Just for you, calvino, a brief recap of the Big Star tribute show. Overall, let's just call it a "noble but unsuccessful experiment". It was a bit disorganized (lots of dead air between songs and calling for musicians who should be on stage), and didn't have much resonance for me. Mike Mills pretty much won the night with his excellent vocals (always thought he was underrated as a singer). He looks so different now, I literally walked right past him in the street and didn't recognize him, even though REM was my Wilco in the late 80s and early 90s. Your buddy Ken Vandermark didn't have

Welcome, abbieroad and surprisetruck! Glad you both enjoyed your first SSF as much as I did. Agree that the chair/blanket situation in Joe's Field seems to indicate that a new system is needed. On Saturday night I was standing behind a family with little bored kids sleeping in lawn chairs, right up front, which was really awkward for those around them and frankly not very fun for the kids. At Telluride Bluegrass Festival a few years ago I recall some kind of tarp system that meant you can put down your tarp, but if you're not there, others are free to take your spot. That seemed to work ok

That is a gorgeous bit of guitar work in that song, especially at the end there. Looking forward to hearing Richard Thompson perform it at Americanarama. This was my first Solid Sound but hopefully not my last! Thoughts and reflections: Mass MoCA: My brother-in-law came along for Friday's festivities and I was on my own Saturday and Sunday. What a treasure of a facility they have there at Mass MoCA! I'm originally from Pittsburgh and have seen a lot of these old mills that are converted for modern usage, but none nearly as beautiful or functional as that one. The contrast of the industrial with artistic creativity is perfection. I can't think of anyone (art lover or not) who would not find the Phoenixes impressive. And of course my inn

Just lovely. I saw them the night before (12/15/2011) at the Vic and it was magical also. When I saw Low at Metro a couple of months ago, there was way too much crowd chatter in the balcony and ended up moving down to the floor with the listeners. Something about that venue maybe brings out the chattiness?

Patty Griffin. Just got home and she was fabulous. What a voice the woman has. And some great songwriting chops.
