  1. I figure that if something truly apocalyptic happens in my lifetime (monster asteroid, cosmic bacon, etc.) and we all check out together, then it's only fair and I can't be too upset about it.
  2. Click on the "Vote for your favourite modern artist: view our shortlist of 200" link below the pic of Picasso towards the top of the page to get to the full list.
  3. I Voted! Joseph Cornell Richard Diebenkorn Marcel Duchamp Ian Hamilton-Finlay Philip Guston Damien Hirst Anselm Kiefer Robert Rauschenberg Robert Ryman Kurt Schwitters Chaim Soutine Soutine, Guston, and Diebenkorn because when I look at their work, it makes me want to paint. Duchamp because you just can't ignore him (IMHO the most important artist of the past century, altho not my favorite). Schwitters, Cornell, and Rauschenberg because their work has had the most influence on my work (collage/sense of play). I like the concrete poetry of Ian Hamilton-Finlay, and the slicked-up death-obses
  4. We saw the Savannah show last Friday - really enjoyed it although it was a weird crowd. The show was part of the Savannah Music Festival so there were a bunch of folks there who were unfamiliar w/ her stuff (some of whom walked out about halfway through). Lots of awkward pauses after songs when much of the audience were unsure if a song was over and if it was okay to applaud. Most of the setlist was from Middle Cyclone with a few older numbers mixed in. Loved the stage banter between Niko & Kelly (who knew Niko has such a potty mouth. hehee), and Kelly rockin' the music box solo.
  5. Would this be the new world order that PANTHER keeps going on about?
  6. 1. Murmur 2. Reckoning 3. Chronic Town 4. Life's Rich Pageant 5. Fables 6. Automatic for the People 7. Document 8. New Adventures in HiFi 9. Green 10. Out of Time Reckoning used to be my #1 but then I got the remastered Murmur for Christmas and really heard the thing for the first time in ages. My goodness - what a strange and wonderful album.
  7. I can't believe McCain didn't push for this earlier - if he'd announced this the first week of November 2008 it would've both fixed the economy overnight and put him in the White House by a landslide.
  8. it's got plants and birds and rocks and things
  9. Very cool! Museums are starting to use online resources such as flickr as a means to showcase their collections and/or create interactive environments to connect with their audience - I wish I had some appropriate photos to add; two places I've been that come to mind are San Lorenzo's Chapel of the Princes in Florence (a space that just reeks of death and power), and the queue at Space Mountain. We have the Architecture of Authority exhibition catalog in the library where I work but someone has it checked out already - I'll have to put a reserve on it & snag it when it comes back in.
  10. Crabtree & Evelyn or Junk in the Trunk
  11. "Them Apples" then I can go around asking people "so, how you like Them Apples?"
  12. I think most of the guest performers in the Last Waltz got paid in blow.
  13. "Sweet Home Alabama" - I hear this on the radio driving to & from work at least 3 times a week (actually I only hear the intro/"turn it up" part because that's how long it takes for me to hit the scan button)
  14. Yeah, I wasted my time reading this last year - his writing is as rote and colorless as his playing. It was a library book so at least I didn't waste any money. Is it just me or does the cursive signature on the book jacket also read as a derogatory slang for a part of the female anatomy that rhymes with "hunt"?
  15. Don't know if this has been posted already but YLT (calling themselves the Condo F*cks) is releasing a disc of covers next week: F*ckbook.
  16. The "natural sounds" of where I used to live in West Philadelphia.
  17. I'd also recommend The Pearl by Harold Budd/Brian Eno - minimal and gorgeous (it's got cricket sounds, too) also: Lambchop Is a Woman
  18. yup - although perhaps more a case of diminishing returns. ten minutes into the 3rd encore guitar solo even the drummer was glancing towards the fire exit.
  19. E. Costello/Nick Lowe acoustic tour Pixies (Doolittle-era) Big Audio Dynamite (1st US tour) REM Wilco
  20. Squeeze - Merriweather Post Pavilion 1987 - this show was booked when they had an open date while on tour opening for David Bowie. They played a 40 minute set w/ no encore (I guess the same length/setlist as opening for Bowie); The opening band (Winter Hours) played longer. Husker Du - Warehouse tour 1987 - they played all the stuff from the Warehouse album front to back in a too-large undersold concert hall. Meat Puppets - sometime in the early 90's - a good show that just went on too long. one encore? sure! two encores? um, okay.. three encores?? don't you guys have a van to catch?
  21. Let it Bleed (what mfwahl said)
