Anne Hathaway did fine, although her cheerleading bit(s) seemed like an attempt to mask her nerves. And her constant "hip young Oscars" comments seemed like a rib at the whole idea. It felt like they sat around a table and said her name because she did a duet with Hugh Jackman (who I still think was the best host of the last 5 or so years). James Franco - Seriously, I haven't seen heavy eye lids like that since watching Garfield. A: 127 Hours Q: The amount of time that Franco was stoned all week. (taken from my FB page) Maybe bright lights make him squint, but I highly doubt it. He seeme

Really?! Would you like me to go out and interview lesbian couples and see how many of them would leave their respective partner to fool around with a man? That's all that I'm trying to get at. How realistic is that? I guess I'm going with the true sense of the word lesbian and thinking that that applies to women who sexually desire and wants relationships with other women. I also realize that can also apply to a lesbian woman and bisexual woman as presented in the film. I just really felt like the whole Ruffalo thing was an unnecessary copout of a plot driver. The man presented as the main co

Oops! David Fincher all the way. I'm pretty sure that James Cameron's clone won't win (Tom Hooper). Seriously, it's scary how much they look alike. Still surprised at Nolan's exclusion. I fell in love with Inception. It was my favorite and best filmgoing experience of 2010. In 2009, it was Inglourious Basterds. I love how Nolan made an airtight film that can be picked apart and you'll still get something different out of it. There really is no answer. It's a filmed Penrose staircase. Edit: (a bit off topic) I was considering writing an essay comparing Darren Aronofsky & Christopher No

That is unheard of at VC, ain't it? OK. I will respond to Bleedorange's original question, but can I politely modify it to who I "want" to win and who I think "will" win? "Want" to win/"Will" win Best Picture: Inception/The Social Network Actor: Colin Firth (he needs to win this, so that Social Network can win the big one. Really wish Ryan Gosling was here. Totally deserved it)/same Actress: Natalie Portman/same Supporting Actor: Bale/same Supporting Actress: Melissa Leo/same (although recent talk about her own Oscar campaign may have turned some people off) Original Screenplay: Incept

Oh, I agree with you 100%, but I guess I feel the need to create some sort of "awareness". Plus, I'm stuck here in the snow. I also addressed the Criterion Collection on a friend's Facebook page link (he made mention of Criterion=Quality and all titles were 50% off). I pointed out that certain filmmakers have been overlooked or rather simply won't sit down with the good folks over there and sit through the telecine process. What this creates is an unfair imbalance of "over accommodating" filmmakers having their films get the Criterion Collection treatment (read: Wes Anderson who currently is

I agree that Toy Story 3 is a great film, if not the best Pixar film of all time. But I can't get down with double dipping. It seems a bit unfair for a film to be nominated for Best Animated Film and Best Picture. I would feel the same way if a Foreign Language film that was a shoe in to win that category, snuck into the Best Picture pool. It doesn't sit well with me at all. And the only way for people to wake up and realize this is for something like Toy Story 3 to win Best Picture and Best Animated Film. Let's see what people would say then. And you know that they would never disqualify some

I'll watch. But I could really care less who wins because it's all a political show. I don't agree with 5 of the Best Picture nominees and think it's stupid that someone should win because last year they lost. And someone should win because she lost twice to Hilary Swank seems foolish. I'm also pissed that Weinstein Co. is recutting The King's Speech to receive a PG-13 rating to bring in more revenue pretty much. That one scene that "earned" them an R should not be cut out at all. And don't even get me started on the nonsense of originally giving Blue Valentine an NC-17. Any time we see a ma

Yankees vs. Phillies right now on MLB Network. Live from FL. I guess that they are going to be broadcasting a bunch of games over the next month.

Pappa Stax sounds like an Italian Motown record label.

LOL!!! This is extremely funny! It literally had me in stitches. A must watch if you saw any of the nominated films. Quite the ending too. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4RDHk2-p_EA

Celtics have traded C Kendrick Perkins to Oklahoma City Thunder for F Jeff Green and C Nenad Krstic. First of all isn't he injured? And didn't Boston blame Game 7 on his absence? Makes no sense right now. Oh well. Edit: It is now being reported that Nate Robinson is also going to Oklahoma City too. Very odd. Edit part two: I guess that the Celtics think that the Thunder will have a better chance of taking on and taking out the Lakers before the Celtics can possibly get to them.

Hmm. I've been rather lucky I guess. Nearly every iTunes purchase that I made came with album art and even some e-booklets that you can print. I don't think that happens with older titles, but even uploading older cds you can easily get artwork for it when you do a search. Edit: Of course, this doesn't work with certain imports and bootlegs.

Can someone give a blurb on 5x5 rules? I looked it up online and I've heard mixed reviews about it. The league that I was in last year may not take me on as a member again because my best friend got me in and now he works at a different place. That was rotisserie style. I did head to head here for football last fall. Edit: OK. I looked up another link and it sounds pretty much like the roto league that I was in last year with the exclusion of a Holds category.

Bands you wish that you had seen, but missed the chance

Not to make it a Radiohead thread, but I agree with my friend (literally). I don't hear Phil Selway. What I hear are drum loops taken out of the late 90s and used in the first 4 songs that make them indistinguishable from each other. It does sound a lot like a Thom Yorke solo record. The fake sounding drum loops are what drives me batty about it. I'll have to post this in the actual Radiohead thread now. -

Rage Against The Machine. 1999 or 2000. I was hand given GA tickets for their show last minute. The problem was that I had a final that night in my evening class. Then they broke up a year or so after. Edit: Actually, I almost saw them a year later with the Beastie Boys, but Adam Yauch or was it Mike D broke their shoulder and that whole tour got cancelled. It was a weird tour because they were supposed to play at Gillette Stadium. Kind of big for both of them, I thought. -
Best summer drink (even famed New England food critic The Phantom Gourmet put it at the top of their list). A beautiful mix of the best iced tea out there on the market and lemonade. Not too much sugar either. Only about 13mg per serving. We hit 60 today in New Hampshire and it looks like spring outside. There's no gray sky today, only blue sky and that yellow thing that I haven't seen in quite awhile. It's actually a very Phil Collins day. And by that I mean No Jacket Required.

That's not what I meant. I actually meant physical store space that was previously occupied by these chain stores. Savers took over the old Circuit City building. Used Books took over the old Tweeter building. etc...

It really doesn't say anything other than "drop off your used books here" or something like that. It does look like those giant drop boxes for clothing that are also a little bit unspecific. Although, at least with those it does say something about clothes being donated to a good will type place. I would be similarly upset if those clothes found their way at the brand new used store Savers. I guess I'm upset with the intent unknown and an unclear specification about an end user. When I drop off my grown-out-of clothes at Savers, I know exactly what will be done with them. Well, I obviously wo

I don't like these giant "Used Book" stores that have popped up around the north east over the last couple of years. They are simply called "Used Books". They are extremely sketchy with their practices. All locations have a giant drop box for "book donations" that look like it will be used for good will and school children etc. It turns out that that is where this store gets its inventory from. The local news did a piece on this and the guy running it said that he didn't think that he was doing anything wrong. I still haven't seen a clarification sticker on these drop boxes that says that your

This. What I had originally said was a joke on the changing times. In reality these two big behemoth book stores overcharge on cds and dvds. It makes you wonder why they even bother to sell them. I know that Barnes & Noble offers 10% off for people that have a reward points card. 10% really doesn't do much, as you will see below. I've seen a new dvd title anywhere from $18.99 to $29.99 and then walk over to Best Buy and find the same title for $14.99. Of course, this usually lasts for the first 5 days then it goes up to $18.99 or so. Edit: For my film buddies on here - I know the only

Yeah, that was for the most part a joke. Although, it is quite upsetting that I can think of one team that has the money to sign him, but nowhere to put him. Or a few teams come to mind with the same problem. $300 million for 10 years?!?! Good luck on that Albert. I'm assuming an AL team will take the risk of him not getting hurt and then swapping him over to DH towards the end of his career. 10 years down the road he will be 41. I don't know. This whole thing could put their whole clubhouse into somewhat "bad blood" mode.

I wonder how many people read that on their iPad or Nook? I'll have to go to my local Border's this weekend. It'll be my first time in one for like almost a decade.

Edit: Oops! Now you decide to add your own picture. I'm gearing up to read A.C. Weisbecker's cult classic Cosmic Banditos which was supposed to be turned into a film about 7 years ago with John Cusack and Benicio Del Toro. And I want to read Chuck Palahniuk's Snuff which is about....well look it up yourself.
