  1. I just don't get this band. The songs were alright - fine is actually the word I truely think describes them. But nothing about them makes me want to buy NB (I own Funeral, and aside from a handful of songs, I don't think it's worth replaying). But then again, I can't get into any of the bands you kids talk about; I'd rather listen to Sinatra.
  2. Room On Fire is, without a doubt, my favorite Strokes reocrd. Furthermore, I'd call it ones of the 10 best records of the 00's, and ultimately it could even make my top 10 favorite records list. FIOE, on the other hand, I enjoy a lot. No, it does not compare with the other two, but it sounds like a transitional record. I look forward to seeing where this band goes.
  3. So I bought the 3-disc Burt Bacharach box set from Rhino, The Look Of Love. Is this man not one of the greatest songwriters off all time or what? Everytime I listen to "Walk On By" I'm convinced it's the greatest song ever - then I hear "There's Always Something There To Remind Me" and "Anyone Who Had A Heart." Anyone else worship this man? I sure do hope so.
  4. Frank Sinatra: In The Wee Small Hours Runners Up: Neil Young - Tonight's The Night Weezer - Pinkerton Elvis Costello: My Aim Is True
  5. John was/is apparently a wierd nomad who continually asked my good friends daughter out on a regular basis. She declined, but kept in touch with him, and through their relationship John almost came to our HS to talk in audio classes. That's about it.
  6. I'm sober, but I'll back up my buddy down the block: JT rules.
  7. This sounds awesome, you know, for wierdos like us.
  8. I just want to say that Solace's initial comment on "The Future Embrace" cracked me up, but then made me cringe. That was sooooo awful.
  9. What was the second song played during the press conference, the one after Johnny B. Goode? You Need Another Lover? I've been meaning to get into Prince since the summer; this performance may be the catalyst.
  10. I would argue that the second side of Bruce's The Wild The Innocent and the E Street Shuffle--Rosalita, Incident on 57th St, NYC Serenade--is the most flawless side in all of rock music. That's a big statement, but I don't feel the least bit pretensious saying it.
  11. I hate to agree with Pitchfork, but "God Only Knows" is what I'm gonna say - for today at least.
  12. I love Eels, but I also feel as if E is the one man whose records I buy out of pity. I listen to Electro Shock Blues and think, "I am SO sorry; I will buy all records to make you feel better."
  13. Didn't they play in California a few months ago? I assume the sets will mainly be made up of the first 5 albums.
  14. I saw it last night because of the excellent reviews, and I'm not sure how I feel - which is probably a good thing as I'm hardly the type to think hard about movies. Clive Owen and Michael Caine were, as is to be expected, great, but I thought the ending was a cop-out. And while the movie was very intense, the plot did become a bit inspid at parts.
  15. Thanks LouieB and Twisted Acres! I think I'm going to buy the Lady Day set and the Commodore Master Takes and see what happens from there.
  16. To get this a bit off track: LouieB, what Billie Holiday cds/compilations would you reccomend? I don't have anything.
  17. I love it because these songs have been heartbreakingly unimpressive live..........imo of course
  18. I loved Float On, but this is pretty easily avoidable.
  19. Which would you consider his best? I'm in love with The Blueprint, Black Album and Reasonable Doubt equally. Unfortuantely, I'm pretty let down by Kingdom Come. It may be the dissapointment of the year.
  20. There's also a theory that Elliot asked his gf to stab him, hence the lack of a hesitation wound. This is what Elliot's family thinks, from what I've heard. And I just listened to Figure 8 for the first time in probably 15 months. It's excellent.
  21. Most of the songs on Berlin or Electroshock Blues would fit the bill.
  22. Well, there are ceratinly plenty of U2 fans who didn't like Bomb at all, but I think it's really well written. As for ATYCLB, I think the first 8 songs are great, and the last four aren't very good at all.
  23. A few things to say. Yes, I'm gonna ramble because I'm drunk. 1) I loathe David Frick. Think he's a jackass. 2) I love Wilco, and I would place their last 3 records in the top 200 of all time, but there is very little of their work that can't be traced to a previous artist/movement/sound. As such, it's hard for me to put them before any of the true trailblazing artists (as it is for all post-u2 bands) 3) Speaking of U2, HTDAAB is a great rock record--their best since Zooropa, imo. 4) Rolling Stone sucks a hard one; fuck them. Peace.
  24. I think we can all agree that this is the musical equivilant of ranking ones children. Let's just hope someday VU will have as many fans as The Rolling Stones--the world would be a better place!
