  1. OK. There is still some sufficient evidence not given to have me give my best response at this time. Such as, what did you get for Christmas from them the year before? I'm assuming at that point it was a 6 month relationship. So you went from "Something" to a box of chocolate covered cherries to a bag of jelly beans. Hmm. Maybe they were just fucking with you to see if you'd stick around. Kind of like, "why should we invest money in this guy? He might be gone before it's Easter." That's some pertinent information that you left out: how often did your ex have a boyfriend? On the other han
  2. Update: For fans of Mitchell Hurwitz & the few folks that want to see Running Wilde's last remaining episodes can breathe a sigh of relief that they don't have to buy the DVD. FOX is going to play them on Sunday nights beginning tonight at 9p.m. However, it does appear that they will be played out of order. OK. Scratch that. LOL. Tonight's episode is new and the one next week is a repeat. I guess episode titles have not been that memorable. Perfect Couples - NBC ran a random episode of this this past Monday night. I watched it earlier today and I thought it was ok. All of the men were p
  3. Sam Raimi & Peter Buck I think I finally realized this around the time of Spider-Man 2.
  4. Is it because it sounds like the old 80s records? I understand where you are coming from for being excited. I am too, but I questioned my reasoning and it makes me wonder if any band can ever escape their "sound" and if it doesn't have that "sound" it is considered a disappointment in the wrong direction. None of the R.E.M. albums dating back to Up had that distinctive "sound" and all of a sudden this one does and everyone is proclaiming it to be a "classic". What would U2 have to do to make a "classic" record? Take the best ingredients of Joshua Tree and Achtung Baby and hope for the best?
  5. My .02 cents which probably won't change anyone's minds and is probably not even worth posting. For me, U2's records dating back to 97's Pop are a lot more memorable & familiar to me than R.E.M.'s dating back to 98's Up. Seriously, I still don't know anything about the songs at the end of Reveal and looking at the tracklisting for Around The Sun I am left scratching my head for quite a few tunes. That could be a combination problem of me not playing them enough, although I've tried, or R.E.M. not playing them in concert. Now what R.E.M. lacked in albums, I feel they more than made up
  6. Hey, does this mean that Mary Louise Parker sitting in your lap for Christmas is more or less likely?
  7. 1982 Tron Holiday Special And a little something for those of you that are upset with Disney's constant need to make certain things rare at the worst possible time... A.K.A. I Just Saved You $100 You Can Thank Me Later
  8. Another multimedia idea popped into my head that I had awhile back to kind of save record stores: a kiosk for your iPod to download music directly. Think about it: you bring your iPod to Mass MoCa and you find a kiosk and you put in a credit card and pick whichever band's music you want that appears at Solid Sound. Maybe you can even have options on the main menu to see which music people bought or specific playlists chosen by the artists. Or maybe you can buy performances after they happen. It would also be nice if fellow VCers could upload their own music to be heard/sampled and purchased
  9. Black Swan Simply amazing. My head is still spinning from last night. I can't really get into details without spoiling where the story takes us, but there's plenty to chew on to discuss with friends afterwards. Aronofsky employs a muted color palette except in a few key scenes and does a lot of camera tricks. Natalie Portman gives one of the best female performances in years. To discuss what she's done would be to give away the gist of the story.
  10. OK. I highly doubt it, but wouldn't it be something for either Jon Stewart or Stephen Colbert to be there for just a little bit of something? They don't shoot shows on these 3 days of the week, so there is a very slight possibility. I'd like to see John Hodgman and John Oliver do something. I know that they were in attendance at the 1st one. Judah Friedlander. Craig Ferguson - he should be in Boston that week for the 4th of July festivities. I don't know. It's tough to think of comedians that aren't well known that would fit the bill and not draw a huge crowd. Perhaps Aziz Ansari? Flight Of
  11. I'm hoping that they somehow make a new cut of the film. I'm sick of seeing cut footage taken out of context. Remember when they used to make DVDs branching? You could watch the theatrical cut or choose to watch an extended cut on your dvd. Anyways, I think it should be released as a new cut for the sole purpose of educating folks in the essence of pacing and editing. The Kubrick Estate may put up a fight for this reason, since they probably don't want to tarnish Kubrick's masterpiece. Somewhat off topic: I remember looking on youtube for cut clips from Superman IV that were beyond horre
  12. Director and visual effects pioneer Doug Trumbull, in Toronto to screen Stanley Kubrick’s “2001: A Space Odyssey” (on which Trumbell labored), had a crazy piece of news for those in attendance. [Trumbull] also informed us that the 17 minutes that Kubrick cut from 2001 shortly after the film's release have been found by Warners in their vault in a salt mine in Kansas. These cut scenes are perfectly preserved in CMY component negatives. Trumbull has no idea of what Warners plans to do with them. Releasing them on a new “2001” Blu-ray might be a good place to start? From Wikipedia: Kubrick
  13. Red Sox send Eric Patterson to complete the Adrian Gonzalez deal. AND They just signed Bobby Jenks for 2 years for $11/12 million. Could Papelbon be on the move? Also, Josh Willingham was traded to the A's for Henry Rodriguez and Corey Brown. The A's now have an outfield of Willingham, Coco Crisp and David DeJesus. That looks pretty decent.
  14. January 18th, 2011 for Official Announcement and Ticket Info - Captain Obvous for those of you who were fast enough to link it up... I will make this one. Edit: I think a 2 hour window designated for a "mass" paintball experience is called for this year. Laser tag works too.... Bonus points for getting Nels.
  15. I posted this in the old Random Topic Thread: the recent rash of Presidential Chia Pets. Not necessarily a Christmas commercial, but they did start appearing last month. I've never met anyone who has ever owned or given a Chia Pet.
  16. The Fighter I was born and grew up in Lowell. I went to elementary school there. I was in the 8th grade when this story begins in the film: 1993. I remember my dad telling me about Micky Ward and how he came from Lowell and was a "could have been amazing" boxer. Then I remember soon after that Lowell being put on the map by HBO with their High On Crack Street documentary special where they interviewed Ward's half brother and also ex-boxing phenom Dicky Ecklund. Needless to say it was an embarrassment to say you were from Lowell. It was a run down old mill city that was being filled with peop
  17. Nope. I said that she wasn't successful at it. I never pointed the blame at her label. Although, I'm not 100% sure which label put out her "country" record as opposed to the label that put out her big records in the late 90s. I suppose I can check out her discography, although I wouldn't be surprised if it was a different label. Let me put on my little detective hat. What's the worst that could happen? Look at pictures of Jewel . OK. Her 2 country albums are on a new label named Valory Records. Atlantic Records released her earlier work.
  18. I'll answer your question by using 3 different eras. It certainly works in reverse too. I think you are putting too much emphasis on "flavorful artisan scone", as if once that artist sells X amount of records they go and play coffee shops or something. Late 80s/Early 90s Mariah Carey: She burst onto the scene in Adult Contemporary. You could argue that when she began at the time that was the pop music. It was music that somehow was geared to adults who were supposedly still buying records in that era. She definitely fell in with her contemporaries immediately and then broke that image and b
  19. Hmm. I volunteer a lot for local public access channel programming and last night there was a local young woman who is a singer/songwriter. She dressed a lot like Katy Perry and talked to some folks about the current pop music business. She claimed to love Johnny Cash and Patsy Cline. She somehow got lucky enough to have herself some recording time in Boston with a producer and songwriter. She even did the hot photo shoot that all young women seem to need to do in pop music to get "noticed". Anyways, long story short when she did sing it sounded like a carbon copy of any vanilla Katy Perry son
  20. I can't fathom how many people I know and have known that LOVE this band. 10 Grammy Awards?! Their album tracks have to be amazing or something because all of the radio hits are pretty bad. Maybe their live shows are amazing. Perhaps they are the poster child for "Music For People Who Don't Like Music".
  21. U2 debuted All I Want Is You and Love Rescue Me (last performed on January 10, 1990 in Australia) in Sydney, Australia earlier today on their 360 Tour. Wow.
