  1. Via MTV News: Irvin Kershner, best known for directing the "Star Wars" sequel "The Empire Strikes Back," has died at the age of 87. The filmmaker passed away at his Los Angeles home after a long bout with an unspecified illness, his goddaughter Adriana Santini told French news service AFP on Monday. Born in 1923 in Philadelphia, Kershner studied music, painting and photography before turning his focus to filmmaking in the early 1950s. He got his start directing documentaries in Iran, Greece and Turkey for the United States Information Service, then returned to the States to develop the T
  2. R.I.P. Leslie Nielsen. For those of you that don't know, I named my Fantasy team Frank Drebin's Squad (VC btw) with his amazing picture. I was about to go 0-4 in November being down by almost 40 pts this afternoon. I was amazed to see that I obtained 42 pts via 3 players tonight, especially with Comcast being out for 3 hours (primetime) and my best friend calling me to tell me about this man's unfortunate death. This win is for you. Thanks. Wilma, I promise you; whatever scum did this, not one man on this force will rest one minute until he's behind bars. Now, let's grab a bite to eat.
  3. My Christmas gift to you all.... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r3UGHFitODk&feature=youtube_gdata_player
  4. Jeff Tweedy has no prior recollection of the Wilco albums. They all exist in his head in varying degrees of different versions. They are memories of a time gone by so slowly. Or Jeff Tweedy's consciousness has been switched with that of Ryan Adams. There's always that possibility.
  5. If some of you had the chance, I bet you'd get DiCaprio to incept an idea for an amazing album into Jeff's conscious.
  6. Something tells me that is is very good theater. There's no logical way that Jeter demands that much money when he knows the executives are going after Cliff Lee who would mean a whole lot more to them than Jeter. I thought a month ago that Jeter would take a hometown discount, since this could possibly be his last 3 years. Scenario A: Yankees sign Cliff Lee for a shitload of money and then they mention that Jeter took a pay cut and comes out looking like roses with such quotes as "I took a look in the mirror and realized that this is what is best for the ball club". Scenario B : Yankees mis
  7. My thoughts on the whole Sky Blue Sky vs. Wilco (The Album)...(excuse me as I put on my hazmat suit) I can truly listen to W(TA) all the way through and not be bothered at all by the sequencing. I have some problems with the pacing of Sky Blue Sky. I feel that it is an excellent record, but a lot of the songs run on the same speed. Either Way, Sky Blue Sky, Please Be Patient With Me, What Light and On & On & On are all beautiful and gorgeous songs, but for me they really work well when I'm controlling my own iMix or listening to a boot. (don't get me started on Leave Me Like You Foun
  8. I love the version performed almost 4 years to the day: November 24th in Chicago. I was at that show and it was an amazing heartfelt performance preceded by a killer album version of Sunken Treasure. Also, the version at the Tanglewood show in 2008 was excellent as well.
  9. U2 is set to go back out on the road Thursday beginning in Auckland, New Zealand (ending on December 19th in Australia) with Jay-Z as opener. At soundcheck today U2 were heard to be extensively rehearsing One Tree Hill (wish they'd play it other then out in NZ). And U2 is reportedly rehearsing October's Scarlet (played only 1 time according to U2gigs) with a Jay-Z guest rap in there. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p3qF1E7UkM4 Perhaps a new concert intro. It would flow nicely into Beautiful Day, although I doubt Jay-Z coming back out after a 40 minute break just for a little guest spot. Jay
  10. Wilco is reportedly doing their 2011 Winter Resindency in the warm climate of Colombia where they will have their fans pick coffee beans as they perform. Edited for spelling.
  11. Happy Birthday Maudie! Thanks for the Boston Pavillion tickets 3 years ago where I met you for like a minute. And I do have to say that I am upset that that photo was used. I was about to watch Game 5 on my DVR tonight. I'm 3 weeks behind on everything.
  12. Wilco Condoms. Wishful Thinking. Shrunken Treasure. Edit: Actually, if it comes to that I think it's safe to say that Wilco has finally "jumped the shark".
  13. Why do I feel that there's going to be at least 3 hate filled pages debating this in a heated manner?
  14. Oh well. He can always go back to his day job....
  15. I like Robocop too, but how can that get the Criterion treatment and Blade Runner hasn't? Certain directors that are pretty famous do not have one single film in the Criterion Collection. I'm assuming there's a lot of reasons why that is. @ bigshoulders RE: Chasing Amy - I don't agree with you on that one. I think that is probably my favorite Kevin Smith film and was quite a good story to tell and obviously very connectable for people of that generation.
  16. What GtrPlayer said and the fact that Wes Anderson has Satanic Cult footage of the "good" people over at Criterion, since he's batting a thousand. Seriously, all of his films are featured as part of the collection. Fantastic Mr. Fox is due out sometime next year. And don't forget that some films somehow slipped under the radar and weren't double checked: The Rock, Robocop, and Armageddon. Also, there's the Eclipse Collection that has been going on since 2007 and is usually released about once a month. This collection focuses on a particular filmmaker usually and features a boxset of th
  17. What's next?! He's going to tell folks it is ok to buy kids Atari 2600 for Christmas.
  18. Yes! As soon as I finished watching Bronson, I went to IMDB immediately and looked up his other work. I seem to believe that it came to Boston at some point during the spring or summer. The title sounds very familiar. I am definitely going to seek it out. I enjoyed the trailer.
  19. Hmm. Kind of like how all of the Wilco covers all kind of sound like the originals. {directed mostly at the writer of the Cracked magazine article and other skeptics of comic book film adaptations} First of all, Green Lantern (1959) predates Iron Man (1963) by 4 years. It just so happens that D.C. Comics has sat idly on the Hollywood sidelines and did not have the balls to release their secondary superhero films, such as The Flash, Green Arrow and Hawkman. It's also a shame because D.C. Comics' Justice League predates Marvel's Avengers (due in 2012). D.C. had the idea to link all of their
  20. I've been meaning to post this all week, but I kept forgetting about it. That's odd because this film and the amazing fucking performance by Tom Hardy as Charlie Bronson is unforgettable. Watching this reaffirms that talent is always out there and ready to take on something challenging and probably not too well seen at the time. Nicolas Winding Refn does a phenomenal job directing this. The whole film has a Kubrick quality to it, since it employs a fusion of violence, classical music and opera. I really can't say much more about Tom Hardy. You really can't see the Tom Hardy (The Forge
  21. I agree on wanting to cut back and I foresee myself doing that a lot when I rejoin Netflix next week. That being said, I truly feel that we are all collectors of films and like to have a physical object to show for it. Book lovers probably like to own books too and show them off. I don't think every time they want to pull out (insert title here) they have to go to the library to rent it. Now a blind book read/purchase is a lot easier to pull off than a blind film watch/purchase at a library.
  22. (cue Darth Vader's NOOOOOOOO!!!!!) Fox is putting Fringe on Fridays beginning on January 28th 2011. Or "The Kiss Of Death". Friday night is the old folk's home of network television. Fringe is quite possibly my favorite show on network television right now. I knew that it would somehow someway fill that void that Lost left this spring. It has been consistently satisfying from week to week and it actually makes me want to tune in every week unlike some of this fall's new shows (Hawaii Five-O and The Event). It's kind of strange that Fox killed one of their best shows by giving Glee t
  23. This one looks very funny and is an homage to those 80s fantasy films such as Krull and Beastmaster. Natalie Portman in a thong next to a pond that she's about to take a dip into is an immediate purchase for me. Also, Zooey Deschanel is here too. And David Gordon Green is directing this one. His career has been all over the place and I love it. Good for him. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nx_zo5CCURs NSFW James Franco and Danny McBride look great as the leads.
  24. Entertainment Tonight played a 20 second clip of the goofiest portions of this Green Lantern preview and freaked fanboys everywhere. I like that they are keeping the sci-fi elements of the comics. It makes it feel different from the other recent comic book films. Although, I pictured Ryan Reynolds more as The Flash than Green Lantern. I wanted Nathan Fillion, but I think movie execs figured he's a bit too old. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8NWGl_A3b60 Mark Strong as Sinestro looks great and so does Peter Sarsgaard as Dr. Hector Hammond. Blake Lively looks pretty good too.
  25. Another fantastic looking film is Jon Favreau's Cowboys & Aliens with Daniel Craig, Sam Rockwell, Olivia Wilde and Harrison Ford. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZBKU9WU_wLo I just love that concept of aliens coming during the wild west.
