  1. Great, I'm inspired to go pull out some Clash and turn up the volume.
  2. Hmmm, two people listed Simonon, which got me thinking. The Clash are one of my all-time favorites, but I think of them as a musical unit. When I think of them i always think of Paul, but rarely because of his bass playing. I don't carry his bass lines in my head. Just saying. Not meant to be critical in any way of anyone's choices, just something that interested me.
  3. To go along with the Your Favorite Guitar Players discussion. Emphasis on "favorite." Here's mine, off the top: Phil Lesh Jack Casady Mike Gordon George Porter, Jr. Oteil Burbridge Paul McCartney
  4. Favorites? I like that criteria so much better than "best." In the "without overthinking it" vein, and subject to adjustment when I do: Garcia Jorma (I don't think anyone included Jorma, one of my all time heroes) and the rest in no particular order... Warren Haynes Derek Trucks Trey Clapton Richard Thompson David Hidalgo Nels Tweedy Neil Eric Krasno Peter Buck Bob Weir
  5. Yes, on the Layla album you had the Les Paul and Strat combo. But from what i recall, Duane played only a couple of live shows with the Dominos, and I'm pretty sure Clapton played his Strat throughout. And I'm pretty certain he played his Strat on the tour with Derek Trucks. I think I would have remembered if he played something else. I have both Crossroads dvd's, one of those is the band with Derek I believe, I'll take a look.
  6. Definitely not buying this Gibson v. Strat issue. When did he last play a Gibson, in Cream? He played a Strat (Brownie) on Layla and when he toured Derek and the Dominos, so that puts that argument to rest for me.
  7. I always wish Clapton's guitar strap hadn't broken when he was blazing away with Robbie on Further On Up the Road during the Last Waltz.
  8. No doubt EC's put out some very "blah" songs/albums in his career. But I am equally of no doubt that Layla is one of the greatest albums put out by any artist (or collection of artists) at any time in any genre. I don't think it's damn near perfect, I think it is perfect! To this day, I still find Clapton's guitar playing brilliant. Not just technically proficient, but emotional. He's one of the few who make the guitar speak and sing. I don't see him live that often. The last time I saw him on stage was when he played with the Allman Brothers for the first time ever at the Beacon o
  9. This clip of That's What Love Will Make You Do with Susan Tedeschi is a truer representation of an Allmans show. I know there's a lot of controversy about Susan's appearances on the Allmans forums, but an example like this should put all that to rest in my mind. http://www.glidemagazine.com/hiddentrack/col-bruce-nels-cline-and-susan-tedeschi-among-allman-brothers-band-guests-night-10-of-2013-beacon-theatre-run/
  10. That's 2 years in a row for Nels. He's becoming a regular!
  11. Great to read that. I'm missing the Allmans at the Beacon and Bowlive, but I will be in MSG for both nights of Crossroads and am very psyched.
  12. Today's Pop Market deal is Europe '72, 180 gram, 3 lp release with all the packaging. The listing linked to this video, which I'll share in honor of Phil's birthday today:
  13. LazyLightning55 has a bunch of good Beacon and Bowlive videos posted. As does MarcMillman1 (for Bowlive).
  14. Shug put it perfectly in both his recent posts. (well, maybe I wouldn't say they're *without peer*). They are musical virtuosos with the ability to play a wide range of genres. I love the covers. Keep in mind, they are doing what 10 or 12 shows at the Beacon. Mixing in the covers is a huge plus. Personally, my level of enjoyment with a band is often directly tied to the quality of the songs they pull out to cover. And Warren maybe without peer in that regard, in all of his bands. There's been almost 100 years of great blues, jazz, rock, etc. I don't want that music to not be played, I
  15. Picked up Honky Tonk today. Read some great reviews, but after an initial casual listen I found it pretty boring. Nothing grabbed me. Maybe it's too traditional country for my tastes. I'll give it a proper listen, seeing them in Boston.
  16. Do people really have a problem with them doing Dickey songs? Not me. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hqPXCpmIFI8
  17. I think Torbert had passed by then. A shame, loved him in NRPS. Hello Mary Lou!
  18. I can tell you what I remember about the Zak Wylde show, I don't remember much. I'll start by acknowledging that he's not my cup of tea at all, and seeing him play with the Allmans was nauseating to me. My memory is that he got the call to fill in because he used to play in a cover band that did a lot of Allmans tunes, so he knew the material. He spent the show preening and demonstrating like a heavy metal rock star would, which was so out of place I can't begin to tell you. I don't remember much about the music and I never listened to the show. As I wrote above, I was so disgusted that t
