1. This made me laugh really hard ...
2. I just went out and bought the deluxe version. I have not listened to the stream or tracked it down via other methods so I'm looking forward to getting home tonight and listening to it all for the first time.
3. As another complete aside, this is absolutely correct. Such a great album.
4. Agreed. And I really really hope that “Hallelujah” is a new REM song and not a new REM cover of the Leonard Cohen song. Because the world does not need another cover of that song ...
5. Tracklist for REM's next greatest hits release out November 15. 6. Although Wilco was part of the 1995 H.O.R.D.E. tour ...
7. The one they refer to in the press release won't be out until November.
8. Agreed (although I'd back it up to Chronic Town). For most of high school and the first year or so of college I listened to the Dead, Dylan, and the Beatles and a few others. Some of my friends were raving about Murmur and I liked it but it didn't totally grab me. But when Reckoning came out there was no going back. I must have listened to Harborcoat a thousand times. And REM led me to Husker Du, the Minutemen, the Feelies, the Replacements, and so many other great bands.
9. I'm also reading the Continuum/33 1/3 book about this. One of my favorite albums ...
10. "Is the new album more like AM or Summerteeth?"
11. I wonder who is going to be playing guitar with him ...
12. Great article by Rick Moody about band reunions in general and the Feelies in particular: http://therumpus.net/2011/09/swinging-modern-sounds-31-reunion-fever/
13. Thoughts? Destroyer of the Void didn't do much for me.
14. Just saw this. It's a weird movie. It's got some great footage of the 1970's emerging punk scene in New York: Ramones, Television, Talking Heads, Heartbreakers, Patti Smith, etc. But the audio isn't synched to the footage, which is weird to watch for an hour. There are no interviews and only a handful of short random scenes of the musicians outside of the clubs.
15. Pretty good write-up from the Boston Globe's music blog: http://www.boston.com/ae/music/blog/ JEFF MANGUM With ACME (American Contemporary Music Ensemble) At: Sanders Theatre, last night (repeats tonight at Jordan Hall) By Marc Hirsh Globe Correspondent CAMBRIDGE -- Operating under the moniker Neutral Milk Hotel, Jeff Mangum recorded two albums – one of which, “In the Aeroplane Over the Sea,” rapidly revealed itself as one of the best of its era and well beyond – and then vanished for a dozen years. As a result, all Mangum has to do to wring fervent applause out of his devoted cult follo
16. I was there and thought it was fantastic. His voice sounds great. I was curious how some of the more elaborate songs would sound stripped down to solo acoustic but he did a great job with that. My only complaint is that it was fairly short - 60 or 65 minutes including two encores.
17. In my early naive days of internet use a friend told me to check out the band Blonde Redhead so I searched for them at work one day. I was pretty sure I was going to be fired based on what appeared in the search results.
18. I met Jonathan Richman years ago and he was very nice. I had seen him in Boston and then a few months later I moved to Ithaca NY and he was playing there. I went over to say hi and mentioned being from Boston and we had a nice conversation about Boston neighborhoods and places. I ran into Alex Chilton on the streets of New York. We walked together for a while talking about New York and the pacific northwest. He seemed to want to talk about anything but music. Kristin Hersh (Throwing Muses) and Tanya Donelly (Throwing Muses/Belly) are both really nice and approachable.
19. I am really bummed to be missing that but I'm going to see Jeff Mangum instead so it's not all bad.
