  1. Started this last night. It's a pretty amazing (and true) story about two oil tankers caught in a storm off of Cape Cod in the early 1950s. They both split in half with the crews still on board. Despite the 70 foot seas, the Coast Guard sent out a 36-foot wooden boat with a crew of four to rescue the crew of one of the tankers.
  2. Lars and the Real Girl. This was on my DVR for over a year and I never watched it until tonight. I thought it was great ...
  3. He's a hipster and only listens to wax cylinders.
  4. New Magnetic Fields came out yesterday. They are back to the synthy pop. So far, so good.
  5. Not sure why it took me so long to get to this. I loved Housekeeping. I'm not sure I like Gilead as much as I loved Housekeeping but it is awfully good.
  6. That's one of my favorite Sonic Youth songs.
  7. Jason Varitek to retire: http://www.boston.com/sports/baseball/redsox/extras/extra_bases/2012/02/varitek_to_anno.html?p1=News_links
  8. Only ones I'm definitely going to are the Magnetic Fields and the Feelies but thinking about some others: Wild Flag - Paradise March 31 Magnetic Fields - Berklee April 6 and 7 Lambchop - Paradise April 17 M Ward (w/Lee Ranaldo opening) - House of Blues May 8 Feelies - Paradise May 12
  9. 9/4 was my first ever Dead show. (I had seen the Jerry Garcia Band earlier that summer.)
  10. I agree with everything you said - except the last sentence. At least from what Byrne says publicly, I don't think he is basking in the glory of Talking Heads. He has moved on and wants to do new things - write books, program a building to make music, design bike racks, make an album with Fatboy Slim, do a TED Talk. He seems pretty content even while acknowledging that what he does will not have the impact of Talking Heads. If anything, I think it is the other three who are trying to bask in the glory of Talking Heads.
  11. I saw that and it's a shame. I saw him a few times when he was with the Replacements and didn't pay too much attention to him because I was so focused on Westerberg. But a few years later I saw him as a solo act (opening for Son Volt, I think) and he was great. Good songs, great playing, and he was very very funny.
  12. Agree on all counts. A quick google news search shows a number of articles over the past five years where Frantz says the rest of them are game and where Byrne says he has no interest. Then again, if Frank Black/Black Francis and Kim Deal can make up ...
  13. According to Deadbase it was played 13 times, all in early 1968. It's a weird one but I'm surprised they retired it so early ...
  14. You can download a track from the forthcoming album here: http://pitchfork.com/reviews/tracks/13208-sunshine-in-chicago/
  15. Love Goes To Buildings on Fire by Will Hermes. It is a pretty interesting look at a number of music scenes (punk, jazz, rock, hip hop, salsa, classical) that were going through big changes in New York City between 1973 and 1978.
  16. I came across this site where a guy in New York tracks down the exact spots where album covers were photographed. Some of it is pretty impressive (and obsessive). Who knew The Kids Are Alright photo was taken in Morningside Heights? http://www.popspotsnyc.com/
  17. That was actually pretty good - and probably fairly complicated to pull off.
  18. Some shows: April 27 Bell House, Brooklyn April 28 Helsinki Hudson, Hudson, NY May 11 Pearl Street, Northampton, MA May 12 Paradise, Boston
  19. Tim Wakefield to retire: http://www.bostonherald.com/sports/baseball/red_sox/view.bg?articleid=1404331 Always liked Wakefield. I saw him pitch some great games ...
  20. Some funny Tweedy footage here: http://www.vh1.com/video/interview/733263/does-anyone-know-how-to-pronounce-bon-iver.jhtml
