2010 MLB - Playoffs and hot stove!
Oil Can Boyd replied to Duck-Billed Catechist's topic in Tongue-Tied Lightning
I could watch that over and over again. And watching it just now reminded me of how tired I was those couple of weeks. -
Not to defend the list but according to the title of the thread it is the best first films by directors ...

Just curious - who would you say was first? -
I'm going to see him read tonight.

It's all that and a little bit more. Actually I am enjoying it. I remember reading The Corrections and thinking that I really liked the book and at the same time really disliked all of the characters. This has some of that same feeling but it is very well done. It's a fairly bleak view of America or at least a certain segment of America of which, frankly, I am probably a part. Oh and as I mentioned in another thread Wilco and Tweedy are mentioned a bunch of times.
-
This would be more "Wilco read while I'm out and about" but I am reading Jonathan Franzen's latest novel Freedom and one of the characters is a musician. As part of his story line there have been several references to Tweedy and/or Wilco.

I too saw them open for Pavement and liked the Jenny more than the Johnny.

Reportedly Jerry only lived there for less than a year. His estate sold it in 1997 and the guy who bought it totally renovated it. About five years ago he was selling items from the house (toilets, dishwashers, drawer handles, etc.) to try to raise money for a foundation. I don't think I ever heard how the sale went but I remember lots of articles at the time about people bidding on ebay for Jerry's toilet. As others have noted, it's safe to say that the place now looks nothing like it did 15 years ago when Jerry lived there.

Magnetic Fields - 100,000 Fireflies I have a mandolin I play it all night long It makes me want to kill myself I also have a dobro Made in some mountain range Sounds like a mountain range in love But when I turn up the tone On my electric guitar I'm afraid of the dark without you close to me I went out to the forest and caught A hundred thousand fireflies As they ricochet round the room They remind me of your starry eyes Someone else's might not have made me so sad But this is the worst night I ever had 'cause I'm afraid of the dark without you close to me You won't be happy with me,

Eleven:Eleven by Come. Saw this guys last night and it was fantastic. Great guitars, great rhythm section. Pretty dark but lots of fun. I think they are only playing two shows - last night and then this weekend at Matador 21.

And reading Kristin Hersh's memoir Rat Girl.

Breaking news: Lou Reed Snubs Susan Boyle!
Oil Can Boyd replied to Magnetized's topic in Someone Else's Song
Susan Boyle putting Lou Reed song on album Sept. 22, 2010, 4:46 PM EST Susan Boyle has recorded the song she was prevented from performing on TV. The Scottish sensation was crushed that she couldn't perform Lou Reed's "Perfect Day" on a recent "America's Got Talent" episode. Representatives for Lou Reed have said it was a licensing glitch. But the singer is getting the last laugh: The anthem is set to be the lead song on her second album, "The Gift." Boyle's last album, "I Dreamed a Dream," was the world's biggest-selling album of 2009, and has sold almost 9 million copies to date. -
The "interview" with Malkmus was pretty painful but they did a nice version of Gold Soundz.

Pavement is on the Colbert Report tonight.

I remember Throwing Muses used to cover the two Ls on their Marshall amps so they said "Marsha." And yes, tinnitus, I'm looking forward to the rest of your pics because 1) they are always great and 2) I was kinda far back ...

I'm guessing you were close enough to see - was that David Cross who came out and sang with Spiral Stairs?
-
I had no plans to see this tour (despite being a big Pavement fan) but a friend called me at 5:00 yesterday saying he had a free ticket for last night's show in Boston. I am really glad I went; the show was great. I don't have a setlist but it had most of what I expected. The stuff from Slanted sounded particularly good to me. I think it is partly because to my ears Malkmus is a much better guitar player than he was when they wrote those songs.

The Allman's Mountain Jam is based on the Donovan song "There Is a Mountain."
-
Me too. I usually don't go back past 69 Love Songs in their catalog so I sometimes forget how good that early stuff is.

Been listening to a lot of Stereolab recently ...
