  1. Is it too soon to ask the mods for our own subforum??
  2. No disrespect to Bob, but I'm not sure I'm seeing his point here. He doesn't seem to be talking about concert recordings--the kind of "tape trading" that he says never had an impact on their album sales.(and actually helped spread the music, in many cases) I'd agree that the jamband circuit accounts for a huge segment of music downloads, but that is also because those bands tend to be taper-friendly and so there are sites like etree or archive or whatever that just have tons of stuff. But, in those cases, its not the commercial releases that are being downloaded--so how is it fundamentally
  3. This is the first time I've bothered with any of the "spinoff" bands. For whatever reason, they never really appealed to me. But I was late to the party for the real deal and only saw the GD once--and was probably too young at that point to fully appreciate it. And so after many years of listening to albums and live recordings it just seemed like it would be fun to go out and hear some of these songs being played in person again. Even if its not quite the same magic, it still sounds like a fun night and a good chance to go see a guy I whom I'm glad is still out there making music.
  4. I'm a pretty mediocre guitar player. Maybe the video game route will work out better for me.
  5. That's entertainment, folks. Okay, I've made up my mind to keep an open mind on him.
  6. I shouldn't write off Keller so quickly. I'm really not that familiar with him, but when I decided to go to this show I dl'd his newest album from emusic and I really haven't been able to get into it at all. I bet his stuff goes over much better live, tho...
  7. Yeah, I've really never had the urge to see RD before, but I've been on a huge GD kick for the past several months and I figure if Bob's gonna be playing 10 min from my house, why the hell not? Having Steve Kimock on this tour is a nice bonus. I don't care too much for Keller Williams, tho, so maybe I'll arrive late.
  8. For me, Being There was the album I associated with a terrible time in my life and I was unable to listen to it for the longest time. It is back to being my favorite Wilco record, and the songs all have special significance to me because of that. I dunno if I recommend Electro-Shock Blues. That's an album I also bought while going through that same hard time and I remember thinking "Fuck, this dude is more depressed than I am! This isn't helping at all!"
  9. For better or for worse, part of Pfork's shtick is that they seem to assume the reader possesses a certain level of familiarity with a lot of the bands they write about, so they can write stuff with sort of a knowing smirk. I think they assume that very few people are coming to their website that don't know anything about Wilco, because if you've been following the indie-rock press at all this decade, Wilco has been almost universally fawned upon. So, I frequently get the feeling that Pf gets a kick out of being kind of contrarian about it. I dunno. Doesn't really bother me.
  10. This thread needs a bump. In related news, I'm going to see Ratdog next week. I've never gone to see them before, probably because I wasn't sure I could handle a full show of All-Weir-All-The-Time, but I'm needing a summertime live-GD-music fix. So there ya go...
  11. I would start my mix with one of his answering-machine rants. That would be sweet.
  12. Nicely-played, A-man. As for the original post, I'm not sure what to tell ya. My wife listens to country. Likes the Dixie Chicks (who are tolerable), but thankfully isn't really into any of those dudes who are currently mega-popular. Says she wants to get into some newer music, so I try extending an olive branch across from time to time. Told her, for instance, that one of her favorite songs off that latest Dixie Chicks album was written by a guy from a band called the Jayhawks and I've got some of their stuff if she wanted to check them out... So far I've had limited success. She
  13. FWIW, I grew up in Springfield, VA, and feel my hometown was wrongfully left out of this.
  14. If you think you are listening right, then you are still listening wrong.
  15. Every band has only one good album. All you fanboys are just kidding yourselves by liking the rest of them.
  16. Yeah. I have a secret. Can't Stand It is the only "rocker" on the album that I really like. (not kidding)
  17. This would have been an excellent song title.
  18. While I agree with the cause, I can't decide of this whole thing is admirable or if its just kind of silly. They're trying so hard for the Big Statement here, but the activism seems kind of grafted on. Musically, they definitely went mainstream, which isn't necessarily a problem--in terms of generating the biggest audience it makes sense, but it is also why some of this feels not entirely genuine. I dunno. From reading messageboards, I've seen plenty of bitching from both the indie kids and the hippies that they don't understand why it wasn't geared more towards them because their group
  19. I've been a fan for years but have somehow never gotten around to seeing them live. They really need to come play near me sometime soon.
  20. And thank goodness for that. Not that the studio albums are bad (well, okay, some of them ain't great), but that's not really where the magic happened and I think there would be an awful lot of younger people wondering what the fuss was all about if that's all we had to listen to now. lowspark86, thanks for the tip on the "other half" of the Hundred Year Hall show. HYH is a good release, though always seemed like it was "missing" a bunch of songs I wished were on it to make for a truly great show--I'll have to check out the other half of the show! Thanks to everyone posting lists. I'm
  21. initially: ...almost made me abandon Wilco altogether because it has a bunch of songs that sound like this: "doooooooweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee----doo-dooo---woo--doooo-woo" after some reflection: ...taught me that maybe, just maybe "pop" isn't necessarily a dirty word. many years down the road: ...still contains some of the best Wilco songs that I play the least.
  22. ...needs more volume in spots (like the first minute or two of the record) and could stand some drone-editing in others, but is otherwise quite nice.
