  1. Calexico and the Dodos at Lincoln Hall.
  2. Heard a few minutes of this interview on my way to the Gary Louris show, and really liked what I heard. I will seek out Thomas' music.
  3. Saw Gary Louris this evening (and he was seriously excellent). A few observations to share: 1. Gave a shout-out to Jeff Tweedy when playing their co-written Golden Smog song "Listen Joe" (also played Golden Smog's "Jennifer Save Me") 2. Just an observation: First song he did was from his solo album. Song called "True Blue" containing this lyric: Rusty wire, bent to make a fence, rows and rows of houses, cold and still, until tomorrow Does the "rows and rows of houses" part sound familiar to anyone:) 3. I'm officially convinced that Gary Louris is the center of the Jayhawks sound I
  4. It was about the best day ever. Perfect weather, nice crowd, a diverse group of interesting bands all day long, and capped off by a really great setlist from Wilco. Jeff commented that with all the shows they've played in Chicago in the last year, it's getting hard to mix it up for us, so we are getting some deep cuts
  5. Hideout Block Party! Seeing the War on Drugs, Glen Hansard and Iron & Wine. Tomorrow, Wilco!
  6. Got my ticket for the 9/23 Gary Louris show in Evanston as soon as they went on sale! I have long been a fan of the Jayhawks (especially Hollywood Town Hall) and saw them in the spring at the Vic. Thought they sounded great, but have nothing to compare it to, since it was the first time I've seen them.
  7. Sallie Ford and the Sound Outside.
  8. I'll never make it through the whole thing, but so glad to catch a few minutes of this! Thank you for sharing.
  9. Marshall Crenshaw with members of the Bottle Rockets.
  10. A friend's mom worked at a dentist's office. This mom knew a mutual friend of ours who was a big Wilco fan. Glenn apparently went to this dentist, and one day the mom said to him that X was a big fan and would he sign her YHF CD? He asked if it was OK for him to take it and have the whole band sign it. The mom actually called X and asked her and she said (of course) "do it!" Months pass and she doesn't hear anything back, figuring it got lost in the shuffle. And then an envelope arrived with her CD and the signatures of everyone in the band. So impressed with how good they are to the f
  11. #7 makes me want to throw myself off a tall building.
  12. Stumbled on this recent interview with John Stirratt. It has a couple of enlightening observations and nuggets of Wilco arcana for those who might be interested. http://www.columbusa...-interview.html He talks a bit about the current reworking of Spiders and Laminated Cat, and is charmingly distracted mid-interview by a stranger in distress.
  13. That is fantastic! What a great way to spend the summer and see something of the country. The blog was really interesting too!
  14. Right, jackins. Box Full of Letters was not played, but the Late Greats was. No idea about the sequence though!
  15. New record for me this year... Jeff Tweedy solo @ the Vic in Chicago - March 31 Wilco @ Geneva - July 8 Wilco @ Essex Junction, VT - July 29 Wilco @ Hideout Block Party in Chicago - September 14-15 and ???
  16. The small crowd and perfect weather made for a fantastic show! We stood right in front of Pat, second row of standers-up behind the barricade, and the band seemed really happy and energized throughout the show. I enjoyed it when someone right behind me yelled out that they're naming their baby "Tweedy" and Jeff implored them on behalf of the child not to do it (ha!) The sound was really good and the playlist was rocking. They played both of my requests, and just about every big flat-out rocker in their catalog, which was ideal for a gorgeous summer night. Met lots of other nice Wilc
  17. Really enjoyed the show last night. Wow, what a gorgeous night for an outdoor summer concert! The setlist was very heavy on "rocking out" tunes. I know it's hard to make quieter ballads work in a big outdoor venue like that, but I did miss some of my favorites. Loved the inclusion of the Late Greats at the end there, and loved hearing Jesus etc. with Bird. I'm always impressed with the musicianship of these guys. They are pros. The venue was actually gorgeous and the sound was phenomenal for a place that just doesn't host concerts (or frankly, any event) of this magnitude. The parking/
  18. I didn't love Reservations until I heard a solo acoustic version of it and really listened to the lyric. It's quietly devastating to me. "How can I convince you it's me I don't like" and "I've always told lies for love." Essentially, saying "I don't like myself and I'm a liar." The chorus is in contrast saying, "I trust almost nobody, but I trust you." So raw and honest. How vulnerable you would have to become, to say that out loud. How many of us could be so honest about our worst faults? That's what I hear in it.
  19. Other banter highlights... An audience member asked, "what's the story with the jean jackets?" and Jeff said something like, "In the 1800s, people were looking for a fabric that was both durable and lightweight." Another question asked if he would be on Dancing With the Stars and he said, "Why, do you have a connection?" and then after thinking about it for a while he said his answer would have to be no, but he'd like to be on American Idol not to judge the contestants but to judge the stupid judges "especially Randy."
  20. Fantastic show last night and loved all the banter. Standouts were that gorgeous acoustic version of "At Least That's What You Said" and the unplugged "Acuff-Rose" (my personal favorite of the moment.) The setlist was extremely varied, and I loved hearing some stuff I didn't know, along with interesting versions of old favorites. Jeff's comments on the crowd requests were priceless -- "he's not afraid to pick a hit" (Heavy Metal Drummer), "one of the most reviled songs in the Wilco catalog" (Capitol City), "she apparently hasn't bought a record since the mid-90s". How fun it was to see Jef
