  1. I know I have mentioned the Kinks' movie in other threads but I thought this was pretty cool (from today's Boston Globe): Graham Parker performs at party for Kinks movie British rocker Graham Parker made a surprise appearance at the after-party for "Do It Again," director Rob Patton-Spruill's movie about Globe reporter Geoff Edgers's quest to reunite the Kinks. Saturday's sold-out screening at the Somerville Theatre was part of the Independent Film Festival Boston. (Among those turned away without a ticket were former 'BCN jock Oedipus and one of Edgers's former professors at Tufts.) Park
  2. It's not Buffalo Tom but it is outside of Boston/NYC ... Bill Janovitz is playing a one-off solo acoustic show at Schuba's in Chicago on July 16.
  3. That is great news. Caldo Verde is pretty good about giving away stuff when you order through the website.
  4. A little late weighing in. As always, nice photos tinnitus. Not sure I have much to add. Great, great show. Highlights for me were One By One, Spiders, Laminated Cat, and Thank You Friends. I loved how they shared singing the verses on Thank You Friends. My only complaint was that I was over on the right and couldn't see Pat a lot of the time. Other than that, I would gladly do it again ...
  5. Andrew Bogut breaks his hand and dislocates his elbow. Nasty stuff ... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pmY1wQ8nzSM&feature=related
  6. Pretty interesting reading, but not at all like the Scorsese movie. It's more a series of anecdotes and character descriptions, but no real plot per se. I also understand that Asbury somewhat exaggerates a lot of the stories.
  7. I have seen a lot of shows there over the years and the best I can say is that it is OK. On the plus side, it's relatively small (2,700 seats), has decent sight lines, is kind of funky, and the sound is generally pretty good. On the down side, the seats are really small and close together, the whole place is somewhat run down (despite "restoration fees" being added to every ticket they sell), and if you buy beer you have to drink it in the lobby.
  8. Things only get sillier: Rachel Maddow vs. Scott Brown. Today's Boston Globe included this article: Rachel Maddow criticizes Sen. Brown in ad MSNBC-TV talk show host Rachel Maddow is lambasting Republican Senator Scott Brown in a full-page ad in the Globe today, saying he used a "made-up" rumor that she would run against him for Senate in an e-mail to raise funds. "I'm running this ad not because I'm running against Scott Brown -- I'm not, he made that up -- but because he's the senator for all of us," Maddow, a western Massachusetts resident, says in the ad, "and maybe this will make
  9. Saw the Feelies last night at the Middle East in Cambridge (MA). As always, they put on a really great show. When it was announced that the show was "An Evening with Feelies" and that there would be two sets, I assumed that one of the sets would be the Crazy Rhythms album in its entirety, which they had done last fall. It seemed to be heading in that direction because the first set contained nothing from Crazy Rhythms, but then they started the second set and played almost nothing from Crazy Rhythms either. By the end of the night they had played (I think) five songs from the album but the
  10. OpEd piece from Paul Westerberg in tomorrow's New York Times March 21, 2010 Op-Ed Contributor Beyond the Box Tops By PAUL WESTERBERG Minneapolis HOW does one react to the death of one’s mentor? My mind instantly slammed down the inner trouble-door that guards against all thought, emotion, sadness. Survival mode. Rock guitar players are all dead men walking. It’s only a matter of time, I tell myself as I finger my calluses. Those who fail to click with the world and society at large find safe haven in music — to sing, write songs, create, perform. Each an active art in itself that offers
  11. Here it is. It's pretty cool ... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H9LGwzGnx5w
  12. Wow. I'm bummed. I saw some great shows of his at the old Knitting Factory in NYC in the late 1980s. One year he was playing a string of shows. I went one night and it was great so I went by the Knitting Factory to get tickets to the next night's show. As I walked up, Chilton walked out of the building. We chatted for a while and then walked uptown together for about ten blocks before parting ways. He was really nice, and I remember he wanted to talk about anything but music.
  13. I put this on at home over the weekend and my 11 year old daughter asked "Is this Dawes?" I said "Yes! How did you know?" She said "Because it's all you ever play ..."
  14. Love Talking Heads. True Stories (the album) is the only thing of theirs that I don't really like. (I saw the movie when it first came out and have no desire to see it again.) There was a thread on here a while ago about the best runs of great albums by a band and, for me, 77/More Songs/Fear of Music/Remain in Light is pretty tough to top. Byrne's post Talking Heads stuff has never grabbed me but I do really like the Catherine Wheel soundtrack that he did.
  15. Interesting article in The Atlantic about the Management Secrets of the Grateful Dead.
  16. Nomar retires - as a member of the Red Sox.
  17. I read it a couple of weeks ago and loved it. About half way through I went out and got a copy of 25th Hour but haven't started that yet.
  18. I know I have plugged the blog/cover of the week project by Buffalo Tom's Bill Janovitz before, but he has a nice write up (and cover) of Mark Linkous up on his site.
  19. Some Buffalo Tom shows coming up: Le Poisson Rouge, NYC (as part of the Cabinet of Wonders) 5/20 Mercury Lounge NYC 5/21 Paradise Boston 6/11
  20. When I saw the title of this thread that is the first film that popped into my head. It's great - and it's been too long since I have seen it. Great soundtrack (by Mark Knopfler) too.
  21. I saw Dando a few weeks ago, mostly solo electric but Chris Brokaw played with him for part of the set. He played Hard Drive which was a treat.
