  1. In the annals of bad site redesigns, metacritic's has to be up near the top.
  2. So the big Universal Music Group roll-out has been delayed and meanwhile music from Domino, Merge and the Beggars Group family (which includes Matador) of labels will no longer be available on eMusic as of Nov. 18, 2010. This is going from bad to worse ...
  3. Moes or Modes? I always thought it was Modes ...

  5. I saw the show last night in Boston and I'd agree with everything you wrote. Great musicianship, lots of pageantry (balloons, confetti, beach balls), and lots of fun. He opened with Seven Swans but then the rest of the set was Age Of Adz and All Delighted People until he closed the main set with Chicago. I have mixed feelings about the new album but live it was really great. It helped that I was in the third row but I think it was one of those shows that makes the entire theater feel involved.
  6. I'm totally with you on How Far We've Come but we'll have to agree to disagree on Fire Away. I do like Time Spent in Los Angeles, another new one.
  7. Can't believe I didn't pick that up when I saw them the other night. How is it?
  8. Yup, it's pretty stunning. Not quite as bad as when Rafael Palmeiro won a Gold Glove the year he only played 28 games in the field, but still pretty bad.
  9. American League Gold Gloves Catcher: Joe Mauer (Twins) First base: Mark Teixeira (Yankees) Second base: Robinson Cano (Yankees) Shortstop: Derek Jeter (Yankees) Third base: Evan Longoria (Rays), Outfield: Ichiro Suzuki (Mariners), Carl Crawford (Rays), Franklin Gutierrez (Mariners) Pitcher: Mark Buehrle (White Sox)
  10. On Dawes' facebook page last night they wrote "ATTN DETROIT: The venue for tomorrow's show has been changed to the Majestic Cafe. See ya there!?"
  11. Ditto on feeling that grandpaboy's last stand is a messy sketch of a bunch of ideas. And also ditto on the request for a link to the two songs ...
  12. Saw these guys last night and while it was good, it didn't blow me away. Maybe it was that it was the third time I've seen them this year. The stuff they do well was still really good. Great harmonies. I love watching (and listening to) Griffin Goldsmith play the drums. He's got a great style. But the new songs they played were not so great, including one real stinker ("Fire Away") that my friend said sounded like they were trying to be Bon Jovi. It was still fun but maybe I need to give myself a little break from them.
  13. My recollection is that they did make it clear what they were doing, and I totally agree that the audience response is the main part of what makes it interesting. I liked that New Yorker article, as well. I didn't know much about Cage.
  14. I saw the Magnetic Fields play it once. It was the end of the two-night show playing all of 69 Love Songs. People were clapping for an encore and the band came out to the front of the stage, one of them started the timer on their watch, and they just stood there. It actually got an interesting reaction. Most people watched quietly, there was a lot of nervous laughter, and one guy started screaming at them. He went right up towards the stage and started shouting "this is lame, play something!"
  15. No kidding. He's looked great. I heard someone say on the radio "you couldn't get a BB past him the way he's playing ..."
  16. Every time I play that at home (which is pretty often) my 12 year old daughter rolls her eyes and says "this is that CD where the singer swears all the time."
  17. Bettie Serveert - Palomine Saw them last night and they were really good; they have an amazing new drummer. But there was something a little sad about it. Small crowd (75 people maybe), playing in the same club they have played many times. I don't know. Maybe I'm just feeling old ...
  18. Yeah - they did the recent reissues of the first two Feelies albums that came out last year. I know Freedy Johnston's last album was on Bar/None but I have no idea who else they handle.
  19. via pitchfork: The Feelies Plan First Album in Two Decades Fans of ancestral indie rock, get excited. In 2008, New Jersey postpunk pioneers the Feelies reunited to play a few shows and reissued their classic out-of-print albums. They must've liked the way things went, since they're now getting ready to release a new album, their first since 1991's Time for a Witness. The new LP is due next spring on Bar/None, produced by band members Bill Million and Glenn Mercer. As of right now, the band has finished recording the album's basic tracks.
  20. Yup - the Burma/Wilco show was at the Fleet Boston Pavilion/Harborlights place on the waterfront.
