  1. I mentioned this in the NP thread but so far I like - but don't love - the album. And it is growing on me the more I listen to it. It definitely has some great melodies mixed in and some classic Merritt clever lyrics, but some of it just seems like filler. I am seeing them next week so I'll report back. I remember liking the stuff from Distortion more live than on disc so maybe the same will eb true for this one.
  2. I got a little head start on both of you. First saw the Jerry Garcia Band in July 1980 and the Dead in Providence on 9/4/80. The show in Boston in the spring of '81 was really good. I remember being blown away by Bird Song ...
  3. December 10, 1971: Traded by the New York Mets with Frank Estrada, Don Rose and Leroy Stanton to the California Angels for Jim Fregosi.
  4. Me too, and I gotta say, I'm not loving it. There are some great Stephen Merritt melodies and lyrics but overall I'd say it is good but not great. (And maybe I should stop assuming that they are going to put out something that I love as much as I love 69 Love Songs.)
  5. This story is a little weird. According to the Palm Beach Post, homes and schools close to Dolphins Stadium are receiving “sex offender advisory” postcards this week warning residents to watch out for The Who’s Pete Townshend.
  6. Seeing the Feelies there in 1987 was one of my favorite shows of all time.
  7. Dawes - North Hills I am really liking this album.
  8. Dawson to wear Expos' hat. Andre Dawson to enter Hall of Fame as Expo, prefers Cubs By Associated Press | Wednesday, January 27, 2010 | CHICAGO - Andre Dawson will be inducted into the Hall of Fame as a Montreal Expo, despite his preference to go in as a Chicago Cub. The hall announced its decision Wednesday. Dawson told WMVP-AM in Chicago that he thought hall officials would discuss the issue with him in detail before the decision was made. He said he wanted a chance to tell them "what really catapulted me to Hall of Fame status and pretty much what my preference was but I think th

  10. To answer my own question about Magnet, I did email them and here is the response I got: "We haven't published an issue since the Nick Cave one. We are trying to weather these horrible economic times and hope to do a new issue soon. Since our subscriptions are based on number of issues, not a length of time, you shouldn't be shortchanged on your subscription."
  11. Here we go: Scott Brown makes his first endorsement. He has endorsed a candidate who has asserted that President Obama was born in Kenya rather than the United States, and who drew complaints from his neighbors during the 2008 presidential campaign for putting up signs on his property depicting Obama as Osama bin Laden.
  12. My question is more about Magnet than REM: does anyone know if Magnet is still publishing a real magazine? I subscribe and haven't received a new issue on a realllly long time. The "new" issue they show on their website is the most recent issue I have (and it is dated "Winter 2009.")
  13. I've seen them twice: once in a club and once in a small theater and they were both great. The first time I saw them they opened with "Wake Up" and it remains one of my favorite live music moments of all time. Seeing them all step up and start to sing sent chills up my spine.
  14. This was perhaps the strangest part of his acceptance speech: "As always, I rely on Gail's love and support, and that of our two lovely daughters. So I want to thank Ayla and Arianna for their help as well. And just in case anyone who's watching throughout the country they're both available. No, no. No. Only kidding, only kidding. Only kidding, only kidding. Arianna... Arianna's, definitely not available. But Ayla is. This is Arianna. This is Ayla. I can see I'm going to get in trouble when I get home."
  15. That's good news that she is working on new stuff. (And I just learned that she and Catherine O'Hara are sisters ...)
  16. According to this USA Today article he's a pretty interesting dude. General Larry Platt: A closer look We all got a good chuckle Wednesday out of General Larry Platt and his Pants on the Ground song. Entertaining as he was, I couldn't help but wonder why the American Idol producers saved the last spot of the show for a 62-year-old guy with a funny song. Now I think I know. Take a look at the photograph on the home page of the Civil Rights Veterans Movement website. See the young man on the left, looking directly into the camera? That's Larry Platt, age 16. "We had come by bus in 1963
  17. This post from FiveThirtyEight isn't much more positive.
  18. And now according to boston.com he is coming up to Boston on Sunday to campaign for her.
  19. This is sort of funny too: "The Coakley ad ... was already drawing comment and ridicule today from Republicans because it included a misspelling of the name of the state. The ad says it was 'Paid for by the Massachusettes Democratic Party and authorized by Martha Coakley for Senate.'"
  20. Sir Stewart, just remember: it’s not the ‘Kennedy Seat,’ it’s the people’s seat. It is certainly getting closer (and nastier) than I expected. (Full disclosure: I voted for Alan Khazei in the primary.)
