people don't talk about the opening line of Solitaire more. This harkens back to "Good Vibrations" in my head, and is a whole lot more interesting topic than the Harrison homage to me. Not that I think there is any intent to pilfer here, either...after 100 billion songs, there are going to be some with si
  17. Yeah, that's pretty rough. To be fair to Phil, though, "Ripple" is all about Jerry Garcia's vocals. Phil's dulcet tones shouldn't come anywhere near this song. I'm looking forward to the Wilco/Lesh cover of "Box of Rain," though...
  18. There's no doubt that Ipods and Wilco have made it a whole lot easier to get into a regular exercise routine. When getting up at the crack of dawn to do that walk or run becomes a highlight of your day, that's pretty cool....
  19. Neil Young, Rust Never Sleeps. I can't wait to hear their rendition of Powderfinger.
  20. "Country Disappeared" certainly seems to be one of the more polarizing songs on the album. Lots of people consider it to be one of the highlights -- if not absolute best -- songs on the album. Others can't dismiss it quickly enough. I'm firmly in the former camp. I guess BBN would be the most essential track for me here, but CD is certainly the most beautiful.
  21. This has probably been mentioned before. But I was watching the movie "He's Just Not That Into You" with my wife -- yes, I know, I'm sorry -- and "I Must Be High" was playing during a scene in a bar. Then during the closing credits I forwarded to the songs, to see if they received their just credit. I pretended I was interested in some other song. Yes, I pretended to be normal. Ha ha ha ha ha. Ha.
  22. Real Gone rules. Totally underrated Waits album. The boys aren't into Rain Dogs or Swordfishtrombone? FWIW -- Steely Dan has been my favorite band since the mid 70's. Nobody else ever came close. Until Waits made a run a few years back. Just when he was about to make things interesting, I encountered this other band based in Chicago, and I've listened to little else the last few years. Can barely remember some of those Waits tunes now. Great stuff, though. The running tally is now... Wilco...Steely Dan...Tom Waits...King Crimson...everybody else.
  23. It doesn't have HMD or W(TS) like the other foolish list. So I'm satisfied. Good job!
  24. Very cool, JAK. My family will be amused to learn of this connection between two of my obsessions. The universe is starting to make sense...
  25. My kids think it's hilarious. That I'm as infatuated with this band as they once were Blink-182 and Dave Matthews. I dread the day they hear the term "dad rock." I'll never hear the end of it.
