Restraint, subtlety, and space, at least within the confines of rock n roll, are not always virtues. One of the reasons I think the lineup at Watkins Glen is so fascinating (aside from the fact that I love all 3 bands) is that you have the GD and ABB--who were perpetually pushing outward with their music--and The Band, who was the polar opposite and seemed to pull inward and be very restrained (at least in comparison). Which approach is "better" is a moot point because without each other to contrast against, either style can become somewhat "boring" after a while.

The LiveNation shed near my house in Columbus is up for sale and not expected to reopen as a music venue next year. The land in front of it is already bulldozed for a strip mall, and now that the summer concert season is over, I'm still amazed each day I drive past it and the shed is still standing. People are chomping at the bit to build on that site. Its always sad to see music venues go, but I guess we'll get by. LiveNation only scheduled like maybe 8-10 shows there this summer and it wasn't exactly a stellar lineup. The last show was Toby f'ing Keith. Way to go out with a bang, bitc

Well, maybe with another year of Hitch in charge the mighty mighty BJs have a shot at almost threatening to possibly contend for the last playoff spot this year. Almost. Oy, what's a lifelong Capitals fan now located in Blue Jacket country to do? Wake me when its over. -
I hear its an ok place if it weren't for all of these guys running around stealing yr pizza: :badger

Good to see N.Va well represented around here.

No, you're mistaken. I said I didn't go to Lake Braddock. The handsome and witty part is true, though, although kind of creepy and stalkerish. Stop it!

According to Wikipedia, most of them went to Lake Braddock HS...which means I can't like them anymore cuz we all know that West Springfield roolz!!1 Or something. I remember the first time I saw them was completely by accident. They were playing a place in the MD burbs where I used to hang out a lot with one of my ex-gfs and we almost left b/c when we saw the marquee we thought it was death-metal night. We stuck around and it was a really fun show. I moved out of the area, but I was vaguely aware that the band was getting pretty big. I didn't get around to buying their albums and gett

Where to start with The Grateful Dead?

That is actually pretty awesome. I like how the skull is drinking from a straw despite the warning label stating that the beverage is dangerously hot. That's hardcore, bro. -
No idea. But I've got a hunch that, being a on-campus venue, they probably won't be rockin' into the wee hours of the morning. But I don't know that for sure.

I had a "Best Of" comp that went mostly unlistened-to for at least a decade or more until people on this board convinced me that they are, like, the greatest band evar, or something. I picked up the first two records and, still, it didn't all click until after watching the Last Waltz. Something about the live performances brought it together for me.

Agreed, although from what I've heard/read about it, it wasn't as great as it could have been. Even so....damn I'd like to have a time machine.

Ya know, I haven't been back to the GD site since the TS axed downloads since I can't stream at work--and I'm finding that without my weekly dose of new stuff to listen to, well, I haven't listened to very much GD at all in the last few weeks. Not a rant, just an observation. Good business move, guys. -
Indeed. That's awesome, Jen. I know he's not out of the woods, but those are all really encouraging signs!

But he's an Offensive GeniusTM!!1!

I'd be ok with no opener and more Wilco in Columbus.

Well, now that Michigan has finally won a game, lets all pause for a moment to gaze at Northwestern and Minnesota losing to the Dookies and Florida Atlantic, repectively. Wow. Rumors are circulating that DeVry and Phoenix University Online's intramural teams are looking to join the Big Ten mid-season and are predicted to have the inside-track to the Rose Bowl.
-
You can't beat the classics. I wasn't aware that joke was in circulation outside the city of Columbus. Unrelated, but when I moved into my freshman dorm there was a roll of TP in the bathroom that had the words "Flush twice, its a long way to Michigan" printed on it.

Ha! Just goes to show that I didn't read that far down into the thread. I'm pretty sure we are what is wrong with society and stuff. I hope nobody noticed.

I wanted to post that yesterday but didn't want to be "that guy" who always has to show up with the silly post. By today the temptation became too great.

I think it worked out for the best the way it happened. Well, I guess a more amicable breakup would have been nice, but I think UT had run its course. As good as Anodyne was, I really don't see where they could have gone from there. I can understand where the Trace/AM dream-mashups come from, though. Even as good as Trace is, I really only truly love about half it and the rest felt like there was something missing. Same was true of AM, and maybe moreso, but I don't think mashing them together is the answer. They were already pulling in opposite directions and I'm not sure UT had anythin

This morning somebody slipped a whoopie cushion under me as I was sitting down to eat my cereal. I looked around and found Nels and John hiding in the corner giggling like a couple of schoolgirls and high fiving each other. You got me this time, Wilco! As a more serious answer, probably the last time I felt truly surprised by Wilco was when I first heard Summerteeth. The shift in sound from BT was jarring, but after that I pretty much learned to expect those kinds of changes from album to album. As for live shows, I have tix for their Oct 16 show and I am deliberately not listening

I always thought Jay's voice was the best thing about UT.

I got a pair of sneakers at Target for $20 several months ago. They aren't particularly comfortable or stylish, but they were cheap. To be honest, I'm hoping it won't be long before they finish disintegrating off my feet and I can justify going to get new ones. I think I only own three pair of shoes: summer, winter, snow boot.
