I don't know if they have been playing new Wilco for the last week or so since everytime I'm in the car I'm listening to SBS.

Word. However the Jeff/Nels double on Impossible Germany is pretty awesome.
-
I think so too. It's definitely a theme album.

I found it "interesting" the poster felt it was important to classify fans into "legitimate" fans. If he knew anything about Nels Cline he would know that his greatest fans are "Essential", not legitimate.

I completely agree JM. Even the abbey road comparison. There's another line in "Leave Me (Like You Found Me)" that says, "They're finally up off their knees." Possibly a reference to Ashes Of American Flags. Anybody else wonder about that?

Impossible Germany = Women Unlikely Japan = Men

Doh! What does he play then? I always thought he played a strat in concert. Oh, he plays a jazzmaster. Now that makes sense. I was going to buy one about 10 years ago, had the cash in hand and everything. I regret not getting that guitar.

Nels plays a strat. Usually I don't like strats. Just like I am with antique furniture and midgets. You know that, I can't so much as drink a damn glass of water around a midget, a strat or a piece of antique furniture. Anyhow, his lead on Impossible Germany is amazing. This lead is the first lead ever IMHO that even suggests a strat is actually made out of wood. The tone is luscious.

Songs played live recently that didn't make the cut

I'm definitely an album person. Probably because I was born in 1975. -
The Dead and Pink Floyd influences are strong here. It could have been a huge jam, they obviously were trying to stay away from jams on this album. A missed opportunity in my book too. Also, for SBS, I wonder how all of this is going to come off live. I can't imagine standing at the 9:30 Club and listening to this set of songs. To me, this solitude, mellow album would be much cooler if I saw Wilco playing them at a lounge where you could sit around on velvet couches and listen and chat amongst your friends.

Ok. So I'm an idiot. No news there. But I drank some beers last night and listened to this album. I love it now. My first impression of this album was sloppy. In a sense it is, mostly Tweedy's vocal phrasing. But it is all coming together for me. Also this album is beginning to feel like an album. It also seems less sloppy. I love the references to the Beatles, Pink Floyd and Tweedy's own 70's sound he has cultivated over the years. This was the first Wilco album that I wasn't immediately blown away by. But it is definitely getting better with each listen. I can even get into "Ha

I agree with your disagreeing above.

Happy Birfday Jeremy!

I like how the end of the song repeats, "You Shall Have No Other God But Me." 3 times -- Which is in essence what the first 3 commandments are saying. Cool way to finish out the song. BAIT USA > SBS

Maybe, but that's basically what the recording industry does during mastering. It's worked wonders for most amateurs that I know.

I'm assuming the only difference would be that the sound is only going to be slightly better than one from the webcast on Saturday.?

Very, Very funny! danke schoen

Tell me 1 album you think is a must have. Can be old can be new.

George Martin's "All You Need Is Ears" is a great book too. Not as much tech info as this one seems to have, but still a great insight.

A cheap (free) way to make your songs sound better: get audacity, compress it and then boost the sound. The compress will get rid of a lot of the hiss sound that you would normally get with home digital recorders. Sourceforge Page for Audacity You'll also need LAME if you want to export your songs from Audacity to MP3 format; LAME encoder

Same here. I'm going to listen to it today some more, but it seems really disjointed. I'm a big "album" person, so I'm wondering if it has enough of a flow to be good in my mind.

I'm finding that the best guitar on SBS is again Tweedy. I'm not trying to flame here but I think Nels' contribution to SBS is marginal and sounds like they were just overdubs for the sake of doing overdubs. Just my opinion.

sloppy half-baked disappointing

Does someone have a YSI for me?

Same here. Yesterday was my birthday so I was not online to even hear about it.
